http://www.lequipe.com/Football/20030526_123452Dev.html Released with the club being relegated to France's D2.
To no one's surprise. MLS must be the next stop for him, but where? Colorado could use any veteran footballer with a pulse.
Regis really isn't an American, his wife is an American, so I think he will try to stay in Europe. However, Earnie Stewart is from Holland and he came to America so maybe Regis will too. However, I think Regis will try to land a job on a European club before he looks at the MLS as an option.
But Stewart is more or less an American. Dad was American, lived here for a little while as a kid. Regis just married some American reporter and signed up. However one bonus for Regis playing in MLS over other Europeans is that a team doesn't have to burn an international slot on him.
So why didn't he? Seriously, I wonder if he still has family/ties to Martinique? After over a dozen years in the Champ and Bund, with a few Uefa and Cup games under his belt, he could probably afford a nice piece of Caribbean beach and kick it around for Joe Public or someone like that. Then again, I think there are good flights from DC, NYC and Dallas and that long winter break is pretty attractive.
\ That's hilarious. He'll be class in MLS. Pope is the only guy I can think of who is a better defender.
Money, I think. Not likely that an MLS club would pay him more than he was getting in the French first division.
Of course, when I typed "why didn't he?" I was trying to be funny - as in the end of his career was last year, when Metz went down and he got benched in favor of a frisbee dog at the WC. But seriously, Regis, while getting long in the tooth and despite an unfortunate habit of going down a bit too easy in the defensive third, was still a decent defender as of the the Hex (last time I saw much of him) and would be able to help a couple of MLS teams. But he's no game changer either. The best years of his career (Lens, Metz '99) are long behind him.
I think he would be somewhere in between the two opinions stated in here. He will not be the second best defender in MLS but he sure could start ahead of some of those mannequins that the Rapids had out there last night.
One of the great eccentricities of BS is that opinions tend to be extreme. A couple of bad moments and a quality player is crap in the BS world. Truth is, for the most part, Regis was quite good, and at times exceptional in the Hex, especially early on. He had a bad match against Honduras (though his pokey inside defensive partner made him look much worse than he was that day), and went down too easily once on an other occasion. Hardly credentials for someone "not good enough for MLS." Name more than one defender in MLS apart fom Pope who has better ball skills, experience, and vision. Bocanegra? Nope. Garcia? Nope. Jim Curtin or Joey Franchino? Bwahahaha!
I remember Regis stating he would like to come over here as well. This may be his opportunity. Colorado could certainly use him. Maybe it will force him to learn English too...
ok, let's put this to the test.Pope makes MLS max.We will see which, if any, MLS teams will pay at or near max for him. My guess is zero teams. But this experiment may get done and then we will see.
ps- I am a Rev fan and I would not trade any of the top 5 Rev defenders for him: Heaps,Kante,Pierce,Llamosa,Franchino.
If you honestly aren't sure Regis is good enough to play in MLS than Revs fans can be grateful you aren't making trades for them.
Well, you sure have a sense of humor, I'll say that. None of those guys are anywhere close to the class of Regis. Never will, either.
There's no question Regis' best years are behind him. He can help an MLS club solely because of his experience and professionalism. He's not going to be an outstanding player. Given the right defensive scheme he can be effective but keep him away from dangerous one-on-one situations. Don't know about the salary issue. Can he make more in Europe D2 than in MLS?
Anyone who is good enough to play for the US national team would be a stand out in MLS. It's pure ignorance to think otherwise. Well said to the person who pointed out the complete overreactions from some bigsoccer posters.
*lol* I've heard of being a homer but c'mon. If what you say is true then why is it that only Llamosa has seen any significant action for the USNT?
Pure ignorance to think otherwise? Vanney-wasn't an MLS standout. Stewart-not a MLS standout (at least not yet, by any stretch of the imagination). Ben Olson-not an MLS standout (at least not recently). Doesn't seem ignorant to me to take a wait and see approach. Stewart has hardly done crap this season.
