Return of Eddie Lewis to the MLS?

    From SA MLS Confidential:

"U.S. World Cup team members Eddie Lewis, Frankie Hejduk and Joe-Max Moore have expressed interest in returning to MLS, and Earnie Stewart has broached the subject of a release from his Dutch club NAC Breda."

Eddie was one of our favorite players before he left. He could definately fill in a problem area with our attack (I.e. outside midfielders). Does anyone know whether the Quakes retain rights to him? I believe his contract was up and could go anywhere the league assigns him.

    EDDIE LEWIS!!!!

It would be a dream come true for him to come back to San Jose, but most likely if he came back to MLS he would be allocated to the Metrocrap or United.

PS - Eddie is still a traitor though :p

I would think the Quakes would have first priority at Eddie Lewis. (Help Noah?) If I am correct the allocations are no longer in effect, but if he were to return to the US the road would have to go through San Jose, and if they were shrewd they would try to get compensation for Lewis being assigned to any of the other teams.

As for Hejduk, since the Tampa Bay Mutiny no longer exists he is technically a "free agent" and could be free to sign with any team... had he stayed he would have been subjected to the Disperal Draft presuming he would have been still with the team...

QA if I remember his contract would have been terminated upon sale from the Quakes and the league to Fulham. However, I'm thinking he's a free agent, but his "rights" would have been retained by the Quakes.

(I don't recall of any player who has spent time abroad and returned to a different team... only Razov left Chicago for Spain, then returned back to the Fire...)

    Cheers!

I'll throw in a wild card... if Donovan leaves then if Lewis desires to return the Quakes would love nothing more than to get him back...

I'll go on the record and say I do not want Eddie Lewis back in San Jose.

Also add that the Quakes have changed dramatically in style and form since Lewis left. He really wouldn't fit in if he were to return. Either he would have to change his style, adjust, or he'll have a tougher time returning to San Jose.

Interesting to see how this will turn out though...

    Cheers!

If you go and look on the LA boards...(I know, I was trolling, but I never posted, just looked around) they talk about this rumor.....they say he may come here also. I think the 3 teams are Dallas, LA, and SJ that they mentioned him possbily coming to....I duno though.

"Dutch" Stewart has been rumored to come to the Galaxy for a while now. Supposedly he has a home on the West Coast so that's greater incentive to come here. However, I've always seen him as a Dutchman with a U.S. passport so I don't know if he'll do well here. If there's a team in need of leadership, such as DC United or the Metros, he would be a better fit there.

With Earnie's skills, I think he would fit well with any MLS team. it's just a matter of finding a place where he can settle down. What US city would he consider home? Wasn't he born and raised overseas?

IIRC, he's also got some family in the Texas (Dallas) area..........

Hejduk would be a VAST improvement over Ibsen/Conrad at right back, and having a Croat on the team would make Spejic happier.

Agreed that Hejduk should be the one to go after if any of these players became available. Barrett and Hedjuk as outside backs, Troy and Agoos in the center. That'd be the best defense in the league. Bar none.

Isn't Heydude Czech? I know the Cowboy was a Croat, and Medved.

I definitely agree that Hejduk would be the one to go after. He could fill out our right back/mid spot well, taking whatever spot was weaker.

I think Stewart would likely go to Dallas. He's got family from there and is a big Cowboys fan apparently, through his father. Someone of Stewarts would really get to choose where he goes.

Lewis would not fit in well. Trade him for a right back/mid.

'Hejduk' was a name for a count/duke/warlord-type of guy in the Balkans during the Ottoman period, I think. Or something like that. Plus the team from Split, Croatia is called Heyduk Split. Not to be confused with the Hejduk Spliff, which we will all become familiar with should the funky chicken roost in San Jose.

I'm not familiar with either the warlord or the spliff, but I am with Split's team. I have an away jersey.

I still think that Hejduk can also be claimed by those of Czech decent.

You're probably right. There is a Czech hockey player named Hejduk, right? Well, I guess if Frankie isn't a Croat after all we can't count on Spejic using his moderator pull to bring Frankie into the fold.

Medved can also be Russian. In fact, it usually is.

Hejduk means "highwayman", "brigand" or "robber". It comes from the Turkish language, and was brought over to Europe during the the time the Turks ruled south eastern Europe. You can find the name among many different nationalities, even as far north as Poland. I think it is pretty common in Hungary. There are many different spellings and derivations.

I'm already busy trying to get Zvonimir Boban to come out of retirement and play for us.

Why do people still cling to this pipe dream that Agoos and Dayak are going to play in the middle at 2001 form, and all of our defensive problems will be solved? Face it guys, Dayak is done. I like him as much as anyone else, but his body just can't handle the strain of a full season anymore. Agoos has already peaked, he's now on the slow decline towards retirement. We need to give Robinson experience in central defense. If we got Hedjuk though, that's great (although I still cling to my Graziani-Agoos for Reyes trade.)

Im sure its Hajduk Split, but thats close enough.

I like this rumour. Is it still just a rumour? I read somehwere that Eddie, Joe-Max and Earnie were all thinking about the move.

    Eddie Lewis --> San Jose.....

A high(ish) profile player, WC + EPL experience.

    Another USMNT member in MLS.

    Already played here.

    Five positives right there......

What did he do wrong? His previous tenure was before I followed like I do now.
