Football Ref is fined $2,600 for messing up a game. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/sports/2001806578_webhawk03.html My initial thought was wow, but I like the accountability. Especially since this was a decision that cost one team a game. Thoughts?
If $83,000 a year for a part-time job is junior, can someone tell me how to start reffing pointyball?
With as many officials on the field and up in the booth as football has, I'm amazed they all didn't get fined.
Didn't soccer have a referee fined out of a lop-sided game where the referee kicked in a goal for the losing team? I know of some referees getting suspended or having their licenses taken away, but what does it take to be fined in youth soccer?
Actually I know the referee they are talking about and he is not even close to a junior official, he has been around for quite a while. Also, each official has their own responsability, and it is the referee's to start the clock if need be, so that is why the others were not fined.
On the subject of money how much do US referees (I know it is likely to be different in each State) get paid for doing an U19 competitive game (as opposed to social grade games)? I am just interested to compare with what we are being paid down here in NZ. Crowdie
I believe U-19 Primere here in Michigan pays $45 to the center and $30 for assistant. I think it goes up to $35 in state cupt, but don't quote me on that.
In Delaware it is 50 for a center and 25 for a line. In Oregon it is 25 for a line and the middle is based on grade 8-35 7-45 6 n up - 55 What do you get paid in NZ? Also, been fined before.. lost a game fee for not doing a match report. I also have a friend that was fined by the referee association for striking another coach while he was coaching a game. (I was reffing that game. Was very interesting. Coach yells go for his knees! Before I can get to him to toss him the coach knocked him out cold. Cant say I blame him.)
In soccer, we instruct the AR's to keep a backup time in case something happens and the referee is unable to determine how much time has expired in the match. I know there have been times when I pushed the button on my watch to start the timer, and the watch did not start. It was probably because I did not push the button in all the way. Other times my battery in the watch just died. Now I wear two watches. Should a soccer referee be fined if he/she is unable to keep time for whatever reason? If so, how much? Half of his game fee? What if he is a volunteer?
Do to the lack of more experienced/willing volunteers I did the assigning for our rec games and our home travel games (the league is so geographically dispersed that each home team provides the refs) Since the vast majority of the refs (around 80-85%) available to me are high school or younger I had some serious problems with kidsjust not showing up for their assignments. I tried to avoid giving habitual offenders more games but I really like the idea of fining them. Obviously they didn't get paid for the game they missed, but maybe an additional substraction from their end of season paycheck might prevent these issues.
Maybe a post season bonus for doing over 5 games - not payable if you forget, are late, etc. This might work better for younger refs.
Oregon has a fine of $25 for missing a match. I would like to do the same here, but since refs are paid on the field here I cannot.
