Except that we have about 4 of those, all young and healthy (Sturgis, Harme, Vagenas, Tudela)

You gotta love the fact that the Galaxy FO decided to officially sign a pimp for all of Beckham's women.

My understanding is that he has had two suspensions: one for coke use, another for anabolic steroids.

I've never heard of them aside from Vagenas and he sucks. Xavier is like ten times better than him.

If MLS made it known they'd him leave for $5M or under, and Landon definitely WANTED to go, he'd just about every club outside the very elite driving his and his agent's cell phone bill through the roof. His talent alone is worth that.

But I'm not gonna pay $10M for someone who looked that bad in the world cup.

HA! He'll be EASY prey for supporters section when the Galaxy hit the road. BTW the Pacific area has been a prime focus for drug-trafficking routes lately, not that it matters much.

Listen, I respect everyone’s opinions, however I have read a lot of posts in this thread that have been written by nothing more than haters and wannabe comedians. Some of you ridicule him as being an old has-been and others of you turn into D.A.R.E. officers and act like Xavier makes “Pacman” Jones look like a boy scout. All I know is this: my team is in dire need of help with our defense. If we continue with the players we have we are going to get scored on ever game. I am very happy to have Xavier join our team. He is a proven defender that has played at the highest levels of the sport. He not only comes to us from the EPL but he also comes with a great attitude and much respect for what we are trying to build here at the Galaxy and in the MLS.

"I'd like to thank Alexi Lalas, Frank Yallop and MLS for this opportunity," said Xavier. "Soccer is my life and I'm excited to continue my career in LA. Soccer in the United States continues to grow and I'm proud to be a part of it. I'm coming to win. With the great team and wonderful fans at the LA Galaxy everything is possible. I bring heart, hunger, desire and passion. This is me today, tomorrow, and always."

One of his coaching also contributed some great information regarding him as a person that makes me feel even better about the kind of man he is and what he is going to bring to the team on the field, in the locker room, and off the field. Take the time to read what someone that actually knows him has to say.

Your understanding is wrong. He had one for steroids and the other for going after the AR who called a hand ball on him that prevented a goal in the Euro 200 semi-final. Replays clearly showed that wasn't the case. Zidane buried the PK and France went on to the Finals. Xavier wasn't sent of for the "offense" or for berating the AR which kind of makes the suspension weak on the part of FIFA.

So once and for all he didn't get banned for coke, can we finally drop that.

Even at his age he'll be better than Marshall and Hardin.

Abel Xavier Joins Major League Soccer’s Los Angeles Galaxy

Portuguese defender Abel Xavier has reportedly scripted an 18-month contract with Major League Soccer outfit Los Angeles Galaxy.

The 34-year-old had earlier left Middlesbrough after failing to reach an agreement on a new deal.

Thanks for the honest and level headed comments. Considering that I am a Galaxy and Chelsea fan and that you are a DC United and Man United fan that means alot!

That's going on the assumption that all player transactions from his various teams goes through him. I think it's highly doubtful that is the case. That would also mean that any signings by the LA Kings and New Hampshire Monarchs are also approved by him. I'm guessing that this is a judgement call by the the LA GM and coaching staff.

Notwithstanding the factual dispute about who's a "cokehead," if Anschutz's conservatism included no provision for personal redemption, why would he have made a movie about "smackhead" Ray Charles?

I just can't believe this was kept quiet until the day it happened.

Maybe that's because Xavier represents himself and there wasn't any agent out there talking it up ahead of time.

Still better than most of the Americans who play his position. Since several teams don't use all their SIs, I welcome signings like this one.
