So the ref blows the whistle for a handball in the box against the Timbers, from the hand, the ball bounces out to Cahill who buries the ball in the back of the net AFTER the whistle was blown. Once the ball goes in the net the ref waves off the PK and allows the goal. Never seen such a ridiculous call in my life, and I'm pulling for the Red Bulls. haha It was a really bad situation and I have a feeling the league is going to get involved and hand down a suspension for that ref.
After the DC Philly match and then this gaffe at the NY Portland game, I'm concerned at the level of officiating in MLS.
Did you guys watch the Olympics? There were just as many bad calls. It's part of the game. The only way to perfect officiating is technology. Otherwise, we've reached the limit of human ability. Also, if you want to have a serious conversasion about refereeing, I suggest you do so in the Referee Forum https://www.bigsoccer.com/community/forums/referee.44/
I did happen to watch the Olympics. I also watch 8-10 matches a week at least. I also still play, so am aware of the limitations of officiating, and still find time to complain about referees. Thanks for the link, but I'd rather wash my eyes with bleach.
Well actually, I was suggesting this thread be closed. Do we really need another thread in the MLS forums about refereeing?
Agreed. Anyways, does anyone else think that the only missing piece to the MLS dominating American sports culture is promotion/relegation?
This is called advantage. You clearly don't understand how refereeing works. You can't be fired. You take classes, you pass the physical test, you get assessed, and the USSF gives you a badge to ref national level games. You won't find a referee on the planet that agrees with you. That was the definition of encroachment. If you don't like it, then you disagree with the Laws, not the referee. Don't get me wrong. That was a poorly officiated game. But the play you highlighted was actually a fine call.
Many markets struggling to fill 18k seats for major league teams, can't imagine how scarcely populated minor league teams would be, especially since the system would have to pop up overnight.
bunge, I think you're referring to the goal, LongDuckDong is referring to a foul near the end of the half where the ref called advantage and the OP thinks a card should have been shown. I haven't seen the foul, but even with advantage a ref can go back and issue a yellow card at the next stoppage. So if the foul did deserve a card then that would be a miss by the ref even if he played advantage.
Similar to what went against montreal when they played colorado. That game result, which people said was being reviewed, has since never been talked about. So that's at least twice in one season... did it happen to any other teams this year that I'm not aware of?
I can't belleve the ref blew the whistle and then chose to ignore His own whistle. I watched the highlight and thought the ball deflected off the Ny players arm, hit a portland player and rebounded to Cahill. So should have been no goal. What I thought was more reason to suspend or remove that ref is due to his being incredibly fat. Did he really keep up with play? (I only watched the highlights).
Actually people said it should be reviewed, but I don't think there was ever any statement or quote that said it was being reviewed.
I recall some single sentence mention of something in a match report. Like the club made a formal request to blah blah. This was weeks ago, so I imagine it was swept under the rug.
As far as I can tell, this ref TOTALLY and COMPLETELY screwed up. He then went on to ABSOLUTELY LIE about it... Statement from referee Jason Anno Pool Reporter Question: On the Red Bulls’ second goal, what did you see on the play? Answer: On the second goal, No. 11 McCarty took a shot and it redirected off a Portland player to No. 17 Cahill who shot and scored. Pool Reporter Question: Did you blow your whistle? Answer: Yes, when the ball entered the goal. Pool Reporter Question: In your view, was it an advantage play? Answer: Yes.
I expect the ref board to say we can't judge the audio of the match because we don't know that it is synchronized properly with the video.
