The first matchday 2004 was scheduled, but all games with YA participation were cancelled except one: Siegen suffered a heavy 1:5 loss against fellow strugglers Schweinfurt. Lukin started as left back, but was ejected (yellow-red) in the 65th minute when the score was 0:3. van Buskirk entered the pitch in the 57th (at 0:2) and scored his 8th goal of the season in the 69th (1:3). Siegen dropped to the second but last position with 3 points to rank 14.

There is a second game with YA participation scheduled for today: Hamburger SV Reserves face Eintracht Braunschweig. Kicker neither expects Hamburg’s new Yank Ian Joy nor Braunschweig’s Jacob Thomas in the starting lineup. I’m sure Alex_K will inform you about this game.

    Of course ;).

Well, they also have an injured player in their line-up. If the coach wants offensive play, i'd predict that Thomas will start and one of the midfielders will go into the defence.

The game starts at 19:30 CET, btw.

The German language has not enough words for feces. A few more would make my weekly rambling about the last Eintracht game a bit more interesting. I counted six words. But maybe i forgot one. Still not enough.

At least i got the line-up right. Kicker should hire me. We lost, btw. 0:1. Plus Eintracht missed a pk. Six words for feces are simply not enough. And some of them aren't even cool enough to use them if you are older than 6. Thomas started and played the full 90 minutes. Of course Hamburg played with a few pros. Fukal and Cardoso, for example. DFB sucks. But who cares ? Ian Joy played too-full 90. We had 2:8 chances. And that according to the official website. And those guys aren't exactly what i would call critical. Damn, doo we suck.

Joy and Thomas had a little clash right at the beginning of the match as it seems. Joy stopped Thomas with a little check and an argument started... Given Eintracht's live ticker, Thomas' best scene was a combination that led to one of the two Braunschweig chances. Joy had two good chances, but both were saved by the keeper; he also picked up a yellow in his Germany debut. With the win Hamburg left the relegation spots, but the standing is very uneven due to the numerous cancelled games.

After the game Eintracht Braunschweig's coach Uwe Reinders was fired. I think he is a nice guy, so i feel a bit sorry for him, but i guess the club had to react. There wasn't a single good game in the last months. If the club would finish on the current position (9) that would be the worst season in the entire 109 years history of the club.
Accordding to a newspaper one of the candidates for his succession is Cory Gibb's former coach at St. Pauli, Dietmar Demuth btw.

    Weekend roundup:

    NORTH

Thomas played full 90 as right mid in another disappointing 1-1 of Braunschweig vs Kiel. They now are 9th ranked between good and evil. Pellegrino Matarazzo has a knee injury, that’s why he didn’t play for Münster when they gave up a 2-0 lead and just kept one point vs top team Dresden. They climbed one rank to 16, one point down in the relegation zone. Ian Joy was left back for Hamburg reserves in their 3:2 win over fellow strugglers Wattenscheid – a game, in which they almost wasted a 3-0 lead. Hamburg climbed to 12 with some points now to the relegation ranks.

    SOUTH

Siegen had another week off due to a cancelled game. Cummins didn’t have playing time at VfR Aalen’s 3:3 at top seed Bayern Munich reserves. Lawson, Gibson and Mason all went full 90 in Elversberg’s first home loss of the season, a 1-4 against Stuttgart’s reserves. Mason scored Elversberg’s 1-3 with four minutes left to play. They now dropped to 6, 2 points away from promotion

It wasn't exactly Thomas best game. He had no real chance. The press was very critical towards him in the match reports.
A new coach isn't found yet.

Eintracht Braunschweig lost their game in Essen 0:1. Thomas, after his weak game last week, did not start. He came in in the 55th minute. The positive news is that it seems as if it was a much better game than the previous few. Also a new coach was found, the rather unknown Michael Krüger.

Eintracht Braunschweig finally won a match again, 1:0 at home against Chemnitz. This was the first win for us since November (there was the winter break between, but still...). Thomas, who isn't in his best form at the moment, started on the bench again and came in in the 67th minute, while it was 1:0 already. He couldn't do much anymore, as Eintracht played quite defensive at the end.

    Sorry, forgot about that.

    From last weekend:

Thomas - 35 minutes as substitute, 0:1 loss at Essen
Matarazzo - DNP, knee injury, 0:0 draw at Leipzig
Joy - 33 minutes as substitute, 1:0 win over St Pauli
Cummins - DNP, 2:0 win over Siegen
    Lukin - DNP
van Buskirk - 20 minutes as substitute, 0:2 at Aalen
    Payne - DNP
    Lawson - full 90
Gibson - full 90, one of the best players on his team
Mason - full 90, 0:2 loss at Mainz Reserves

    This weekend:

Matarazzo - 7 minutes comeback to secure a 1:1 draw vs top seed Wuppertal. Münster is second but last being 5 pts down.

Thomas - 23 minutes as substitutes, 1:0 win over Chemnitz. Braunschweig is beyond good and evil on rank 8.

Joy - full 90 as left mid, 1:1 draw at Dresden. Hamburg is on rank 9.

Payne DNP/Lawson full 90 as central defender/Gibson full 90 as central mid/Mason full 90 as right wing - 0:1 home loss vs Wehen. Gibson picked up his fifth yellow and is suspended for today's postponed game at Pfullendorf. Elversberg is still waiting for the first win 2004 and dropped to 10 meanwhile.

Cummins DNP, 0:2 loss at Stuttgarter Kickers, Aalen is 6th

van Buskirk full 90, Lukin DNP - van Buskirk's equaliser was on the rebound after the goalie first saved his pk. Siegen is five points down in the relegation zone. Lukin was taken off the matchday roster due to recent bad performances.

Mason went 90 and scored the only goal in a 1-1 draw with Pfullendorf. All other YAs DNP.

    A couple of questions:

When a BL2 team is relegated, which league are they relegated to?

How many reginalliga teams go up from each league?

BL2 teams are relegated to Regionalliga North or South depending on their local association. Two Regionalliga clubs promote from North and South each, but note that pro club reserves are not allowed to go up.

What happens if the four that go down (I assume by the above it's four) all have North local association?

Good question. If three go down to the same Regionalliga, then they'll play with 19 teams in the next season and the other Regionalliga (that just has to take one of the 2.Bundesliga clubs) cuts the number of relegating teams to three. Don't know what happens if four go down - maybe they play with 20 or they increase the number of relegating teams to five. In leagues below Regionalliga it is common that the number of relegating teams is determined by the number of teams coming down to this league.

It is the first option, they will play with 20 teams (and 6 teams would be relegated the next season). It was different before the number of leagues was reduced (iirc once six or seven out of 18 teams were relegated in the old RL Nord), but the rule was changed recently.

    Weekend roundup:

    NORTH

Thomas played the last 30 minutes in Braunschweig’s 1:2 road loss at Paderborn; he entered the pitch at 1:1 and was playing when Paderborn used their second pk minutes before the end of the game to win the match.

Matarazzo returned to Münster’s starting lineup after his knee injury. He played full 90 in a bad game that ended 1:2 at Cologne’s Reserves due to a game winner in the 93rd - a result that keeps Münster 6 pts down in the relegation zone.

Joy’s Hamburg Reserves play against top team Wuppertal tomorrow.

    SOUTH

Cummins finally had some playing time, but only eight minutes at Aalen’s 0:3 home loss against the worst team of the league, Kaiserslautern Reserves. He came in at 0:2 when Aalen tried everything to collect a point, but it was in vain. Aalen is four points away from promotion and five from relegation.

Mason was Elversberg’s only playing Yank at a respectable 0:0 road draw at Erfurt. The team is ranked 10, one point behind Aalen.

At least van Buskirk gained honors on this matchday. He scored his 10th goal of the season, the game deciding 3:1 at a 5:1 win of Siegen vs. Feucht (72nd) and was substituted eight minutes later. Siegen cut the distance to rank 14 to 3 points. Van Buskirk entered the Team of the Day for the second time of the season and was named Player of the Matchday. The text:

Cool, but thankfully he accepted the congratulations from the coaching bench and the applause from the stands after his substitution: forward John van Buskirk, who turns 32 on April 13 and plays in Siegen since 1999/2000, is experiencing his third spring right now. The US boy scored his 10th goal of the season with the important 3:1 lead. “It’s working again. That way we will stay in. But we got to continue like that”, said the attacker, who played his 150th Regionalliga game, and already thought about the next difficult game at Stuttgarter Kickers. Words that are appreciated by the Coach.

I remember when van Buskirk played in the USL - I think Lexington or Louisville, he came to New Orleans and scored a late game-winner.

Quite unlucky, but it seems as if the game was a step into the right direction. Judging from the match reports Thomas had two good scenes in his time on the field, one dangerous shoot on goal and one assist to a chance.

Great to see Ian Joy has found a place to play. I still remember the look on his face at MLS Combine 2003 when he learned there were questions about his medical. I know he ended up going into camp with Columbus but didn't stick, and I would see his name linked with trials at various clubs, but sounds like HSV reserves start him every game.

Also glad to see Grover Gibson doing well. Do you think he'll ever play in the Bundesliga?

Not much to report about Thomas today:

Eintracht Braunschweig - Schalke Am. 2:2, Thomas sat on the bench and did not play for the first time this season. Again Eintracht got a late goal against.
