Democrats, from the the top to the bottom and with few exceptions, all shy away from political hardball. They don't like to get dirty. And they don't like to do what it takes to win power and position. They want policy without politics. Or policy as a substitute for politics. Liberals, as I have noted before, are at their heart anti-political. Democrats are no exception to that rule.

Not even remotely. People have bills to pay and families to raise, they have to function more or less normally despite the swirling political madness.

It's the ballot box. Our only hope is if (by some miracle) Democrats can unite in a way that leaves no room for doubt about the will of the people. The numbers next year need to be overwhelming in order to overcome all the election interference and meddling. Unfortunately, Democrats are in complete disarray. We really need to win this shutdown healthcare battle. Even that seems unlikely to do much to unite the left.

I think you underestimate how estranged and distant friends and family have become, I'm not so sure about this great desire to mend fences.

Sad but true, feels like we've lost a whole generation (or two) to video games.

I don't know all the ins-and-outs of National Guard deployments, so maybe I don't have this right, but my gut tells me this was a Gavin Newsom misstep:

    https://www.gov.ca.gov/2025/10/05/g...e-of-power-with-cross-state-guard-deployment/

He's right to take the deployment to court. But I think he may have left a card unplayed that he perhaps should have played. I wonder if he should have asserted state sovereignty over the national guard and countermanded the order to deploy the California national guard outside of California. Yes, it would have precipitated a constitutional conflict. That's the point.

Cowards. If you won't fight against America to save yourself, whether that fight is from a great distance or close up, it's cowardly.

Trouble is, no other country wants POCs.

Just because I'm white and youngish doesn't mean I want this. Three times in my young and adult life I've had to deal with Republicans wrecking shit for some reason. Whether it's because some people have to vote for Nader, Stein, or uncommitted all for their fragile egos, because some people really think Trump is a wealthy dude (He's a clown), or because a bunch of jackasses who were born in the US care more about a place they won't visit at all or again when their family members pass on. Again, I voted for Clinton, Biden, and Harris without any complaints. I can sleep at night while the likes of certain people can bitch about how Dems aren't doing things (Want them to do something? GIve them majorities).

It's been a godsend that the Dems have at least had trifectas over the years because this country would be in worse trouble. Michigan didn't have a Dem trifecta from 1983 till 2023, and a lot of people left the state on account of that.

Anyway, Tigers just started and it's Skubal night. They win it means a perfect weekend of being a sports fan for me.

Chelsea win, Tigers won last night, Detroit City FC won (Was at the game), Lions win. Now the Tigers need to win tonight.

Lions ever win a Super Bowl none of you will hear from me for months. If the Tigers and the Lions win it all, well the party will put a Roman orgy to shame.

So I'm trying to reduce the amount of personal stuff I post on here, but if, say, someone I knew was at a conference at Huntington Place this week, and the Tigers win the ALDS on Tuesday or Wednesday, will the celebrations extend down to the river? I'm not too concerned about this hypothetical person's safety so much, but a big part of these conferences is networking and going to dinners with the other people at these conferences, and if they're doing a business meeting at dinner and a bunch of Tigers fans are celebrating nearby, well, it would make the dinner more interesting.

I don't think that's the case. MAGA is a movement, and movements are constantly in a state of becoming, meaning they actively seek change. Democrats represent the status quo and to borrow a quote the status is not quo. For the people that decide elections things kinda suck and they are not getting better and one side is saying I'm going to fix it and one side isn't. That's all they see and that's all they care about. They don't know or care enough to know details or nuance or what the problems really are or what are causing them or what might result. That's the world we live in and have to operate in.

That is the total wrong move unless you want to go autocracy vs autocracy and get rid of democracy totally. You have to understand that even in extreme fascist states like Nazi Germany there are two worlds, one where people are being rounded up into concentration camps and one where people work and eat dinner and watch TV and sleep an hour less than they honestly should and otherwise live their lives. And that group is the vast majority of people. If you try to do something like have a general strike or have mass riots or protests that shut down cities now, that population is going to see the Democrats as the anti-democratic forces that want to create an autocracy through violence. There's nothing Trump wants more. In fact he's making up stories about the Democrats fighting the fight because it serves him.

I'm certainly not advocating that the Democratic Party do nothing. They have to become counterpunchers, responding at the perceived level of the Republicans to any missteps or misfortunes. They have to be patient and wait for the time to strike. And they are going to get it. Because Trump is going to fail. He is going to overreach because his kind always does. He is going to disappoint the people because fundamentally he doesn't care about them. Events of the world are going to overtake him because he only wants to be seen as the person with a plan, not actually have one.

And I'm certainly not advocating this through personal cowardice. It's going to be painful, and for me it's already started. It has to be painful. Those people I talked about earlier are not going to learn intellectually that neo-fascism is bad. They have to live the bad to find out.
