As one of the 'wet but happy' 6306, I found Gus Martins' phrasing quite entertaining. I may never actually by a copy of the Herald, but I definitely think he is a livelier and more interesting writer than Frank Dell'Appa. Re: the George Kimball piece, isn't he one of their main columnists? I.e., not a soccer guy?
Yes he is and it is nice to see that he really seems to understand what is going on here. Most of the other mainstream guys couldn't care less. Well done George.
I must admit I'm getting a bit tired of people saying that the style the Revs are playing isn't attractive soccer. Watching the defense flowing back in forth in front of the Fire last night, picking off passes and they counter attacking with speed and style was beautiful. What do people want? Maybe people just need something negative to say so they don't appear too enthusiastic Look out Fire--were coming to your house to get ya!
My 2 cents: Revs are keeping it very basic - sound defense and limited touches in any buildup. if i never see the words "brazil" or "pragmatic" in a globe soccer article ever again.....i'll be ecstatic.

In 2000 and 2001, as Chicago was rolling to 57 and 53 point seasons and Central Division crowns, the New England Revolution were a constant thorn in their side -- especially when they played in Foxboro. Then, this season, when the Revs add a boatload of new talent and Chicago struggles with injuries, the Fire find their groove against the Revs, and go 2-1-1, and win twice on the Revs new home field, CMGI … err … Gillette Field. Adding to the irony, the Fire's leading scorer, Ante Razov, who used to miss chances from every conceivable angle at the old Foxboro Stadium, scored four goals in two games at Gillette. Style Points: Soccer America's grumpy, old columnist Paul Gardner pulled a quote from New England's Joey Franchino, who said, "You always know it's going to be a physical game against Chicago," and used it to illustrate that Chicago is a rough bunch. As if Franchino was pulled off the fields of Brazil. Plain and simple, New England and Chicago will get after each other in the midfield. The Revs will try to keep Fire playmaker Peter Nowak from setting up Razov. The Fire will try to keep close tabs on setup man Steve Ralston, who will be trying to find MLS points leader Taylor Twellman. Gut feeling is there will be goals in this series. Where are we headed? Seriously, I would not be shocked to see three straight draws leading to a series overtime (aka mini-game). Revs advance on PKs after all the ties."
My 7 year old writes with more flair than Dell'Appa.According to him Revs did nothing right, just a series of Fire blunders. He recycles columns and phrases and rarely interviews anyone. Probabaly too much trouble to haul his ass to the 'Boro. I am glad the Globe covers the Revs but I have trouble reading his columns. It is painful reading, surely enough to put any non-soccer fan to sleep.
This has got to be close to the quote of the year: "I expected to be here on Oct. 20, but I certainly didn't expect to be here in late September,'' said MLS commissioner Don Garber. (He was referring to knowing he was coming here for the MLS Cup, but being very surprised giving us the Eastern Div. trophy last night.)
I told LittleFrank not to read this thread because I didn't want his feelings hurt. I thought LF's piece in Thursday's El Globo on Nicol was excellent.
I agree. That one was very well done, but FDA should have a disclaimer at the beginning of all his game stories saying "I think the Revs and MLS both stink because they have no Brazilians, but I'm getting paid, so here's my report on the game."
Yup, Liverpool, Italy, oh maybe Juventus, possibly Bayren Munich and, certainly, France when they were on top are really boring. All these teams, ZiZou aside, were/are defense first formations when they were/are in their pomp. Come on, jogo bonito exists in the misty minds of a number of the more romantic writers who tend to remember Tostao and forget Gentile. Football is BOTH offense and defense and they are BOTH very, very difficult to play well. The only thing that truly sucks is unadorned "up and under Routh One" style which these Rev definitely do NOT play. We certainly could have more flare but we are in NO POSITION to be greedy. Come on FDA, lighten up and give full marks where they are due. And TT and Ralston, etc. aren't exciting? Plus the highest number of goals in the league and ever by a Revs team? Hmmmmmnnn. JIM DOW
Oh, I should add, 99.9% of US colleges and high schools DO play up and under and that is why the hope of this country is in the club and local league game. JIM DOW
