I just think your point that attempts to relate the sort of anti-establishment and nihilistic sentiments that those bands typified to modern MAGA is a pretty daft idea.

Some of them might have favoured right-wing ideas, (although I think it was more nihilist than anything), and others were quite definitely on the left but there was no uniformity in their 'thinking', (if we can even call it that).

I think people are confusing what some of the individuals have said since but that's mostly just a matter of, 'old fart becomes a tory... shock horror'.

Most of the british ones at the time were left-wing if they were anything. Dunno about the states.

I'm talking about the punk rockers now. We obviously can't include people like Bowie anyway.

This is true, I've come to think that they think they are in a position like a cornered animal. They have a lot of rhetoric that says they are being replaced by [insert minority or opposing demographic] and they view that as an existential threat. Thus, they need to strike back to survive. No amount of posturing or growling are going to keep them alive (from their perspective) and so they need to fight hard.

Punks are just like everybody else, just moreseo.

There have always been rightist punks like Fear and Skrewdriver and there have always been leftist punks like Crass and The HIRS Collective. X and the Ramones had far-leftists and far-rightists playing in the same band!

Any investment in Venezuela would take years to produce a meaningful increase in that country's oil production, even if the oil companies decided to do it.

    ???

Yeah, that's why I said that attempts to relate them are pretty daft. They're completely different.

I was agreeing with you IOW :)

In fairness there is a tendency for people to think those in the arts are left leaning or in most cases left wing. Kelsey Grammer is a Trumper, Dali supported Franco, we all know about Morrissey, Alice Cooper and so on. It's a long and notable list.

One other way of looking at this: Frank Zappa once talked about in his book being arrested by the vice squad in California in the mid 60s. In his book, he made a quip that IIRC went, "Still think California is a hippie paradise?" I think about that one from time to time.

I think if anything, we look at art through the lens of what was counterculture 60, 50, years ago.

I read that Greenland might become important if global warming breaks up the polar ice cap. It seems plausible that someone in his orbit is angling to take Greenland for that, for control of what will be new shipping lanes.

Today, right now, Democrats should propose a “sense of the House/Senate” resolution that we will not be bailing out oil companies that invest in Venezuela. Of course it won’t pass and even if it does it’s just a resolution.

But do that NOW so they can say “we told you so” when the time comes.

Imagine how different American history would be if Democrats had done that about mortgages ca. 2005. (Not sure Democrats would have been unified enough at that time; it’s a hypothetical.). Think of how much more momentum Obama would have had in his first 90 days.

    What a leader!

    1. This essentially amounts to a threat of the highest in the land

    2. He's basically admitting publicly the whole country is ********ed based off an illegal action he took. Way to take responsibility DJT.

    He's such a ********ing moron.

I won't post links or images since they're not verifiable accounts, but from what I'm reading, it seems like the Trump administration and ICE are ramping up on Nazi tropes and messaging.

Yes. I've seen this analysis even before Trump's 2nd term about how Canada might be a big beneficiary of the new Arctic trade routes as it may run into their waters.

Buying Greenland isn't something new. There have been discussions in the US Government to acquire the territory a few times in the past. From what I've read, they tried to secretly buy it after WW2.

It's also a fact that China has been trying to get Greenland on the hook and they almost succeeded a few years ago offering to build some infrastructure including airports. This isn't out of their good will. The US admin had to interfere for the deal not to go through and that raised a flag inside the American Government. Obviously Russia has an interest as well. Supposedly they have leads the world in Arctic nuclear icebreaker ships which is crucial for navigation, resource extraction and geopolitical influence.

Controlling Greenland and the Arctic is a legitimate concern for the US. Controlling it helps contain Chinese economic flex as you have a way to create a blockade if necessary. Same thing with the South Asia sea. They supposedly also have rare earth minerals so this whole thing is multi-faceted.

I've some articles / videos on it already. Here is one I just watched in the past couple of days I thought was pretty informative.

So in foreign policy, Greenland is important when warmer temperatures melt the polar ice cap. And in domestic policy, global warming is a hoax.

    This will turn out well.
