as usual, all the news that can be gleaned from the Net without ever having to actually do any reporting.
From the Globe: "Cardozo set what is believed to be a goal-scoring record for a calendar year. The world record for a season is 67, set by Archie Stark of Bethlehem Steel of the American Soccer League in 1924-25." Someone like Dave Litterer needs to chime in here, but I don't think the ASL (or any outdoor US league) ever played a fall-to-spring schedule (especially in places like Pennsylvania and other northeastern cities where the ASL was based). From what I remember looking at old records, the seasons were always a full calendar year, running roughly parallel to the baseball season, so the season the amazing Mr. Clark scored all his goals was probably not from the fall of '24 through the spring of '25. Nonetheless, it's remarkable that a US player from over 75 years ago is still on the record books for a feat like that, especially considering the number of games played today. Then again, the game was more high-scoring then too, with many teams having 4 or 5 forwards. Tom
