    Award took me by surprise

My knee injury is healing nicely and fingers crossed, I'm still on schedule to be fit for Ireland's two Euro 2004 qualifiers against Albania and Georgia next month. I did have to have an anti-inflammatory injection on Wednesday to help the healing process but I'm optimistic I'll be back in action within three or four weeks.

I've been going into training at Millwall five days a week to work on my rehabilitation and I hope to start stepping up my workload in the next few days. I'd say I'm still only 50-50 for the Ireland training camp on May 20, which is the only chance I'll get to prove my fitness to Brian Kerr, but I feel things are on target.

I spoke to Brian at the FAI awards on Sunday and he told me to keep in touch, and to let him know how my fitness was coming along. It was good to talk to him again. He gave me a few words of encouragement and it was good to know I was still in his thoughts in terms of selection. You can be out on a limb a little when you're injured and our chat made me feel a part of things again.

Id like to feel I've done well when I've played for Ireland but my domestic season has been plagued by injuries.

It was a good evening on Sunday for me personally because I was named the FAI Young Player of the Year. I was up against Clinton Morrison and Colin Healy and I've got to say I was more than a little surprised when they announced my name.

I'd like to feel I've done well when I've played for Ireland but my domestic season has been plagued by injuries and I really thought it would be Clinton or Colin collecting the award. It did cheer me up, though, and it was a good night all round.

Lions boss plays down Reid's Rovers link

Mark McGhee has denied reports linking Millwall playmaker Steven Reid with a big-money move to Blackburn.

McGhee admitted, however, that Millwall are vulnerable to the Premiership vultures.

Blackburn boss Graham Souness was linked with a move for Reid, this week named Young Player of the Year by the Republic of Ireland.

But McGhee said: "We've not had an official approach for Reid but like all Nationwide clubs we would have to listen to offers for any of our players."

The Lions boss must sell before he can buy this summer and released Christophe Kinet and Daniel Severino this week.

He is still waiting to hear whether Steve Claridge will sign a new contract.
