I realize that comments in the press need to be taken with a grain of salt but I'm surprised there haven't been more comments about this news report. In fact this article seems to have Joseph's play last Saturday as showing himself to be an attacking midfielder player of significant quality and potential. He was marginal against the Crew but it sounds like he grew up against the Burn. From all reports he's a player with rare physical gifts. He's played both Forward and Defense in College. Could he emerge as a real attacking midfielder well suited to SN's system?

I've watched the tape twice (I know, it's pathetic but I do spend 80 minutes a day on a spinning bike) and Joseph gets better with each viewing. He uses his body beautifully, plays the simple ball well and tries the odd diagonal ball with skill. He sent two crossfield bombs to feet and almost scored twice and took two other good shots. Maybe this is a one off but he certainly looked very good.

I definitely thought he played better on Saturday than against the Crew, but before we send him off the the allstar game, I though Darren Sawatski and John De Brito looked good for a couple games too.

    Bingo.

I'll never forget one match with these two Latino guys sitting behind me who yelled in Spanish the whole game, but I could tell when they were talking about Sawatzkey because they kept calling him "Susie." And dragging it out: Sooooo-sieeee.

He was Susie to me forever afterward.

    Totally.

I'm somewhat mystified about the criticism of his play against Cbus. I thought he represented a huge improvement in the team for the 2nd half. The Revs were totally overwhelmed in the 1st half. With Joseph in the 2nd, they at least held their own (at least in the center). Anyone playing in the center of a team under pressure, like the revs were, is going to lose their share of balls. But he intercepted far more than he lost and used his long reach to tackle well and shield the ball. Center mid is not a position to run around like a chicken in professional soccer, which I think some people want to see. It requires a unique sense of timing and positioning. For a guy's 1st professional minutes, I thought he was outstanding. I believe he was the ONLY one Nicol singled out for praise in that game.

I agree with the assessment of Joseph in the Crew game. I thought he played very well. He had one "bad" play when he hesitated to go after a loose ball because he thought another Rev was going to go for it. Other than that, he looked good to me. When I watched the tape of the game, it confirmed my view. I couldn't understand why some people were so negative about him.

I won't speak for anyone else, but my comment at the time was that in the Crew game, Joseph looked like someone playing in his first MLS game. From where I sat, he certainly looked raw, but certainly doesn't mean I don't think he can play, only that it's way too early to be making final judgements.

So who really won that interzonal playoff? Martinique, who play the US and El Salvador, or Honduras, which has to play Mexico (in the Azteca) and Brazil?

I am pretty sure that it's in my season ticket package. If I remember rightly, there is the Triple Header and then there are two double headers that are just Gold Cup games. The tickets didn't specify teams because not all of them had been chosen yet.
