“Untruths” is a broader category that includes when the person is too ignorant to know whether or not they’re lying (and doesn’t care either way), and that fits Trump in most cases.
That untruth becomes a lie when the liar says it after being corrected, tho. It's a broader category, sure (official?), but it's mainly a hedge against more severe retaliation from the subject of the accusation.
Mostly it’s a weird tic of journalists and journalism, but the main idea is that you can’t call it a lie because unless you can read Trump’s mind, he might just be colossally ignorant, rather than lying. It’s a journalistic convention that had a purpose in the Before Times, when our politicians acknowledged the concepts of truth and lies. Nowadays at the federal level, it is GOP orthodoxy to reject those concepts. Thom Tillis was a real partisan bastard when he was a leader in our legislature. He broke norms. I was going to write a longer paragraph, but I will just leave it at: Telling other people they are lesser than because of the color of their skin is not a debate. Telling people they are lesser than because of who they love is not a debate. Telling people they are lesser than because of their gender is not a debate. Given how often she is discussed or talked about in these threads, I cannot understand how you would still have no idea who she is. She's basically mentioned on a daily basis, and often multiple times a day. For examples, she's the one who wore a "Censored" mask while speaking in Congress, heckled Biden during his State of the Union speech, was Tweedle Dee to Boebert's Tweedle Dum, etc.
