    Nice article by Jeff Bradley

Another interesting article from Jeffrey B. at MLSnet:

MLS Insider: It's All About Team

Great job by Bradley. One quote struck me though:

I agree and disagree with this. For those guys who broadcast exclusively for one team's games (for example Adrian and Doug), I think it's not only appropriate but good that they show an affinity for the home team. This should never slant the way they portray the actual events that occur, but the fact that they actual enjoy watching and take a special interest in watching the "home" team is part of what makes watching the broadcast enjoyable. I'd expect nothing less if the sport were baseball, American football, basketball, or hockey. And if you look around - you'll see this is, almost without exception, the case.

What irks me more is certain announcers who do national broadcasts who clearly have an affiliation for one or two teams, but pretend they don't. This affiliation almost always shows up in the way they relay the game and the way they portray the players. Again, not mentioning any names, but I just had an opportunity to watch the tape of Thursday's game... hope this is the kind of thing Jeff had in mind.

Rodan is right. There's nothing wrong with being a home town announcer.

If you aren't a "homer" when an announcing for your team- the question would be why...? You play to your audience...so part of the job should include trying to keep the home fans involved and excited about their team...build up some excitement and heat up the passion for your home town team.
One of the great and enjoyable things about watching the early NBA was to watch the game on the tube- but listen to the "home" radio feeds from whatever city you were in. I remember one time when Johnny Most had a Laker player "almost ripping his arm off... and there's no call" when on the screen the C's player didn't not even appear to receive more than hand checked type of touch.

    I still miss him.

"And now Jabar is crying! He says 'you can't call a foul on me! My name's Kareeeem Abduuuul Jabaaaaaaah!"

if you've ever watched a DC or Metrostars game on MLS Shootout, you'd know that Bradley is right. Some announcers are somewhat impartial, namely the SJ announcers. now, i think it is OK, to show a little affection for your team, but not to the point where you hurt your credibility. the goons from DC totally think that everybody else is the league is a dirty player who gets lucky b/c their team let their guard down (i guess this season, DC just wanted to let somebody else have a shot, in their opinion). oh well...

I'd say Kovalenko is McFilthy. Ratzov is McNasty.

John Schroeder and John Doyle. Doyle is bothersome because he excuses thuggish defenders too often and jokes about them instead of helping listeners understand how thuggish play damages the beautiful game, but what can you expect? It's John Doyle.

I didn't see today's Revolution Notes by FDA on the Globe website... there's a bit from Harris about momentum, some stuff on DMB's failed overseas bids, and an encouraging bit on Rusty:

    Pierce may be tabbed
Rusty pierce, who has been out since straining his groin in a 3-0 win over DC United Sept. 7, is the top candidate to replace Carlos Llamossa, who is suspended for Wednesday's game, said interm coach Steve Nicol. Pierce practiced at nearly full speed last week.

I think it's a matter of opinion and a matter of degree. Someone like Jerry Remy is very good I think. Johnny Most was a joke, IMHO. You would have no idea what was happening in the game listening to him - every game sounded like a wrestling match.
