Its almost August and this summer window is shaping up to be a bust. We've brought in Hincapie (who was already here), a crappy 2nd/3rd string keeper, and a back-up LW for a position where we've known we needed a stud starter for a while. We just won the league. You'd think we'd be a highly desired destination.

You're panicking. It's world cup summer, and valuations are at record high. Chill.

I'm actually not a huge fan but I wouldn't say no. He's a good player, I just like others more. But wouldn't complain if we bought him. I know its the minority view and accept that others love him to death. Again, he'll be an asset and improve our squad and depth, I just wanted others more. No shade to him.

I would hope Konsa isn't needed if they get positive injury news on Saliba, White and Timber. For the latter two:

€330k a week at Atletico, supposedly. That's probably a bigger obstacle than the fee

Yeah. The problem is finding any value.

That's a lot of money for a mid player.

You usually don't get value when making win now signings: there aren't that many players that immediately make title winning sides better, and everyone knows who they are.

You get value by either: (1) discounting performance into the future (i.e., young players), or (2) finding traits that the market is currently undervaluing. If you're trying to win now, you can't spend a ton on prospects (unless you have unlimited money), and chances are the traits that you're looking for aren't undervalued* by the market.

*the exception is players with injury histories, but I'd say those players are properly valued: the price factors in the risk of unavailability.

On Morgan Rogers, here is what Michael Caley said on Bluesky:

"my Spurs fan opinion is that I can't believe Chelsea bailed arsenal out of their worst signing in years *again*"

I agree with this - the hard part is whether you can identify that player and get them at a realistic price. This is why I say its harmful to way over pay, because you are just loading on risk and potentially a bad deal that's hard to get out from underneath of. Fans tend to always default to financial prudence doesn't matter if this player will make us win the league - but the problem is no one knows that.

It's an illustration of the intense pressures on the margins in football transfers. Because Chelsea estimate his value to them as much higher than we estimate his value to us, you end up with a dumb number. And as you say, everyone already knows who the good players are, so eveyone wants the same players.

Actual alpha like Trossard is very hard to find. He was easily one of our best ever signings value wise.

Transfer Flow podcast is predicting shenanigans with the Rogers transfer: thinking is that Jackson will go the other way once the 45 day accounting period ends, which is apparently the very last day of the transfer window. If Jackson moves for an inflated fee, we know what happened.

i was discussing with a Chelsea friend today and they were pointing out how much money chelsea already raised in sales AND how much they already spent?

    All churn all the time?

Sadly, I don't think most clubs care about character and he'd easily go for 100M+ in the current climate. That said, I don't think Chel$ski wants to sell as he's likely a huge part of Alonso's rebuilding program to get them back into Europe, so he'd likely be over 120M if he's sold this window - a nice profit well above his purchase price and factoring amortization.

There are only ~10 clubs in the world who can pay the transfer fee Chel$ki expects and the wages Enzo desires, but many of them have huge needs in midfield he'd instantly address. 'Pool, Spuds, Yanited would be likely destinations in the Prem.

It'd be kinda funny if Yanited went for him: he would definitely fill a huge need for them, but a lot of their fans are angered that the Butcher got political with the Falklands banner after ARG beat England in the semis and would like him to be sold - only to acquire another ARG headache.

It'd be scary if PSG went for him.

Agreed. His numbers this season and last don't justify either the fee for him or his salary.

Felt like it wasn't that long ago the market was flooded with goalscoring wingers and now that we need one there isn't that many, but maybe it's also because our foggin' estandards have gone up so much that wingers I'd have settled for 3 years ago just aren't good enough for what we need now.

Also I've seen it said that we valued Rogers at 80mil and Chelsea came in and said take my money, AV asked us to match and we said "lol, lmao" and now he is off to Chelsea.
I actually think thats excellent from the club because this is how you end up overpaying for one target and missing out on an Ozil style opportunity deal because you lack funds.

I wouldn't assume the club's reaction was "lol, lmao" I think we were very unhappy abou tit. Number one target is number one target. No way to remix it. We lost out. We lost out for a valid reason but we lost out.

Its also the minority opinion that Rogers would not have improved us. Being the minority opinion doesn't mean its wrong. I was adamant we were better off with Sesko last summer. That was the minority opinion.

My bot is working over time. ;)
Why I would buy Yan Diomande over Barcola. First, Barcola is the much better player, by some distance. However....
    1. Diomande is 19, Barcola is 23. But AmreicanGunner, both are young and Barcola still has levels to go up. True. But 4 years is 4 years. I like the longer use of Diomande.

    2. Wages, Diomande will be cheaper both in wages and transfer amount.

    3. I don't trust Barcola to stay with us. If he lives up to our expectations, I can easily see him off to Real Madrid, Bayern, City. Not that Diomande wouldn't either but much less likely. For example, I think Barcola will expect a league title and/or CL trophy each season. Diomande won't

    3. I think Diomande is the more athletic and aggressive winger and more suited to the arduous league season.

I respect that Arsenal has a strict valuation for their targets. But if that means that they aren't going to get any of their targets, perhaps their valuations are not realistic?

Seeing claims that PSG have backed away from Diomande and are switching focus to Kroupi

Like Diomande more than Rogers and if rumors are accurate he would be cheaper. My biggest concern is a) Bundesliga to EPL transition isn't always smooth for attackers and b) while he plays both sides, he plays more on the right and the vast majority of his production is from the right.

I was thinking the same about Diamonde. He definitely impressed me in the WC when he played Hincapie and repeatedly beat him in that match - one of the best defenders in the Prem.

It looks like he primarily played on the left before he went to Leipzig a year ago. So it's particularly hard to know how well he'd do playing in the Prem and also on the left if he prefers the right.

Based off WC performances, I definitely prefer him over Yildiz, and he's likely much cheaper than Barcola, Doue, or Vini Jr.
