What is the "salaray" cap of an MLS team? Which players do and don't count towards that cap? What is the maximum wage a player makes? (real, excluding outside interference =)) What is the minimum wage a player can make? Guesses: What kind of salaray caps do teams have unofficiaily? How much do the top players REALLY make (not the fake league maximum)? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks. Phillip
That is one of the three most closely guarded secrets in the world, along with the recipe for Kentucky Fried Chicken and...well, the other one is a secret. P-40 players do not. Everyone else does. The max that counts against the salary cap is, I believe, $270K. There are certain players who make more than that (Landon, Etch, Cobi, El Pibe, Stoitchkov) but they count $270K toward the cap. Counting or not counting his winter job flipping burgers at McDonald's? There are some players making (reportedly) in the $25K range. Most are in the $40-$60K range. Probably around $1.25 Mil per team, more or less. That's another closely guarded secret. Nobody knows for sure. Nobody's telling. Certainly Landon makes more from Nike than he does from MLS. I'm sure it took some big bucks to get Hristo here, likewise for Matthaeus and Luis Hernandez. I think MLS is getting away from that, though. They've realized that developing young American talent is the way to go, and it's cheaper and more rewarding besides.
I think the salary cap is 1.7 but not sure, it seems to be a moving target. The minimum salary for a full roster player is $24,000 but a Developmental Player can be less than that figure.
Re: Re: Research on MLS Wages. This has been well-documented and is not a secret. $24K is the minimum.
I think the overall cap is $1.7-ish. The max is 270k, and the min is 24k. I've heard of some of the stars making around $1mil with outside stuff, like getting Nike or addidas to pick up some of the tab, or Lothar got some of the German TV revenue.
