That's 4/6 of a Friedman for those keeping score at home. What exactly will we know in September that we don't know now? What's "Plan B?" Why is the Army telling 35,000 troops to get ready? http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18542949/
I'm thinking Congress should pass a war funding bill that runs through September 30th. Anything for October 1 and onwards can go in the real budget. Let it affect the deficit number and all.
Summer has come and passed. The innocent can never last Wake me up, When September ends. Like my father's come to pass, seven years has gone so fast. Wake me up, When September ends. Here comes the rain again, Falling from the stars; Drenched in my pain again, Becoming who we are. As my memory rests, But never forgets what I lost. Wake me up, When September ends.
You may want to rethink the use of possessive there or else that line could take on a whole different meaning.
I think he's talking about his father's Septembers that have already "come to pass." As in: Like my father's Septembers that he's lived through in his life, mine are starting to pass by quickly. In other words, Billy Joe is telling us that he's getting old.
Ahh, I see. For a minute there I thought he was posing some sort of really strange question. Of course we also all know that rain falls from clouds, not stars. So really the whole song is just a bunch of horseshit. And yes, I'm kidding.
Iraq's government is closed for the next 2 months. They don't care about their country. Why should we, let's get out and leave during that time.
The question shouldn't be "why should we" it should be "why did we." To some extent, I agree with Colin Powell's Pottery Barn rule. We broke the shit out of that country. I am in favor of a major redeployment, but we still need a presence to do things like: secure the borders; be available for quick strikes to quell particularly bad violence; a major intelligence presence; a major diplomatic presence etc.
Interesting. On Countdown With Keith Olbermann they're reporting that 11 GOP congressman met with Bush in what amounted to an intervention. One congressman said that his constituents were prepared for defeat. Another said that the White House should let Petraeus give all the reports on Iraq to the American people because the administration has no credibility left. It will be interesting to see if anything comes from this. EDIT: Here's a link to an NBC report:
I always thought that song had a double meaning. First the literal meaning about his father and himself. The second was about America being mentally stuck in September 2001 and he has no patience for it. So rather than go along or fight or whatever, he decides to go to his happy spot until it is over. To me, that take seems to fit with the concept of the whole album. At least I hope that it has a double meaning. That would make the song great on a whole other level. It would be kinda like "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys which by the way you interpret it is either the sweetest or most depressing song ever written.
Why do our retired generals hate America? http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070509/ap_on_re_us/generals_iraq_ads "The fact is, the president has never listened to the soldiers on the ground effectively," said retired NATO Supreme Allied Commander Wesley Clark, who ran for president in 2004. "This administration is not listening to the troops and is not supporting them."
I think about the song the same way....and that was before i saw the video....i which i thought overdramatized things a bit considering the song is not that explicit.......but its point -which you are making..... was also clear imo...........
He uses them as props to give speeches. Can anyone recall an Iraq speech that wasn't given at a military installation?
Very, very haunting video, featuring Raleigh's own Evan Rachel Wood. She, Frankie Muniz, the blond chick on CSI Miami, and David from Six Feet Under are all from Raleigh or its suburbs. I'm using that video to indoctrinate my kids into being Democrats. They love Green Day, especially my son, and they're sort of haunted by the war. Every night, in our prayers, one or both prays that God take care of the soldiers in Iraq, or, more pointedly, ask God to help George Bush make better decisions.* It's sweet and depressing as hell at the same time. People from our church have been there. It's just not right for kids to have to deal with that UNNECESSARILY. *My dad really despises Bush, I mean HATES him. So when my son started picking up that language, I would say, now, we don't hate him, he's doing the best he can, we just wish he'd make better decisions. He's a good kid. And he's a big fan of the Ramones and the Foo Fighters too. He's 7.
I'm in favor of getting someone in charge who has a chance of being competent. Unfortunately for me, our system does not make that very easy. I hope we choose wisely in 2008.
Think I'm gonna have to queue up American Idiot on the iPod for the drive into work this morning. And crank it to as loud as I can stand it.
Agreed......on both songs. Just about every song on "Pet Sounds" is simultaneously hopeful yet depressing.
Hopefully this will get the votes needed for an override. I'm sure the moderate Reps in blue states are really getting agitated. http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/wireStory?id=3162096
From the article: Here's the vote. It lost 171-255, 2 Republicans in favor (including Ron Paul, well done) and 59 Democrats opposed (including Majority Leader Steny Hoyer).
