I love this signing. Can't wait to see what hairdo he comes up with in June. Why shouldn't AEG or any other corporation give a guy another chance??

Depends on how many years are left on his contract at the time, obviously. But he is OBVIOUSLY not a $10M player. Look at the guys who sell for that, and compare their resumes to Landon's.

I'm a Landon fan, and I defend him alot, but I'm in the reality based community on it.

    I didn't say he was worth $10M.

Xavier is 34, and has a history of drug and discipline problems... Nice one ALEXI.....

    I see incompetence breeds incompetence.

Ppl: the "drugs" were steroids. Cocaine was nothing more than a rumor.

Now. That doesn't mean I'm excited about getting a 34 year old defender left-over from a mid-table team, especially if he's a drama queen. But still... let's get the facts straight.

Lets wait to pass judgment on him after he has stepped onto the field. He has the technical skills and the experience to be a great player for the Galaxy.

That's not staying a lot about MLS since he was so obviously past it in the Prem last season.

Dichio, Robinson, and Welsh were no where near the premiership and they seem to have done just fine.

A 34 year old has been defender is not my idea of improving MLS.

If you consider being completely dominated, not scoring goals, and losing your first 4 matches to be doing "just fine". Lets see how they follow up the one good performance they have had before we crown them a success.

They haven't looked in any way out of place and have in fact played well. The teams performance doesn't rest on their shoulder alone obviously, just as they don't deserve a disproportionate amount of praise for the win.

Abel Xavier has been brought in because the club think he can do the job and I agree. It's a free transfer and as to his performance in the premiership the Galaxy will probably say different players prosper in different environments.

The reality of course is that the game is slower and you don't have a (insert player's name here) breathing down your neck.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble there, but it was clearly a handball. He stuck his hand out to stop the shot from going in at the near post, then fell on the ground as if it hit him in the face.

Dichio only played a game and a half, Robinson hasn't done much, and Welsh finally had a decent game against the Fire. I wouldn't call it 'doing just fine'.

They haven't at any stage looked out of their depth and have played well. Yes it's too early to judge them but early signs are good. If they put in performances consistantly like that I will continue to say "they're doing just fine."

Yallop says "people of his [Xavier's] quality are not often available for us to sign, so we're really happy..." and I'm inclined to believe him.

Well I wasn't stating my opinion, although I can see how it would come across that way. I was basically paraphrasing from what some other sites had on the handball situation that led to him being banned for 6 months for protesting the call, which was my main point to debunk a supposed ban for testing positive for coke. I have no bubble to burst as I don't really care for Portugal despite all of their talent.

Well if he still has the blond hair and beard, he will be quite a sight for the LA crowd. Hell, maybe you'll see youngsters sporting his hairdo.

The fact that your so ignorant to think hes the only guy in MLS who does coke or any type of drug for that matter is laughable. I would be willing to bet there are two or three guys a squad who party on the side once in a while.

Why don't you back off of Phil. Landon and David are going to be giving each other so much head during their stint here, what do you want AEG to do? get rid of Landon and David? Landon and David are also going to be doing some serious wife swapping which I dont blame them for doing. You going to stop them from playing soccer for that too? What they do in their personal life doesnt bother me nor phil as long as it doesnt interfere with the perception of the team or the league. See how it works?

Grow up son. Your going to need it in real life.

There definitely is a "fun character" element to it that I don't think is bad... but that's not really what MLS should be worrying about. Right now it's about improving the quality of the leauge. Is bringing in a washed 34 year old defender the way to do that? This is not like Beckham, who is still starring for one of the top teams in the world.... this is guy that got dropped from a mid to low table EPL club.

I don't think his previous coke problems are that big a deal. American sports fans are pretty forgiving as far as that stuff goes. I'm worried that he's old and isn't that good anymore.

Umm, you do realize that Xavier is not a DP, marquee signing, right?

The Galaxy have 4 central defenders on their roster (5 if you count Nate Sturgis). Only one, Tyrone Marshall, has significant MLS playing time. They desperately needed an experienced defender and that's exactly what they got. I have no idea if he'll pan out or not, but this is a signing that addresses a need on the team.

I'm all for them dumping a little bit o' the "family friendly" vibe.

We just need one more cokehead now: Robbie Fowler

He probably is the only coke head, no one else makes enough money to afford the habit.

I mean nothing screams coke head like a 22 year old making 12k a year.

Let's make sure they all get their raises so we can up the cocaine per player ratio to a more acceptable level.
