I originally posted this thread back in September in the Portugal boards. It didn't get much support. So I'm wondering what do MLS fans think about it. Here's the setup: 1. Replay could only be used to determine a call or non call made inside the penalty box. For example, a penalty call or a non penalty call, to determine if the ball crosses the goal line or not and so on. No replay for any calls made outside the penalty box, and no replay can be used for any offside calls. 2. Each team can contest a call by asking for a replay at anytime, but the team must have atleast one subsitution left (meaning if a team has used up all 3 subs, they cannot ask for a replay). 3. Each team is given only ONE replay request per game. When a team asks for a replay, the referee will review it, if the referee's original call stands, the team who asked for the replay looses one sub, if the original call is changed, the team does not loose the sub. 4. The referee has 60 seconds to review the play, the time will then be added to the stoppage time at the end of the half. There's probably alot more things that has to be added to this, so feel free to add to it. I know it's outthere and unlikely to happen, but I think it would take some unneeded controversy out of some games.
Unless the Ref has a mini-camera on his wrist, there's no way to settle the issue in 60 seconds. Perhaps the 4th ref could make the call...
NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... NO... OK, I guess the fans wont like it. (But it could of helped the ref make the right call last summer in the game between the United States and Germany.)
I think that they could use it for disputes over the ball crossing the goalline or not. Other than that, it would be difficult to implement.
Or the ref could've wasted time by calling for a video replay and then decided that he saw the play correctly the first time, and that the player didn't deliberately handle the ball. Watching it over and over isn't necessarily going to make judgment calls any more accurate or palatable.
If you're looking to resolve goal disputes, like if the ball does or does not go over the line, I think a goal judge a la hockey is a better solution than breaking up the flow of the game. This was an idea Platini or somone suggested shortly after this past WC.
i'm gonna bet your an american football fan too...lol it sounds like an idear at first but ummm...not for soccer. don't bring rules from other sports into this one... next idea would be the 3-in-the-key rule, or should i say the 3-in-the-6-yard-box. i did hear about this happing but online for the goaline. that might or might not be good. it would be interesting to see how they go about this. personally... i like screaming at the ref for non-calls... what can i say? ITS FUN!!!... plus, it really takes the fun out of the game when you try to make everything exact like in american football. homan error is what makes it interesting. it makes each game a little differen't from the next.
What about games that aren't televised or video taped? That would mean MLS games would be run by different rules than some minor league games. I say, only use the tape to evaluate the refs performance or to fine a player. If a coach doesn't like a call, he/she can always submit a formal complaint after the game.
> I do but it's a part of the game. If you are yelling, then you think something is wrong. Unless you like being upset. In which case, the quality of the refing does not matter, does it?
