    - Well one of the topics covered in the previous issue of this thread was Outhouse, unfortunately at a concert I was at the other night, the singer informed us that the guitarist from Outhouse apparently died just recently. Not sure why and how, but still... a sad loss. Glad I got to see them as the Rome Tour Stop a few months back.

    - That concert I was speaking of was Thrust at the Uptown last Saturday. I only went because a friend of mine's band was opening up for them. I like my friends band, but the rest of the lineup wasn't exactly my taste of music. We only stayed through part of the 2nd band's set cause it was pretty band, death metal all the way.

    - Pomeroy is playing at Abe and Jake's this Friday. If you haven't seen them yet, definately check them out, it's a blast. Last time they played at Abe & Jake's, a few members of The Urge (who happened to break up recently unfortunately) opened the show up for Pomeroy. They are a great band, and one of my friends from elementary school and his buddy do break dancing during some of the songs and well as some flowin'. It's a great time, and I'll be there good and loaded having a blast. Actually, I might stay somewhat sober for this show cause out of the half-dozen times I've seen them, I don't think one of them has ever been sober.

    - The Get-up Kids are finally playing a show here in Lawrence again. Seems like it's been forever. The show is on Dec. 18th at the Bottleneck. I'll probably be there.

    - Can anyone tell me where I can find a CD I lost years ago? It's Billygoat's CD, not sure of the title and I'm not even sure they had more than 1. But I have really been missing that CD lately. It's the one that has Jam 23 on it. I've looked on the web and since this band I think broke up years ago, I haven't been able to find much. I think I might check The Love Garden here as that is probably the only place in Lawrence I'd be able to find something like that.

    - FYI: Paul Oakenfold is gonna be at The Granada on Dec. 8th. Tickets are rather steep, $33 from the box office or $42 from ServiceChargeMaster. Should be fun though.

Can't think of much else happening, though I'm sure there's plenty to talk and reminisce of with the KC/Lawrence music scene.

Yell ya I have to go this time I missed the last two times he was here.

The one bad thing about this city is it sucks for music. ALot of bands/tours don't come here which blows and the radio stations are weak. *cough 98.9 cough*

I tend to think that music itself sucks right now. Same way it did in the mid to late 80's before finally the PearlJam/Jane'sAddiction/Nirvana/SmashingPumpkins/AliceInChains/Soundgarden/REM/etc... mini revolution occurred in the early 90's. There is nothing original out there outside of some Techno things. Everything is the RapMetal or Goo Goo Doll type jingle jangle ballads, nothing that hasn't been done before. Commercial radio is stagnet all over.

I have to disagree on the point about nothing ever coming through this city. Over the past 4 to 5 years there hasn't been much that has missed. All the major acts usually run on a 2 year cycle for shows through here. Even Bruce Springsteen played here this last year (not that I like him). Then all the underground/up and coming bands at least hit Lawrence if not KC as well. I think you'd be hard pressed to name too many acts that haven't come through in the last two years.

Ya, no kidding. I can't think of many tours that skip KC. I'm a pretty big punk fan so there's not much if anything at all that I miss coming through KC, especially Lawrence.

Hell, Oakenfold at The Granada? It dumbfounds me how they pull some of this stuff of, especially the Pumpkins kicking off their world farewell tour at The Granada.

Oh, and Spoon, if you are goin to Oakenfold, I just got my tickets today. I went up to The Granada to get them ($33 bucks from them, $43 from ticketmaster) and they told me they were sold out. So I was pretty pissed, but checked ServiceChargeMaster.com and turns out they had some tickets. Not sure why the Granasty told me they were sold out, but my advice then... get your tickets quick cause who knows.

If you feel like you are getting screwed, just think about the people in NYC who have to pay over $60 for his show there coming up.

Back to the topic in hand... At least in my opinion, I think once the Lazer died, local music really died too. Lawrence was the center for a local scene in KC, and now without the extreme airplay they were getting before, it's a lot tougher for them to make it. The scene in the early-mid 90's was unbelieveable. There were some truely great bands coming out of KC. Oh well though, I guess it couldn't last forever.

Still trying to find that Billygoat CD.

    Awwww... yeah

Finally found a copy of the Billygoat CD. Somehow I came across some Dentonrockcity.com website where a guy mentioned "Hairy Apes BMX (the former Billygoat posse) is playing at...." So then I searched Hairy Apes BMX and came across a pitch weekly article that talked a lot of the trouble Billygoat got into and said that Hollywood records ditched them. So then I went to Hollywood records website and looked at how to order a non-listed CD from them, and it told me to check out another site. So I clicked on the link to the other site and Amazon freaking .com popped up, and turns out the band was named Billy Goat, not Billygoat, so that's why I couldn't find it. So there's a couple copies on there for less than $10 that I'll probably just buy off of someone.

I looked all over hell and back to find a link to Amazon.com? Jees...

Time to get my funk on. :p

Very true. The lack of a decent radio station continues to hurt Lawrence/KC.

Having to rely on internet radio for new and upcoming bands sucks and even just to hear alternative music in general. Surely KC can afford to dump one of its crappy pop stations and play some real music.

Back to the tour stuff: Beck/Flaming Lips this weekend in Lawrence. Oh yeah. :)

Yeah, that was everyone's thought when the lazer went pop, why? Isn't there already too many of those stations?

I still hold faith that someday a station will jump upu and take it's place.

When the Lazer got bought out by the national company, and the format was replaced with the pop ************************ they play now, this city lost the only good alternative radio station it's had in a long time.

96.5 the Buzz popped up a few years later (what? 3 years ago now?) and started out like they had the right idea, but quickly seemed to lose focus. And lately they seem to be moving more and more toward the pop thing as well.

Here's to hoping a decent alternative station pops up in the area in the next few years.

A few of us. I don't play much, but msg Sam and he might have some ideas.

    Pomeroy last night kicked ass.

FYI: Get up kids tickets are like $15 through ticketmaster I believe.

It was a pretty good show, not great, but good. Apparently it was a show for Toys for Tots so that kicks ass, I'm sure they raised plenty of money. Never realized how good their drummer was until I was sitting there watching him, he kicks ass.

Wow... my respect for Wes Scantlin just grew leaps and bounds. For those of you who don't recognize the name, he's the singer for Puddle of Mudd. 99% of the people out there have the assumption that Big Bad Fred Durst broke up the band and assembled a new one around Wes just cause he wanted Wes's voice. Nuh uh... Check out this interview from RockKansas.com.... http://real.morriscomm.com:8080/ramgen/rockkansas/audio_interviews/puddleofmudd1.rm

It's absolutely riveting how the whole thing played out from the beginning to where Puddle of Mudd is today. Fabulous interview.

Originally this thread (pre-crash) was just about talking of the death of the music scene here in Lawrence and KC. That's true, there wasn't much going on in terms of quality. That was probably a little less than a year ago and now, partly because of me opening up my eyes a little bit more, but also because there really is a resurgance going on, I went from pessimistic about the scene to now very optimistic. Pomeroy is getting huge now, Anything But Joey is poised for a big break, The Get Up Kids have been going strong for a few years, The Anniversary has been getting pimped nationally for about the past year, Puddle of Mudd just rose out of nowhere, Tech N9ne is oh so close to blowing up nationally more than he already has. 96.5 is turning into a really cool station by throwing local stuff in here and there. It's not the same scene that we once had, the bands are different, the style is definately different, but the quality is becoming much more similiar to what we had starting a decade ago. Some of the bands are still there though... Shallow is back as The Capsules, Paw regrouped and released a CD a few years ago. I don't think that it's much of a coincidence that The Bottleneck decided to revive their Loaded in Lawrence CD project that they used to do in the mid-90's compiling local bands all on one CD every year.

Rock is complete crap right now, at least that's just my opinion. This whole Nu'Metal thing is nausiating. I've basically abondoned 98.9 cause I hear pretty much nothing that I like. The few things I do hear that I like are played all the time.

It will be hard to compare to the scene in the mid-90's, especially without The Lazer perching it up on it's back. But I'm actually kind of excited for the scene in this nice little triangle of Omaha-Larence/KC - Manhatten because there is some good music popping up now.

Anyone else going to the Pomeroy/Anything But Joey concert at the Beaumont on the 10th? It appears that's the future right there, should be fun.

    Rock is dead?

    i dont think so.

    check out the Blood Brothers.

"Burn Piano Island Burn" coming out soon on Artist Direct, and "March on Electric Children" or their first record on Second Nature (Local KC) - "This Adultry is Ripe".

also: Small Brown Bike, Hot Water Music, or even my personal favorite The Casket Lottery.

Rock isn't dead at all - it just isn't on the radio or MTV. Then again, when has it been? One of the banes of my existence is the crap ************ rock we get at all sporting events, including Wizards games (you like that, how i tied that back in?).

    Re: Rock is dead?

When I hear The Casket Lottery I immediately think of The Get Up Kids, but to be blunt, just not as good. I can't comment on the others cause I haven't heard them.

I intended "rock" as the mainstream stuff that you will hear on 98.9. I swore that station off because there's nothing good. I swayed towards the more specific genres of rock because nowadays you have to look for something worth listening to cause you won't hear it on the radio.

I didn't say "rock is dead" keep in mind, it was "rock is crap." So you and I both agree, worthy rock isn't played on the radio or MTV nowadays. I don't think the whole genre is dead because it encompasses so many different types of music. It won't ever die.

Anteyeluci is good, though very much a Pennywise clone band at times.

Hot Water Music did a midwest tour with Less Than Jake (my personal fave band) and Bad Religion last year.

Speaking of LTJ: They're new album, "Anthem", comes out in the spring. Everything I've heard so far that is on it is excellent. And every interview I've seen with the band sounds like it will be a nice cross-section of everything they've done so far. From their ska beginnings to the power-pop laced with horns they're playing now.

I'm excited. It's been a long time I've been this excited for an album that is still 3 months away.

Well that's good when one's favorite punk band is pennywise. :)

A friend was having a party the other night at her house and she told me there was gonna be "three bands here including one of my friends bands Antilucy." So I was thinking these guys probably suck if they are playing someone's house party. Later on that night I came across their stuff on RockKansas.com and nope... I actually really liked them.

AnteyeLuci is from Basehor, KS by the way. All 4 guys are graduates from Basehor high school, which is like 5 miles from my house. I've got some friends at Basehor who know the band members through older siblings and stuff like that.
