A Frank Dell'Appa (?) article from the Worcester Telegram & Gazette that I didn't see in the Globe on-line version. Can't link without an account, so here's the article: Revs, Chicago battle to 1-1 tie Moore ejected in N.E. return Revolution 1 - Fire 1 Frank Dell'Apa, BOSTON GLOBE NAPERVILLE, Ill.- Joe-Max Moore received the short-shrift treatment on his official Revolution return last night. Moore was red-carded by referee Terry Vaughn in the 74th minute, stifling what had been a lively match as the Revolution and Chicago Fire tied, 1-1. DaMarcus Beasley gave the Fire the lead in the 35th minute and Taylor Twellman tied the score in the 41st minute in both teams' MLS season-opener in Cardinal Stadium. Moore replaced Wolde Harris in the 68th minute. Moore produced a cross on his first offensive advance, but the Fire defended it well, counterattacking through Justin Mapp. Six minutes later, Moore was ejected for a tackle on Mapp. Moore did not go quietly, either, instead raging at Vaughn to see the light for several seconds. The Revolution then retreated into defense, with Twellman as a lone striker. But the Revolution failed to mount a counterattacking threat, allowing Chicago to press forward, at least until the 83rd minute, when Beasley was carded for fouling Twellman from behind. Daouda Kante then one-timed Daniel Hernandez's free kick barely wide from the goal area, and seconds later Joe Franchino ran 60 yards and curled a right-footed shot which Zach Thornton saved. Chicago stayed in control for the remainder of regulation. Leo Cullen was cautioned for fouling Chris Armas from behind in the 89th minute, but the Revolution's Hernandez earned a free kick during injury time, and Franchino's nicely struck shot was knocked away by Thornton, who collided so hard with his left post that Vaughn stopped to adjust the goal before allowing the Revolution to take the corner kick. Brian Kamler volleyed a chipped pass from Cullen just over the goal 15 seconds into overtime. The Revolution adjusted quickly to the artificial surface, attacking over the top and as directly as possible. When the Revolution did find Steve Ralston on the right, their offense flowed, producing one of the best sequences of the opening half, concluded by a left-footed blast by Twellman which was blocked by a leaping Carlos Bocanegra in the 29th minute. Bocanegra slowly recovered from the deflection and Vaughn briefly suspended play. There was some justice in the action, though, since a Bocanegra elbow had caused a Twellman concussion during US national team training camp in Florida in January. The Revolution pressured Thornton early, the best chance started by Harris's steal from Kelly Gray which sent Twellman in alone. But Thornton deflected Twellman's indecisive attempt. The Fire threatened, claiming a penalty as Rodrigo Faria and Jay Heaps collided in the 17th minute, then nearly scored as Jim Curtin's point-blank rebound was stopped by Adin Brown in the 21st minute. Andy Williams set up the Fire's first-half goal, stealing from Ralston, then finding Faria in the penalty area. Faria laid off to Beasley, who was knocked off balance by Franchino. Vaughn allowed play to continue, and Beasley regained his balance and slid a shot past Brown with Ralston in pursuit. Twellman tied the score in the 41st minute, again going in alone off a slick through ball from Harris, but this time rounding Thornton. Twellman went to the ground near the goal area after contact from two pursuing Chicago players, but poked a slow, left-foot shot off the left post. Twellman regained his feet and shot left-footed off Gray and into the net. Two minutes later, though, Vaughn whistled a penalty after a Faria's cross deflected off Heaps's face and right hand. But Brown dove to his right to block Faria's penalty kick and stuffed Faria's left-footed smash on the rebound. Seconds later, the Revolution's Brian Kamler's header missed inches wide with a header off a Harris cross. The Bocanegra-Twellman battle accelerated early in the second half. Bocanegra was cautioned for taking down Twellman in the 55th minute.
Delapper, moments of clarity that trail off into the ether; is it just me or do his pieces read like he just kind of falls asleep in the middle of a conversation?
The axe falls. From FDA in the Globe article: ". . . The Revolution plan to waive Jamaican midfielder Winston Griffiths, who played in 13 games last season, because of the addition of Jason Moore." From Gus in the Herald: "It appears Revolution midfielder Winston Griffiths could be waived today. No announcement has come from the team because Griffiths hasn't taken an exit physical that would allow the team to part ways with him, provided he sustained no injuries in training with the club." Does this leave us with room for another senior roster player without cutting anyone?
Re: The axe falls. I hope they told Griffiths he's getting canned before they released it to the press. It would suck to read the paper and find out you're losing your job. Who knows though, Gus says its unconfirmed...
Yup. As far as I can determine we still have a regular roster slot open and now we have two SI slots open. I guess the Revs feel that they will find an AMF soon.
It's good to see the Telegram and Gazette picking up Frank's Globe stuff, especially for the road games. It's much better than the sparse AP stories they'd otherwise use. I hope they'll let their own soccer guy, Rich Garven, keep covering the home games, though. He does an excellent job.
Tony Biscaia posted some other 4/14 articles here: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=44005 Sorry - I would make that a nifty little link if I knew how.
