I noticed that the league managed to add a few years to Taylor's contract during the renegotiation. I guess that they are continuing to "punish" him for going to Europe...

i think this is good for everyone. if taylor gets more interest from europe or some other league we would all be happy to see him succeed on a larger stage and mls would get some transfer fee out of it. i don't really see him getting "punished"....in this instance. he's definitely getting the amount of $ that most of us thought he should get at this stage. plus, the endorsements etc that mls probably helped set up. and, who knows, there may be an increase anually that's not being bandied about either.

He's 22. Let him play 4 years in the MLS and the next WC in Germany. He'll have plenty of European offers after that.

I think this deal works out especially well for the player, but also for the league in terms of how the contract is seemingly set-up. If the league had gnoe ahead and renegotiated a new contract that could open a Pandora's box with respect to future players & agents, feeling the need to renegotiate a new contract in relatively short order.

Twellman gets a contract extension, a higher base salary, and signficant achievable incentives. Also to note, it would seem that Twellman's contract allows for greater income potential up-front: i.e., rather than seeing a progressive increase in net pay over the duration of his contract, it sounds like he'll get more up front at the cost of a contract extension.

If all goes well for Twellman he could earn a sizeable chunk of change up front, with little incentive to tie him down after a year or two provided his services are courted by clubs outside the league.

In short, the money's there, but Twellman still has to earn most of it. He has to prove he's more than a one-hit wonder.

Overall, glad to see the contract worked out.

From today's Boston Globe on Twellman,

" He also has a deal with Nike, so money is not an issue any more, and he can focus on playing."

I wonder if Nike could become the Rev's next uniform supplier after UMBRO.

Why is this "punishment?" Why shouldn't MLS (or the Revs) get something in return for renegotiating an existing contract, which they do not have to do, to pay a player more money?

If they don't extend his contract Twellman continues to play well and goes to Europe and MLS and the Revs get nothing, why is that an ok result?

    It's called negotiating, not punishment.

I was being sarcastic. Every news article about Twellman's contract discussions took the agent's stance, that the league punished Taylor for going to Germany by offering him a low initial contract (as opposed to offering him more than was necessary to sign him...)

Hell I'll drive Rooney down there myself to get rid of him

As for Carlos - just his presence alone is reason to keep him. Learn the lesson of Francis ,Revs, sometimes an old man in the middle of the defense is a good thing

Great news. This seems like a good thing for everybody. I hope Taylor gets all the incentives he can, if you know what I mean.

I wasn't really worried about resigning him, but now that it seems they have agreed, I do feel better.

I wonder what the terms were?

soccertim: I also thought you were serious as opposed to sarcastic before your clarification.

Don't laugh. You'll probably get a call from one of the Revs front office people - the penurious variety - wanting to take you up on this when the day comes [...Ring...Ring...Ring..."Hello."..."Hello, George, this is Mordecai of the New England Revolution. Can you swing by the stadium at around noon time today? Please make sure you have a full tank, some Rogaine and some juice boxes - preferably Juicy Juice. Cape Cod Chips, too!"].

Once again FDA can't get his facts straight.

I'm convinced he feels the only way to fit in with his boston media colleagues is to be controversial when controversy doesn't exist! FDA writes," ...Twellman will return to the Revolution.
Frank, what planet have you been on the last 5 months? Taylors' return to the Revs was NEVER an issue, repeat NEVER! He was under contract. Gulati spelled that out in the Nicol press conference ("...Twellman is under contract with MLS and will be playing with the Revs in 2003 unless he is traded. Period.")

Did Frank believe that sitting out was an option Taylor was considering? Yeah, that would be smart. I'm sure Arena would call him up to the national team even though he wouldn't be playing with his club. Taylor is smart enough to realize that he has a dream come true opportunity to play for his national team and that is what will get him a big payday.

Frank, you are the posterchild of cluelessness!

Hey, say what you will about how far Rooney's skills have fallen, but the man is a former carpenter. He'd NEVER drink Juicy Juice. Get the man some beer. That, or chocolate milk.

Given that he used quotes and that literally every Twellman article since the end of the season has referenced his agent's words, I figured that it was obvious that it was a joke. The league "punishing" Twellman ranks right up there with every single press release the league issued when they expanded to Miami referred to the "rabid Latino fan base" in greater Miami, neglecting to mention that the largest and richest Latino ethnic group in that area are Cubans, whose sporting tastes are more "American" (beisbol si, futenbol no) than virtually any other Spanish-speaking group.

If we can't rag on the cliche-ridden agent-driven media, who can we rag on? I can't wait for Frank's next series when the Revs train in Brasil, where the richness of culture is only surpassed by the elegant one-touch sophistication of jogo bonito, which is as much a part of every Brasiliero as a barbecue on the beach on New Year's Day is... (insert obligatory references to Brazilian music, dance, literature/poetry and carnival)

Frank Stapleton; it's all his fault, remember? ;-)

I wonder what Llamosa and Rooney would be worth to Hudson. He's stated repeatedly that he thinks that his team is too young. If we could get a high draft pick (maybe the #5) or a young player (I thought that Convey was out of favor) I'd do it in a second, especially if they project Joseph as a defender and not a midfielder. I can't see either Rooney or Carlos being in the league for more than a year or two, and I would hope that Llamosa would need to play better than he did last year to be more than a sub for us.

Yeah, in my mind FDA is quickly becoming the Jack and Ty of the soccer print media: incompetent, but appealing nonetheless.

Gee, Frank must have done a fairly good job this time...It took all the way to the 13th post for someone to dump on him.

    I'm already a fan.

How could anyone not like Nowak after reading that second FDA article?

Don't know if anyone saw the story, but Frank Stapleton is in the frame for the vacant coaching job with the Irish National Team.

    Good stuff, huh?

Happy to hear Twellman's contract is done.

As far as Hudson possibly being interested in Llamosa...I think Llamosa is good for the Revs. It's good to have a veteran around. Even if it turns out his biggest contribution isn't just what he does on the field, but what younger players can learn from him.

With the injuries we had on defense this year, I would hate to give up Llamosa (or Kante) unless we know what Joseph (and maybe even Leonard) can do. Lots of matches this year...Nicol will likely need just about every player on the roster to fill in as needed to cover for injuries, callups or to give some players a breather.

Yep, I saw it. Funny thing, there was no mention of his managing experience with the Revs in the article.

    Curious.

Who would DC offer as trade bait for such a deal?

    Petke?

Or, maybe a multi -player swap.

    LLamosa & Rooney to DC.
    DC Allocation to Dallas.
    Earnie Stweart to Dallas.
Jorge Rodriguez from Dallas to NE plus draft pick from DC.

    Curious....
