Rename the uefa champions league THE EUROPEAN CUP! Why many of the teams/clubs when competing in the competition are European but not champions of anything when they are competing in the tournament/competition. thus it is not a champions league but a European Cup (instead).
Of the six continental federations, all of them except from CONMEBOL, have a Champions' League competition with that name that follows the description above, and actually have almost the same format as the UEFA competition. It's kinda the blueprint for a top level continental championship. Why the name? Because it is the competition that determines the strongest club out of the entire continental football federation. It determines that continent's 'Undisputed Champion'. It's also a more prestigious 'brand' than European Cup, and branding has become an increasingly important aspect of the modern game. CONCACAF did decide to move slightly away from the uniform brand, but it wasn't the word Champions that was seen to be an issue. For those reasons, my vote will be No. On the flip side, I will say that European Cup has a kind of nostalgic charm.
The tournament is a. A champions and non champions competition. B. Format: Mixed league and knockout. So the competition to give it the ideal name that ideally describes what it is call it the champions and non champions league cup.
I fully agree with you that most of the Champions League participants are not champions. But, regardless of the competition name, would you rather reduce the current UCL to let's say 16 champions of the top 16 countries in UEFA association club rankings? Meaning: • Fewer matches per season • Fewer big matches • Fewer close matches • Fewer stars from non-champions clubs get to shine on the biggest stage • etc. Here are the current top 16 associations according to UEFA rankings for your reference: 1-4: England, Italy, Spain, Germany 5-8: France, Netherlands, Portugal, Belgium 9-12: Turkey, Czech Republic, Israel, Norway 13-16: Austria, Greece, Switzerland, Denmark
