I am new to following soccer. I was wondering how does relegation work? Who gets sent down and who gets called up?

    Thanks

Someone smarter than me will come along and explain it better than me so no worries on that one.

We really ought to sticky one of these relegation explanations threads.

    its different in some places

in england if not mistaken, the one in first place in the first division gets sent up, the others get to play playoffs (only 3 from first division advance) to the epl, the last 3 of the epl get relegated.

    i could be wrong

    Hang on...

You've posted a similar thread a bit ago.

    Which I replied to.
The information in that still applies to this thread.

If that's not what you want, or you can't understand, then say something and clarity will reign again.
What do you want to know?

And incidentally (lond), it's the top 2 clubs of Division 1 that automatically get promoted, the 3rd spot is decided by a playoff between the clubs that finished in 3rd - 6th position. (3rd v 6th; 4th v 5th; then final)

In the premiership it's the bottom three. In the serie a it's the bottom 4. It differs.....

    In England:

    Premiership:

Bottom 3 teams relegated to Division One.

    Division One:

Top 2 teams automatically promoted to the Premiership.

Teams finishing 3, 4, 5, 6 entered into a playoff. 3 vs 6 and 4 vs 5 play home and away, with the winners meeting each other in a single match. Winner of that match (the Playoff Final) is also promoted. Thus can, in theory, the 6th place finisher win promotion.

Bottom 3 teams automatically relegated to Division Two.

    Division Two.

Promotion is exactly the same as for Division One (above). Top two up automatically, 3, 4, 5, 6 entered into playoff.

    Bottom four teams automatically relegated.

    Division Three.

Top three team automatically promoted. 4, 5, 6, 7 enter in a playoff in the same format as other divisions.

Historically, the bottom team in Division Three is relegated out of the Football League and into the GM Vauxhall Conference. Starting this year (I think, but it maybe next year if not) this number is being increased to two.

    GM Vauxhall Conference

Champions are promoted to Divsion Three. As I understand it, the second promotion place will go to a playoff winner from amongst the teams finishing 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Beneath the Conference, there is promotion and relegation from any number of feeder leagues. The Rymans League, Dr Martens League, etc. feed into the Conference itself, and leagues like the Combined Counties League feed into those leagues. I think there are something like twelve divisions between the very bottom of the pyramid and the Premiership. The last team, before you ask, to "do it", were Milton Keynes. Ooops.
