The proof that is often given with this "biological imperative" is that among primates where the female members of the group do not become menopausal (for instance chimpanzees), males tend to covet older females in the group, especially those who have already produced offspring (called multiparous members of the community). Because they have proven to be fertile and have experience raising children. Apart from some isolated communities where it has also been observed, humans are actually the only primate species with menopause, so one might wonder if human men would also covet older women if human women did not go through menopause, like our fellow primate species. All our female sex symbols would likely be of the MILF variety.
Yeah I know, that is why I mentioned the exceptions in isolated communities. I have not seen those findings applied to chimpanzees as a species.
I anticipate it is widespread in chimps and not just in that isolated community. It's probably more a limitation of the research that has been done so far.
