if you could go back to any year and change the winner of a major oscar category (picture, actor, actress, sup. actor, sup. actress, director)

i have 3 that have always bugged me more than others

'88 actor winner: Dustin Hoffman for RainMan

my choice: Tom Hanks for Big

dustin is great as usual, but he has a specific affectation to lean on throught the production - i say the powerhouse performance in rain man was tom cruise's (a crime he wasnt even nominated for sup. actor - in any other year he should have won - cant argue with kevin kline for a fish called wanda - meanwhile, hanks WAS a 13 year old boy in big - a completely unmannered, free bit of film communication by a burgeoning legend

'90 director winner: Kevin Costner for Dances With Wolves

my choice: Martin Scorcese for Goodfellas

i could also argue that goodfellas shoulda won best pictuh, but my bigger beef is with the director prize - dances is a great movie, but goodfellas is a logistically nightmarish shoot morphed into a smooth, brisk, captivating yarn - not to mention the career defining outings from pesci, liotta, bracco and several actors whose names i must admit slip my mind - simply put goodfellas is one of the best movies ive ever seen and every bit as sprawling an epic as dances (it just covers its ground at a faster pace)

'93 actor winner: Tom Hanks for Philadelphia

my choice: Daniel Day Lewis for In The Name Of The Father

i gave one to tom, but i also have to take one back - its not even one of his top 3 or 4 performances and lewis IS on glorious display in another of the best movies ive ever seen - theres no questioning this guys chops, he is so eminantly watchable and utterly convincing - if anyone has not seen ITNOTF yet, PLEASE go rent it tonight! youll see what i mean

1998 Best Actor in a Leading Role: Winner: Jack Nicholson in As Good as it gets.

Should have won: Robert Duvall in The Apostle.

Jack was great in that role, don't get me wrong. But this is the biggest rape of an award in the history of the Oscars. Robert Duvall's performance in an otherwise unremarkable film was simply supurb. The finest single male acting performance of all time. Few have come close, but none can truely compare to this piece of acting.

    Ever.

Scorsese for his masterpiece, Casino, rather than Mel Gibson for that piece of crap.

I strongly agree. Duvall was great but best ever? I don't know about that but Nicholson wasn't even that good in As Good As It Gets. It was a clear win for Duvall and the decision was a real blemish for the Oscars. It wasn't close at all.

I'll agree fully with this one.

    But this is just rediculous.

Hopkins was just unbelievable that year.

Well, I'll give you that. After all, Nick Nolte got nominated that year fer cryin' out loud. NICK NOLTE.

Couldn't agree more. They kind of made up for it last year with his Oscar for Training Day. Not sure he really deserved the Oscar for that one, but these votes always tend to be a year or two behind anyway. It's like the Academy reads all the bad press and all the comments about who got snubbed, so they try to make up for it the next time around. These awards turn into lifetime achievement awards instead of evaluating them based solely on the merits of the performance. Not that that always happens, but certainly could be argued in this case. By the way, who won instead of Denzel?

For me, Pulp Fiction losing Best Picture to Forrest Gump. Forrest Gump was a quintessential American movie, but Pulp Fiction spawned a generation of movies. A true original.

    People!
You are forgetting the most obvious one!
    1997 BEST FILM: 'Titanic'.
    Should have been 'LA Confidential'

    2002 BEST ACTRESS: Halle Berry
Should have been either Nicole Kidman or Sissy Spacek.

    2002 BEST ACTOR: Denzel Washington.
As good was Denzel was in 'Training Day' (one of my favourite films) Russel was nothing short of BRILLIANT for 'A Beautiful Mind.' Was robbed because of bad publicity. Who cares? I would give an Oscar to Osama Bin Laden if he gave a performance that warrants a oscar. I don't care about his background or history.

1998 BEST FILM: Shakespeare in Love
    'Saving Private Ryan' was robbed.

    1999 BEST ACTRESS: Hilary Swank
Ok, yes she was brilliant. I was just bitter and sentimental because I love Annete Bening and her performance in American Beauty blew me away.

    2003 BEST ACTRESS: Renee Zelwegger
Nicole Kidman was robbed by false rumours of a non-existent "relationship" with Jude Law and the hype caught up in Chicago. (Im just looking into the future here because I can see this happening and I don't like it. ;))

We have a clairvoyant, although you may want to include Chicago also in the inevitable "Best Picture" category as well. It sure seems like the hype always overwhelms the actual merits of the films.

Private Ryan over Shakeaspeare in Love althought Shakeaspeare in love has my favorites ending shot.
Gladiator winning best picture (anyone else should have been instead).

Also Zellweger shouldn't have won best actress. I thought she wasn't that great in Chicago and Zeta-Jones usptaged her.

    Good thing she didn't, then.

Best Picture changes off the top of my head...

1993 -- The Remains Of The Day over Schindler's List

2001 -- virtually anything (Yi Yi, Chicken Run, Traffic) over Gladiator)

2002 -- Mulholland Dr. over A Beautiful Mind

    Acting:

1999 -- Russell Crowe in The Insider over Kevin Spacey in American Beauty

1998 -- Nick Nolte in Affliction over Roberto Begnini in Life Is Beautiful

1997 -- Judi Dench in Mrs. Brown over Helen Hunt in As Good As It Gets

I forgot the biggest screw up of all. "Citizen Kane" over "How was my Valley". Kane ,which is considered the best film of all time, didn't win the best picture oscar.

In 93 he won for Scent of a Women, not Godfather.
