Actually, the rise in defence spending in Europe has been going on for some years, since before Trump was elected and it was related to the annexation of Crimea. It's also been ramped up considerably since Trump and particularly since the invasion of Ukraine. I’m seeing headlines of farm bankruptcies are way up. Guess what? Tldw: Chapter 12 bankruptcy is a special designation for farmers and fishers so that they can continue to operate without liquidation of their assets. That way, they can continue operations and we still get seafood and ag products even if a farm/fisher is insolvent. Also, if they do sell stuff: TAX FREE!!! Trump changed the qualification criteria from having at least 80% of your business be in ag to now 50% to qualify for Chapter 12 bankruptcy. Also, it covers $11M in debt up from $3M. So that means you’d have to have at least $30-50M in assets to get yourself in a $11M hole! This why the uber wealthy buy gigantic ranches that ostensibly have someone working on them. It’s also why Scott Bessent claims to be a soy farmer. VCs are buying up farms and turning them essentially into tenements, and then using Chapter 12 as a loophole. It is also why Chapter 12 bankruptcies are skyrocketing. It is a way to avoid painful consequences, even if you didn’t intentionally invest in farmland to qualify for Chapter 12. Some have just found themselves in a “rosier” position.
