    Monday, August 30, 2004
    - Mayor Michael Bloomberg
    - Former Mayor Rudy Giuliani
    - Senator John McCain (R-AZ)

    Tuesday, August 31, 2004
    - First Lady Laura Bush
    - Secretary of Education Rod Paige
    - Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

    Wednesday, September 1, 2004
    - Mrs. Lynne Cheney
    - Vice President Dick Cheney
    - Senator Zell Miller (D-GA)

    Thursday, September 2, 2004
    - Governor George Pataki
    - President George W. Bush

I guess they are trying to avoid a repeat of the 1992 convention but when the most conservative speaker is a friggin' Democrat, I think they are purposely misrepresenting the heart & soul of their base.

The Dems are at least trotting out Clinton and Teddy to energize their base.

The Republicans also have the issue of not wanting the opening acts to upstage the headliner.

Can anyone think of another time that a member of the other party was a primetime speaker at a convention like Zell Miller?

No kidding... with all the fire-breathing rightists in the (R) ranks, you folks ought to do better than this.

McClintock had a great showing in the California debates -- would have made a wonderful speaker. (OK, a bit of SoCal homerism, but he did impress me, even though we disagree on just about everything save a vague sense of "fiscal responsibility). Tom Delay has done terrific things for your party (effect on the country notwithstanding). Hell, if the GOP wants to get more "woman-friendly", they could have put Kay Bailey Hutchinson up there.

My guess: the GOP is feeling some heat over the cynicism of a mid-September convention in New York, and doesn't want to come across too over-the-top.

He is an egotistical asshat. He earned the moniker "Zig Zag Zell" a long time ago and this is just his latest Zag. The stuff he's saying now is hilarious if you compare it to his speeches when he was stumping for Clinton in 92 and 96 and Gore in 2000. I'd have more respect for him if he just switched parties but he's too shrewd and knows that if he did that he'd be just another Republican and wouldn't be able to garner all the attention he's been receiving the last couple of years.

The good news is that he won't seek another term. The bad news is that the seat will almost certainly go to a real republican.

More than likely, yes, Johnny Isakson will finally win a statewide election after years of trying. The Congresswoman representing my district is running (Dennis Majette) but I don't give her much of a chance...even if she does win the Dem primary...which is not a sure bet in itself.

Pretty impressive list, but I never considered Bloomberg a Republican. He is a democrat who could not get on the democrat ticket so he became a republican.

They should have tried to get Koch to speak he is pro Bush even though he is a democrat.

What, no Judge Roy Moore? When so many pro-choice, pro-affirmative action people on the prime time speakers' list maybe it's time for the GOP core constituency to start looking a bit harder at the Constitution Party. That list has as much to do with the 2004 Republican Party as Frank Klopas has to do with today's USMNT.

Somebody resurrect this thread after the convention and see how close I come

The story will go like this:

NYC a great city in a great time and only getting better.
That was attacked! Like no other American city in more than a 100 years!
We are at war people! Remember that! I know what it takes to fight a war and I suport Bush!

GWB is a great guy and a great father that shares our values. I love him.
And he's left no child behind!
Like I wouldn't leave that kid behind in Kindergahten cop. And Cahlifornia should be Bush country.

Dick's a great guy. Really. No really.
I'm a great guy, really, and the VP job is a job greater than that other guy can do.
I didn't leave the Democratic party, the Democratic party left me when it stoped the Homeland Security Bill to satisfy the unions. I hate Democrats.

The country needs an executive that can pull all this together like I pull NY together.
I share your values. I have values. My values don't change. I will do all that I can to protect our values. Vote for me.

I agree, that is a milquetoast lineup. But, there's not many openings in prime time. You've got the Bushes and Cheneys, who have to speak. You've got the 2 mayors and governor of the convention hometown. You've got high profile speakers John McCain and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Then, you've got a powerful statement with a sitting Senator from the opposing party. The only slot left, is the token Rod Paige. It was either him or Condi or Powell, whattaya gonna do, he pulled the straw.

Nice to see that Paige has been rewarded for calling American teachers "terrorists." That slip seems to have done wonders for his career.
Paige is another in a long line of Bush folks who never should have been hired and desperately needs to be fired at the earliest opportunity. Houston miracle my ass.

You seem to have slipped up. Paige did not call American teachers terrorists, he called the NEA union leadership terrorists. And, he was right on.

Because of this statement, you've lost all your rights to make fun of Michael Moore. Ridiculous, over-blown rhetoric is counter-productive no matter which side it's on.

Yes, the teacher's unions are responsible for hundreds, if not thousands of deaths...

They threaten violence if there demands are not met...

Strict construction is not just for the Constitution...it's for us all

John Kerry has called Republicans in Congress "terrorists". You've lost all your rights to make fun of George Bush.

See that? You wrote "there" instead of "their". I blame your terrorist teachers.

I'm not accountable for what John Kerry says. I'm only accountable for what I said. And you are accountable for what you say. And I'm beginning to think that you and SockInTheNet are the same person.

    Or at least closely related.

I didn't slip up a damn thing, Skippy. I've forgotten more about education than you'll ever know. (I had a minor in cliche for example :) ) The NEA is the larger of the two teachers unions. It's also the one that usually goes out of its way NOT to strike. They were critical of NCLB because they know what they are talking about when it comes to education. Paige calling the NEA a terrorist organization is akin to calling America's teachers terrorists. Paige on the other hand, has a wonderful background of changing records in his "Houston experiment" so that it would look like the "Houston miracle." His actions are now the basis for NCLB. Regardless of the fact that it has come to light that his "success" in Houston was nothing but a fraud, Bushco pushes forward. Despite the fact that Paige's Houston plan has since been proven a complete disaster, he is chosen to be a key speaker at the Republican convention. This is typical of W and those who rabidly support him. They could not give two ********s about facts and reality. They can always re-write reality to their own purposes.

    Darn!

And I caught it before I read Ian's post.

I used to edit a newspaper.

    I am beside myself.

To think, I once believed in the cause of my terrorist teachers.

    Damn Catholics!

Sister-what's-that-private-school (Sacred Heart Elementary) betrayed me. The Vincentians (DePaul)...the Jesuits (LUC)...all of 'em...

    OK...

    ok...

I'm a recovering Catholic American with Irish relatives...

and Tommy Chong is on Leno or is it Conan...

    Oh well...

More evidence that test scores lie...

I think it is great how the Republicans are getting their true leaders in front of the people. Arnold has demonstrated solid, Republican values, in his ability to get and sustain an erection in front of other men. Leadership skills like that are hard to find.

And Paige makes up data, just like a good Bushie. The bigger the lie, the more likely people will believe it.
