Neil and co are an example of the downside of the Good Chaps theory of government. For instance in relation to Brexit, many of them reasonably believed that the Rolls Royce foreign service would simply kick in to gear and negotiate a great outcome. But that didn't happen because clowns like Boris and zealots like Classic Dom were poisoning the well for much more insane ideas. So then they all ended up supporting Boris, who only 5 minutes ago, they all hated and knew should be nowhere near No 10. I think it was hard for these establishment types to imagine that they would end up destroying the Tory party. Same thing has happened in the US.
I think the way it's described there slightly misses the point in terms of economic issues. It isn't that the EU, (and the rest of Europe, including the UK), will 'weaponise' their market and lending... it's just a matter of not wanting to lend money to someone who's a complete fecking lunatic because they might not pay you back. What was the point of the EU-US trade 'deal' if they simply say, 'Nah, we've changed our mind', a few months later?
To buy time. Remember Shotgun Uschi threw in 2 gold plated unicorns and eleventy zillion dollar investment deals funded by nothing.
A gravity bomb would be useless against the US, even if Europe had bombers with the range to reach the US, which they don't. Since 9/11 the US has updated its air self-defense forces and even a maximum effort of Russia's on-paper bomber force would not get through. Those are all retired and not coming back. The only real deterrent nuclear force against the US would be some form of missile launched from submarines.
This is a joke. It is one of those "I don't truly regret the harm I've done and I think I've done nothing wrong, but I kinda have to say sorry because society demands it". I am a strong believer in the idea that people can change their ways and have their "Paul on the road of Damascus" moment. But that has to start with genuinely acknowledging and regretting what they did wrong - and do their best, at whatever personal cost, to undo the harm they caused. People like the author of that statement give a ******** only because Trump is too vulgar and self-destructive for their tastes; but they would line up behind an American Vladimir Putin in a heartbeat.
TBH I'm not sure what someone like Neil thought would happen with brexit with all the 'red lines' the brexiteers wanted to apply. It doesn't matter HOW good your civil service is. There is a little thing called 'reality' inside which they all have to work. I think I said at the time that the deal we ended up with was probably about as good as one would expect and even THAT was crap. It was just as good as could be achieved. It was also as good as it was because the EU didn't want to damage itself any more than it needed to which was, y'know, 'a thing'.
Hannan I can understand, as the guy's an idiot. But Neil is (was?) a smart guy and well enough versed in politics to have been capable of understanding this.
I'd also add I only respect the ones who display courage by actually opposing this. e.g Rogan offers some mild criticism - but what is he doing about it? Guy has a giant platform.
Hannan has been actively involved in trying to undermine liberal democracy in Canada, Australia etc etc
I dunno mate. I can only imagine he believed that something good would come from it because he really, REALLY wanted something good to come from it, rather than thinking there was a reason for it. Unfortnunately wishing for something to be true is not the same as it being true.
https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/probes-into-racism-in-schools-stall-under-trump Trump’s DOJ isn’t investigating racism in schools. Last March they closed 7 of the 12 regional offices investigating them. Keep in mind that there are kids who are going to graduate who spent 8 years under Trump, under his policies. And many more with several years. And those kids are going to spend an average of ~60 years as American citizens. Just the economic cost over their lifetimes is astonishing.
I think the political cost of returning it would be too great for the Dems to even seriously consider it.
It's beyond my comprehension that anyone could look at this and not be either embarrassed or terrified, depending on their own place in the color chart. Emmett Till is lying in the water just off frame on one side, and Jorge Zimmermann is doing a Mexican hat dance while fratboys throw money at him just off the other side. If you look hard enough in the congregation, you'll see Ted Bundy, Ed Gein, Eric Rudolph, Timothy McVeigh, Rush Limbaugh, Charles Manson, John Wilkes Booth, Charlie Kirk, Charles Murray, Cecil Rhodes, Eric Clapton, John Wayne, John Wayne Gacy, Kyle Rittenhouse, Jonathan Ross, Derek Chauvin, Scott Baio, Bruce Willis, Tom Selleck, J.W. Milam, Roy Bryant, Bobby Frank Cherry, Bob Chambliss, and a host of others who represent the values displayed in this racially monochrome image. Crackopia has a different look IRL once you put culture to the faces. For example, the little girl with her feel in the water will not be able to apply for her own line of credit until 1974. The little boy is feeding the dog the severed penis of a dead civil rights worker, after first getting his own fill. The redhead in the pink dress has never been allowed to work a day in her life. The man in the blue jacket is holding a container of BBQ sauce where one of the ingredients is Negro blood. The grey-haired woman center left lets her husband vote for her...
Because there would be no domestic political upside to returning Greenland. In fact, quite the opposite.
Why should they not? He's given they everything they could have asked for- ICE, DOGE, the whitewashing of American history, God in the doctor's office, unlimited control of the military, the promotion of Jesus Christ above all others... Trump has done more for them the real them. Pay no attention to the posing as Rockefeller Republicans- they never existed. They were on the side of evil by not interfering while the Christian Republicans ran roughshod over everyone who failed the paper bag test. than any POTUS in this country's history.
Not counting the expulsion of Singapore, can you think of another example where a country willingly gave up territory? I mean in a context outside of losing a war where you have to accept those terms? I believe once Greenland has been a part of the U.S. for a few years, the idea of returning it to Denmark would become the political equivalent of reparations for slavery. Perhaps de rigueur in some progressive circles, but a non-starter from the centrist to right-wing position of the spectrum.
Is this AI? It doesn't make sense. The entrance to the church goes through the tower and through a hallway into the side instead of at the back looking at the altar like every church I've been in. It also looks unnaturally small. The parking lot doesn't have space for the cars to drive. A guy is bringing what looks like propane and a tackle box to a table. Why did they leave a kid in a car, and if they had to why leave the window open so he could stick his torso outside? Obviously it's a buffet from the long table third from us, so does that make the table closest to us the desert table? If so why are there drinks on it? If not, why are there whole deserts? There's clearly too little table space for the number of people, and that poor kid in grey shorts has to eat standing up, and yet that selfish guy on the far left put his coat on a seat making sure no one sits there. Seems like there would be a problem if you continue the lot and the stream / pond beyond the right border. The foreground figures are massive given the perspective.
