In fact, there have only been two seasons when we *didn't* have at least one African player. http://www.thebesteleven.com/2009/04/all-time-african-players-in-mls-by.html
By the numbers: 1996: 2 1997: 4 1998: 3 1999: 3 2000: 1 2001: 0 2002: 2 2003: 2 2004: 1 2005: 1 2006: 0 2007: 3 2008: 3 2009: 5
I wonder what Chiquinho Conde is up to? Oh nevermind, just googled and found out. The '97 team were probably my favorite Revs side of the 90s. Edwin Gorter was great.
Watching him lead the players in doing victory belly surfing across the wet field after the 4-3 win against TB on Mothers Day (The Hypothermia Bowl) is one of my all time best Rev memories.
Hahaha I remember that one! That was a wacky game. Gorter had a cannon for a shot! If I remember right, he scored the winner that game? Beto Naveda's midfield goal against Colorado from that season is right up there for me. Parkie's midfield strike at Toronto a couple years ago proves those types of goals come along about once a decade. Retro Revs memories, Doc we should start a thread (good offseason topic?).
I think he did. Mussa Shannon had a hat trick for TB. He'd score, we answered---he scored. we answered, he scored and we answered and then Merlin got the winner. It was the worst weather I've ever seen in May. We stared out with 16-18K in the stands and by half time there was less than 5K left. COLD driving rain made it a very dangerous weather day unless you had dressed for it, were drunk or just nuts. There is a reason it was dubbed the Hypothermia Bowel yea, we'll do a memory thread right after we win MLS Cup 2009
Given his flare-up with David Nakhid (for those who don't recall, think KKKrew fans), one wonders how a late-90's era Gorter would have fit with this team? Stylistically, he'd be an ideal orchestrator for all the speed on the wings and up front, but it might be an interesting clubhouse mix.
I don't recall that the blame for the Nakhid dustup was a one-way street. Seemed like racial issues showed up in other settings for Nakhid but not for other teammates. Not that I expect Gorter was blameless, but I expect that 30 minutes with Shalrie and any issues he had would get worked out.
Taking a (non revs related) jab at the debate sports analysists were having this past off season that the Red Sox were purposely getting rid of all African American and 'black' players? Get over it.
You were taking a jab at the Red Sox calling them the KKK. Btw that was not a debate that was taking place. It was talk of "black" players notplaying baseball anymore.
NO, you are wrong, again.... http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/...nts-shun-the-Sox??CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=49 Red Sox specific, at the time of this article the only african american on the team was coco crisp...
But he didn't call them the SoKKK's lik you did. It was one guy and he was blasted by everyone for this, and you said it was debate. That debate ended after this came out. The article does not say anything like you said by again say SoKKK's.
You didn't just take a jab. You made an inappropriate joke about an issue that is still alive and well today, and by trying to hide behind your "the media did it" argument, have simply perpetuated the problem. You are not funny, your comment was not funny, and simply yapping at someone to "get over it" doesn't solve the problem. The article in question didn't state that black players were purposely being cut, but that there is less of a volume of black players in the sport today. If you seriously think Coco was moved because of the color of his skin, then you are the one with the issue. Are the Celtics racist because they put mostly black men on the floor? On the flipside, are the Bruins racist because they have no black players? You ought to read a little deeper into the conversations regarding race and professional sports athletes before making such a stupid remark. Next time you choose to make a tasteless joke, know your audience. Most people on here aren't pleased with that kind of crap, and in case you didn't notice, "non-Revs-related" translates to other Boston area sports, which many people on here also follow. And if you don't like when people go against what you're saying, you should take your own advice and get over it--it's a message board. Sarah
Then again some of us couldn't care less about anything baseball related, joke or otherwise, Sox or not.
And it's also obvious that some posters aren't much interested in Political Correctness. Of course we all know PC is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
