Mathis' fitness was a topic of discussion and so many on these boards roundly criticized Arena?

I think the main criticism was questioning the need to make PUBLIC statements about Mathis' fitness. Sure it's motivating, but so is a sledgehammer to the head. You're motivated to get out of the way, but then you want to kill your attacker.

he is still an enigma. He might be the most frustrating player in the Player Pool. So ridiculusly talented...yet he doesn't show up for 80 minutes of a game...I wish he would make up his mind on whether he sucks or not

A good coach knows his players and what will motivate them. Some players need the sledgehammer and some need the feather.

As one coach once said in talking about a player in another sport " She needs to work harder and not hide behind these nicks and bruises" and Mr. Glenn responded whole heartedly
