Well, unfortunately we are now into the off-season at DC United. As a board, this generally means we don't have as much to talk about concerning the team. However, keep the following in mind before posting an off-topic thread.

    1) First and foremost, this board is about all things DC United. Please try to relate any threads to DC United, there are other boards for other topics. While they may not be as enjoyable, those are the locations for off-topic threads.

    2) If you feel the need to post an off-topic thread, please think about it before you post. Standard off-topic threads that are ok - threads about ex-DC players, threads about up coming matches in the DC area, threads about buying moderators beer ( ;) ), and threads relating to breaking news of a public safety nature.

    3) If your off-topic thread does not fall into the above catagories, PM or e-mail any of the moderators to find out if it would be appropriate. We are not dictators (at least the other mods aren't) and are open to your reasons for posting an off-topic thread.

    4) Use common sense. If you want to talk about another MLS team, there are team boards to have those discussions. If you want to talk about the geo-political ramifications of a war against Bhutan, go to the politics board.

That's all I have to say. I welcome comments from posters and mods about the above "policy".

I'd like to start a thread about the moderators buying me beer.

Definitely off topic and worthy of the recycle bin and/or a red card... :)

Are you sure? Your posts aren't that bad. Maybe a yellow, but I don't know about redcarding you.

I fail to see what this thread has to do with DC United the soccer team.

    Why not bomb Bhutan? :)

--Better yet get bombed IN Bhutan...

--are threads on field repairing keg taps a legit thread? :)

This would be a legitimate thread if:

    1) the field repair was related to a DC United tailgate in the past, present, or future.

    2) the field repair was intended to make sure that the DC Board Moderators had beer. :D

Back on topic, yes, we've engaged in a bit of banter in this thread. I would like to remind people that we are serious about off topic threads. If some of the rumors pan out there will be plenty to talk about concerning DC United during the off season. There are at least 2 up coming games this month and then a whole slew of "training" abroad and other activity for our players. Not only that but as Lowecifer astutely pointed out there has not been a serious discussion about stars, logos, nicknames, or logos in months... Enjoy folks and I'll see you all at happy hour!

I read the stern warning in the thread about the Metros...

I understand how it is off topic of DC, but is it not appropriate for us to have a thread about the internal problems of our mortal enemies?

Personally, I'd much rather discuss the metrodonkey's problems amongst fellow DC fans then having to deal with all the random people on other boards.

I think infernal is a more appropriate word! ;) (as in "about the infernal problems...")

    You must be a diplomat.

Personally, I'd much rather discuss the metrodonkey's problems amongst fellow DC fans than having to deal with all the lunatics on their boards! :D

ps-Would a thread on "What type of beer to buy the DC United moderators?" be appropriate? Come to think of it could "How much beer to buy the DC United moderators?" be appropriate?

I agree -- it seems extremely on-topic to talk about goings-on at other clubs through the filter of how they affect us or how we view them as sworn enemies. It's a much different conversation than could be had on the Metrowank boards.

My take on discussion about our rivals is that unless related to DC United, it should not be on these boards. Now, if the discussion centers around "how do the changes in the Metroscum affect DC's chances for next season, then it is appropriate. However, the thread in question had none of that when I posted the off topic warning. It was all about the internal decisions and ramifications for the Metroscum, which is off topic for these boards.

I understand that the DC boards are more comfortable for a discussion such as this than visiting another board. However, that is in no small part due to the fact that we keep things on topic about DC United. If threads about the US National team or other club teams become more common, then posters from other boards will come here and join these discussions. Then this board becomes just like the other boards.

I appreciate the feedback and this is something that I will bring up with the other moderators. Please feel free to PM or e-mail me or the other moderators about your concerns.

The thing that's confusing though is do we want a rivalry w/the Metros or not

If so, how do we create a rivalry if we can't talk about the Metros

Even the mods talk about the Metros all the time

And even MLS headquarters is trying to create rivalries w/things like the Atlantic Cup

So many posts on this board have been about the Metros

It's like Redskins fans being unable to talk about how they hate Dallas

I know I'm confused about this I'm guessing others are as well....

Just make it clear I guess and then we can all follow the rules more easily

The mods are doing a great job, just a little feedback here...

Just a sidenote to BudWisers post; I find that often we'll be discussing an issue that may refer to the Metro's and one of their posters comes over, takes issue with what is being said and incites some namecalling, smack...etc. This happened in a recent thread on Diallo. Will the mods automatically banish that thread to the Rivalries forum, or just censor/delete the offending party? I thought we had a pretty good conversation going until that happened.

I think we'll just have to use our best judgment about what's on and what's off topic here during the off season.

But I do agree with revelation that the DC United board is not the FFA.

As for the MetroStars - my opinion is that threads about the Scum that have bearing on DC United (in a wide variety of ways) are probably on topic. Again, it's gonna boil down to a judgment call.

I'd just ask that if some topics do become a bit too much smack talking that they are moved to rivalries rather than being closed altogether.

I love to piss off Metro fans (I'm sure alot of others will concur) . The angrier they are at us, then it means we're doing our job right. Rather than have those threads closed, please send it to Rivalries, or better yet if you are going to close it, send it to the Metro board so it can sit there and taunt them and they can't reply.
