Revos credibility hits a shameful new low

    Snippet from today's El Globo:
"What to make of WEEI's morning hosts, John Dennis and Gerry Callahan, running clips and making fun of Jon Meterparel for broadcasting Wednesday night's Revolution-Wizards game off of a monitor from Gillette Stadium instead of from Kansas City? Broadcasting international soccer, auto racing, bicycle stage races, and even overseas America's Cup races from studios in the United States is commonplace, but it's not done in day-to-day coverage of Boston's pro teams. The listeners -- if there were any -- were owed an explanation during the post-midnight delayed broadcast. There was no shame in the truth. But talking about the weather at the stadium, plane connections, steak dinners in KC, and the like, even in jest, as Meterparel and partner Mike Noonan apparently were, was deceptive. The game was shown live on FSNE at 8, but the radio broadcast was on tape following the Red Sox-Rangers game. The radio pair gets to call tomorrow's 6 p.m. game against Chicago in person."

How low can the Revos credibility sink?
Right now, it is difficult to tell if there is any left.

    This is shameful!
Not that they did a broadcast from a TV monitor elsewhere, as the European Champions League games on ESPN are done, but because they attempted to pass it off as the real thing.

Meterparel isn't too popular on this board, but the roots to this sink much deeper than him.
Things like this wouldn't happen unless the organisation allowed them to happen.

This is the same organisation that sees nothing wrong with having its public relations director doing the television analysis, putting him into a no-win situation where he will never be allowed or able to provided honest analysts because of his dual roles.

    https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=47044

Then they are too cheap to send a broadcast team on the road (better not to even bother than have a dishonest delayed debacle), and allow for a dishonest product to be foisted on any unsuspecting fans that are listening.

It begs the question: what is next?

Maybe the Gillette Stadium scoreboard operator can reverse the scores of games when the truth doesn't suit the home team?

Can't wait for the launch of the new, improved, zippity do dah website so that we can be told what is really happening in Revosland. The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

This is an organisation that continues to disrespect the intelligence of its own fans. Shame on them for doing it and shame on us because our love of the game allows it to continue to happen.

Yep, if I were a Revs fan this would be keeping me up at night, too.

Hey, anyone for a Daniel Hernandez/Bobby Rhine swap?

Is Meter paid by WEEI or the Revs?

If it's WEEI, then you should have no gripe with Revs management. Obviously, if the Revs are paying for their airtime then Meter has to go.

I'm a big fan of WEEI, and believe or not, I get a good kick out of some of the jokes that are made at Meter's expense. In that regard, I think he's a nice piece to the morning show. However, what he said was wrong and he should be punished.

And I have absolutely no problem with the Revs not paying for a broadcast team to go on the road so long as they either pick up a feed from somehwere, be it the home team's crew or some guy sitting at home watching on TV.

whatever station buys the rights from the pats to host "patriots monday" or whatever to have "exclusive" post game coverage and other ammenities i'm sure....agrees to pick up the revs coverage as part of the package.

the revs, i'm sure, have to approve the on-air talent that weei picks...but, meter is eei's baby. and they don't give a hoot about what a bunch of soccer fans think. only if kraft soccer (er...the pats) complains would they listen.

i'm sure they had no clue what meter did and probably just read about it this morning like everyone else.

hey, fire off an email to sunil (sunilg@revolutionsoccer.net) to voice you're displeasure if you'd like.

btw, a "shameful low" is really the revs being the only mls team not to participate in the "soccer equip for iraq" drive that is going on last wknd and this. esp, since they had TWO home games. please, bitch about that instead.

    Rev-eler,

    Please read:

    http://www.mlsnet.com/content/03/mls0506iraq.html

Quote: "In order to reach and surpass the 10,000-ball goal, each of the 10 MLS teams have initiated a ball drive in their local markets to encourage fans and other organizations to support this cause by donating a new or used soccer ball. In addition, each MLS team will donate extra balls and equipment on hand."

So while a specific match day at Gillette Stadium has not yet been provided, the league has confirmed (albeit implicitly) that the Revolution will be participating. So I'm not worrying too much about this, and hopefully the Revolution will announce details soon.

Hey, they could do it for the triple-header and draw upon a much larger crowd for donations than has previously shown up at Gillette this season; that makes a lot of sense.

However I do take serious issue with any effort to purposefully mislead and willfully provide false information.

    And this affects you how...

I've been critical more than once of the team's management. There's certainly a lot to choose from in that regard. But I'm sorry if I don't lose sleep over this at night. I always watch the Champions League matches where the commentators are in the studio and, frankly, I don't notice the difference. As long as the commentators words are reasonably intelligent and correspond with the pictures I'm seeing, it really doesn't matter. I'm not so much a purist where I get upset over things that don't affect my enjoyment of the game. Then again, this wouldn't be Big Soccer if someone weren't screaming about something.

(BTW-I believe you misspelled Le Havre in your teams section)

I'm sure Liberian football or Angolan football would be just as grateful for such an effort.

Not for nothing, but haven't we done enough for Iraq? Why not let France supply the balls to Iraq?

Oh I forgot, the Fench have no balls!

Re: And this affects you how...

In essence, I agree with your comments. This really has no bearing on the match, and I didn't wind up listening anyway because I hadn't realized it was tape delayed (I flew back from NY and missed the first half driving to watch the match).

I do have a complaint that if you didn't know that they weren't at KC, their comments sure made it sound like they were (they were replayed on air Thursday morning). While it is common to have the on-air guys not be at the site of the match, I don't think it's ethically/morally right for them to be pretending that they are there.

I guess it's just more of an issue for me anyway of right and wrong. You're not in KC, so stop pretending you are and trying to convince your listeners that you are there.

Just my $0.02. 25.5 hours till the lil' cryin' b*tch comes back to Gillette... welcome back Razov.

This was the standard arrangement for baseball radio broadcasts into the 40s (the info came by telegraph, not TV feed), and announcers were expected to pretend that they were at the game. In fact, Dizzy Dean famously got into trouble (not real trouble, but his bosses waived their collective finger at him) for saying on air that he was in a studio reading from a ticker tape.

I assume the only real change is that there is now enough money out there that it is only rarely that a radio station (and it's the station making this decision unless the Krafts are buying the time) wants to broadcast an event without going to the expense of sending somebody.

A tempest in a teapot, for my money.

hey magpie, i have to disagree with your notion that something will be put together by the revs, for us fans to participate in. i emphasize the fan participation aspect b/c, as i posted on this topic before, that i talked to the communications office at mls where i was told that "the revs would not be participating because of organizational issues". now, the revs could be sending a financial donation along and that's fine....except it eliminates fans of the revs from the process, which is what i'm peeved with. in addition, all teams were/are doing their drives either last weekend or this coming weekend, so i doubt the revs would do anything at another point.

and saabrian, in my previous post on this subject in another thread i started was that there are probably better ways to help the iraqi youth..however, we're talking about a soccer community (in mls) and a soccer event...so, why not make a soccer related gesture to a country that took great pride in their soccer teams successes throughout their region for many years.

i also said that i'd likely make a donation if mls decided to help soccer in tibet or if mls tried to help youth soccer in areas specifically around mls cities.

as for meter, sure he's having a little inside joke with himself and probably throwing back a few "cold ones" with noonan....its just plain disrespectful and not really professional. he's really only hurting his own professional credibility by doing this stuff....so i don't really care all that much if they take him out behind the shed or not.

All of the folks here at the Kraft Mansion are just pleased as punch to learn that we can tell our fans absolutely anything and they'll believe it all, hook, line and sinker.

You don't care what we shovel your way so long as there is a team.

In honor of this relevation, we are going to give all of our loyal supporters a copy of the New York Times tomorrow as they enter the best damn stadium in the world to watch the best damn team this side of Real Madrid.
Copies will also be available in Braille.

We used to cross the plains in covered wagons, too.

I think there have been some technological advances in communications over the past 70 years.
What happened in the 1930s and 40s in broadcasting has no bearing on anything today.

The point is not that the announcers were not physically at the game, but that they were purposely dishonest about it. That doesn't wash today.

If you have no problem with being lied to, or at the very least being deceived, then at some level you and your money will soon be parted.

The fact that the broadcast was done remotely doesn't bother me at all. If this is part of cost cutting to keep the team here then keep it up.

I think Meter took it too far, as he usually does, in trying to convince his listener(s) that he was there by slipping in lies about flight connections and KC steaks. Pretty sleezy but wouldn't you expect that from a worm.

Hey Big Frank, why do you blame this on the Revs and rev management??? Lets lay this at the feet of JM and and suggest that the powers to be put his head on the block.

JM is a marginal player in the grand scheme of things having to do with the Revs. He does his job poorly at best and now has stepped on his worm and been nailed for his duplicity. Buuaabyeeee!

Perhaps folks read yesterdays NY Times piece about the advance Bush team that scouts camera angles and lighting patterns for TV and public appearences. Thusly we get our leader framed by the presidential sculptures at Mt. Rushmore or landing a jet in soft, magical evening light. How does this relate to a faked broadcast of a soccer game in the middle of the night? Simple. Juxtapositions of obvious untruths or manipulations always hurt the credibility of those who do it in the long run.

Meterparl's credibility as a sports journalist simply sinks below the waterline..

It's already lower than that. Thank goodness I get to hear Jack and someone else on the Shootout, for the slight chance Meterputzel gets to work a TV game again.

    er....yawn

    uh...double yawn

seriously guys are you ************ing kidding me with this?!

I know I know I am a half assed fan because I don't care about the minutia of the Rev's business operations or the fact that they broadcast a few games the way almost 100% of the games on FSW are broadcast.

Jeez care about player salaries, acquisitions, tactics, ticket trade in policies and stuff that actually matters. Seams the people who complain about this stuff are the ones who always have an axe to grind about every little thing and are always threatening to 'never come back' etc...
