You gotta love it when a low-rung, dumbass foot soldier blurts out party policy. http://www.freep.com/news/statewire/sw101420_20040721.htm State Rep. John Pappageorge said "If we do not suppress the Detroit vote, we're going to have a tough time in this election."
Ah, the big tent of the republican party. You wouldn't want to win them over with ideas and visions or anything. If the dems don't immediatly make this into a commercial, I will be disappointed.
Florida 2000 did a great job of suppressing the vote by incorrectly removing tens of thousands from the voter rolls. Will we see similar in Detriot? Or will they just lose votes, a la Diebold.
I love the fact that the Republican strategy is to discourage voting rather than to reach out to other eligible voters. Nice to see they at least acknowledge that their message isn't going to excite the electorate and bring new faces to the polls.
I find it reassuring that people who could never be motivated to go to the polls or figure out the whole process can be counted on to continue the tradition of not voting. Huzzah! Plus, Detroit has all those shifty Arabs.
The Democrats should really thank Pappageorge...thanks to him, they now have a new posterboy to getting out the black vote and fundraising.
He said it was a bad choice of words. Fine. What word was he going for? I can't think of a polite way to express what he was trying to say.
He was trying to say "We dont want people voting for our opponent." So the old Republican way is to "disenfranchise" the voters at the polls. The dem way is to keep the opponent off the ballot. Right Ralph?
"In the context that we were talking about, I said we've got to get the vote up in Oakland (County) and the vote down in Detroit. You get it down with a good message." Options for the "good message": -- How 'bout them Tigers? Sure are better than the Royals, aren't they? -- That Saddam's guy's dead, so have a beer why donthcha? -- The Urban League sure kicks the NAACP's ass, don't it? -- Free School Voucher for every child left behind! -- Speakin sports, the Lions are playing in Dallas on Oct 31 -- howzabout a road trip? Hell, stay all week.
"We need to pull a Florida in Detroit" "Doesn't Bush have a brother we could elect governor of Michigan?" "Free Pistons tickets for all registered democrats who don't vote!"
In southern California they use more subtle techniques. They have guys standing outside of polling places that demand to see ID of Hispanics before they enter the polling place. That is another way to suppress the vote. My wife is in Manhattan right now. She tells me that everywhere you look, there are "Vote or Die" posters up. You can also buy T-shirts, bumpers stickers, etc. I heard it was a Sean Combs thing. Interesting that this could be the anti-dote to the Reep strategy of suppressing the vote.
You can't be this dense. Ralph is keeping himself off of the ballot by failing to submit the required number of valid signatures. Politics 101. Get WAY more signatures than you need because a significant percentage won't be registered voters.
Ironically the Dem candidates did a pretty good job of pissing off a lot of the major political players in Detroit when they skipped a scheduled debate in the city during the primary. (It did lead to a hilarious photo op when Al Sharpton showed up for the debate and sat alone on stage next to empty chairs with the other candidates' names on them). Some were even saying they wouldn't participate in Dem get out the vote drives b/c they'd been snubbed. Of course this yahoo's quote will paper all of that over. Nothing like Oakland County to unify Detroit pols. And vice versa of course.
