In its place, Petrosky will be expanding the Five Minute Hate to last the whole weekend.

Where'd that one thread go... you know, the one about the left's intolerance of differing opinions?

Funny how the usual suspects on the right are avoiding this thread. I'm waiting to hear how they spin this one. My guess is they'll ignore Petrosky's stupidity entirely and try ad hominem attacks on Robbins to a degree but Sarandon especially.

Did anyone see Sarandon on the Daily Show a couple of nights ago? She was very good, well spoken, not overly political, etc...

It's very unfortunate, well, wrong, when politics mixes with sport in such a fashion. It happens far too often. Considering most of the American public probably didn't even know about the event, I doubt it would have been used as a political rally to espouse the anti-war views of Sarandon and Robbins anyway. Seems like they just wanted to celebrate the movie.

    5-minute hate indeed.

Not even a mention of Sarandon. I'm disappointed. At least there was the expected evasion of the topic.

This is obviously a foolish thing to do.

However, Robbins is basically performing a pot, kettle black dance with the following quote

"I am sorry that you have chosen to use baseball and your position at the Hall of Fame to make a political statement," Robbins wrote

If actors want to use their position to push their views, they should not be surprised when others do the same.

Both sides are idiotic here and for no one in this thread to recognize the hypocrisy of Robbins in this article speaks volumes to me.

Find. Other than Tim Robbins, who wants to spend an evening with that stackcrotch anyway.

    Is that good enough, Joey?

Besides, the sitation doesn't need to be debated because it is rediculous on every level. But Andy_B is right as far as the pot/kettle senario.

Well, Robbins was, as is his right as a citizen, expressing a political viewpoint. Petrosky, on the other hand, is using his position to PUNISH someone for their thoughts/expressions. That's a bit different than expressing a disagreement with Robbins/Sarandon.

    this is so much ************************.

Actors are citizens. So is Petroskey. Both have as much right to speak on an issue, regardless of their station in life, as any other citizen. There is no hypocrisy...except by us.

I don't even care about the organized use of their "station" to spout a message, on either "side," as long as it doesn't violate the Constitution. If the American people are foolish enough to give ACTORS' (or sports administrators') opinions any more sgnificance than their own, then the problem is not with the actors, its with the modes of learning that lead to a belief that an actor can, due to his/her "station," effectively talk about anything ever.

The question is, regardless of who it is or the circumstances, "Is the advocation of the truncation of free speech, and social punishment for using it, condemnable?"

    Certainly.

I'm pretty sure that it is common knowledge that Robbins leans left of center. He is an individual and accordingly, has his own viewpoint, which he may express to those who wish to listen.

The Hall of Fame, however, is an organization, non-political, representative of a sport. For them to take an stance on any issue outside of their realm of influence (baseball, its players, history, etc...) goes beyond the scope and mission of the organization.

Petrosky is free to believe and speak as he chooses, but to use the Baseball Hall of Fame as a vehicle for those views is a disservice to the game of baseball. It was a dumb move.

Robbins "wants to take a weekend off from war"??

Are there firefights outside his favorite spa in Beverly Hills?

And everybody who believes that either he or that harridan he's married to had the slightest intention to go through an entire weekend of public appearances without ever once mentioning their opposition to George Bush, please raise your hand.

Please. Be my guest. Be as morally outraged by this "Republican" guy cancelling them as you like.

Why is it you guys, who are supposed to be so "compassionate" and so "caring" about the downtrodden, oppressed and underpriveledged have yet to waste one single second being just a LITTLE happy for a couple million people who aren't living in fear of a sadistic facist today?

Can't spare a single minute of your precious moral outrage about the cancellation of 20 year old movie viewings to actually be glad for some fellow humans who are happy today?

If it helps, pretend that Bill Clinton is still President.

Ah, this was more what I expected, an attack on Robbins.

Robbins has the same right to say what he thinks as a private citizen as you or I do. The fact that media outlets give him more attention than they do to, say, you or me does not change that.

Also, he wasn't using a position at a non-political organization to cancel that organization's non-political event for partisan political reasons. It's one thing for Petrosky to speak his mind as a private person to criticize Robbins or even to use his position to ask Robbins to keep any comments during the event limited to baseball and to Bull Durham. But to cancel the whole event because he personally disagrees with two of the actors' political views is unspinnably stupid and immature.

I learned it from watching you, ok. I learned it from watching you, dad.

    BTW, Sarandon, Sarandon, Robbins, Sarandon.

But seriously, this is stupid. No point in doing this whatsoever.

Damn, Bill changed the quote in the 10 seconds it took me to read it and hit the quote button. Originally, he thought we couldn't "waste" a "second." Either that or I need to cut back on the booze at lunch.

And I had a great comeback to that. Oh well.

Someone already hit how Andy_B missed. Petrosky could (and should, IMO) have given an interview disagreeing with Robbins after the fact, if Robbins discussed the war.

"While I respect Robbins' right to speak his views, I wish he had left them until after the proceedings that are, after all, intended to celebrate a movie that celebrates baseball, and in turn, America.

Further, speaking for myself and not the Hall, I'm disturbed that this privileged member of our great nation would begrudge the brave Iraqi people their liberation." Yadda yadda yadda.

Instead, Petrosky went for the muzzle. I'll avoid the cheap shot of mentioning will to power and all that.

I don't know that anyone has belittled the wonderful liberation of the Iraqi people we have witnessed on the news over the past couple of days. That wasn't mentioned here and is off-topic. If you have something to say about this topic, say it, don't spin it.

    btw

    If you didn't know...

Prior to joining the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Petroskey was assistant secretary of public affairs at the U.S. Department of Transportation, serving as Secretary Elizabeth Dole's senior spokesperson. He served in the White House as assistant press secretary to President Ronald Reagan from April 1985 to March 1987 and was chief of staff to Representative William F. Goodling (R-PA), chairman of the House Committee of Education and the Workforce. He began his professional career as assistant press secretary for the Michigan House Republican caucus, which included Michigan governor John Engler.

Thank God Petrosky took this action, in order to preserve the safety and lives of our brave fighting men and women.

So, "support the troops" means "don't go see Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins movies"? But what about the movies that are - you know - for kids?

Don't dream it - be it

Tim Robbins used his position as an actor to punish moviegoers with that Martin Lawrence film he did a few years back. What comes around goes around.
