Something Revs fans have been hoping for (in some cases for three years) finally happened as Nicol and the Revs have part-ways. He gave us our best seasons ever, no doubt ... but it was time.
I wouldn't be shocked to hear his name associated with the Colorado job if Gary Smith's contract isn't renewed.
Much respect to Steve. Helluva damn coach. Hope he lands somewhere else in the league. Sadly, I don't think this will cure much in New England.
Agreed. That would be hilarious. Well said, and you're exactly right on the last part. This absolutely can't be a scapegoat situation. Many more changes are required, just as this one (sadly) was.
He was actually at the top of my list of coaches that I would want in KC had PV not turned things around. I figured he would be gone at the end of the season. I think sometimes things get stale and a person needs a fresh start to rejuvenate them.
Steve Nichol will pop up again in MLS and do well again. He'll also be shocked at what it is like managing a team that doesn't play in a morgue.
Steve Nicol out as coach of Revs ESPN Change is always good, 10 years is a long time for coach and hope this brings other changes like getting the stadium issues worked on and doing a better job of scouting players from South America. I almost forgot the owners.
I heard off hand recently that the Revs were actually making money at some point in the last decade. This was compounded by a tweet someone posted to Jen Chang, senior editor of soccer at SI. Chang also posted this story: On 1 trip to South America a few seasons ago, Nicol & his staff came back with a list of 20+ players they felt would take Revs to next level. All would have been of pricey by MLS standards but affordable (one was striker Jose Sand). Revs front office turned down the entire list.
But the information he's posted has been confirmed in bits and pieces by different people. Also, this past season, Nicol had arranged contracts with a couple players in Turkey and FO turned him down on every single one. These kinds of stories have been coming out for years from source all over the globe. I have a hard time believing that they're all false.
hmmm. a certain saying about the Titanic, deckchairs and the rearrangement of said comes to mind with this news.
