Here's another thing to think about. In 2012 TFC will have their 5th anniversary in MLS. I think that would be the time to come out with some sort of 'Reds' branding to go along with the 5th anniversary. Something like...' 5 years in the Red!' or 'Toronto...Marching in with the Reds for 5 years!', something along those lines but carry the "Reds" from there after.

As some have said about the Reds being generic and used all over the world for soccer clubs is a very good reason for TFC to use it. No one in MLS has picked it up and with Toronto, being as internationally diverse as it is, it makes sense to have a name that is used by at least one club in every country.

Because pandering to what makes everyone ELSE in the world great is an absolutely wonderful way to define yourself.

If TFC is to have a nickname, I'd rather not share it with too many others, it should reflect Toronto, not as some multicultural city of ambiguous formation, but as, frankly, the place that it is and always has been. In a big way, I've always thought of Toronto as the capital of English Canada. Maybe that's a good start, Toronto Canadians?

As far as people mentioning that calling the team "Tories" is a bad idea because not everyone supports the Tories, in the United States a Tory is someone who supported England in the war of independence. Tories are essentially the United Empire Loyalists.

Maybe that's an even better way to go; Toronto Imperials, we could all hum the Empire theme from Star Wars, lol.

Possibly, but Reds has already been accepted clearly by the fans, the media and almost everywhere else TFC is mentioned. Redcoats is not popular by all accounts as far as I can ascertain. Ben Knight continually plugged it in his blogs etc but it gained no ground. The Reds is about as bland as it gets and yet its seems to be perfect for TFC in the mainstream. I would suggest though that TFC never declares an official nickname.

There's a reason the club switched out the shorts to be all red.

Not everyone will like it but the groundswell has already happened.

C'mon you Reds, When the Reds go marching, the reds will come through in the end. They built a house on lakeshore for the Reds, the Reds. Nous Chanton les rouge allez, and so on.

I think it's cool some of your wear the redcoats though!

Just because The Reds has been used up to this point doesn't mean that it won't be replaced by something new. These things have a way of working themselves out.

The Reds is a placeholder in my opinion. We need to remember that the Toronto Public at Large has yet to really embrace this team. We are still the new kid on the Toronto Sports scene. Just because there are 20,000 at BMO doesn't mean that the city is watching.... yet...

When Montreal and Vancouver join the league (and NY Cosmos?) then people will start to really take notice. Some other nickname will likely become popular... I'm looking forward to our own identity, not just another Reds/Real/United.

I'm not sure what I feel on the subject.

If you don't like the nickname don't use it. Some broadcasters will since we wear red and there's a history. If you're not of British descent that's really not an issue. We don't want the "official nickname" added.

Well, considering that our stadium only holds 20,100, I think that you're right.

Ha-ha. We all know what are stadium holds. We would have a hard time matching 32K in season tickets, if we had a stadium that could hold more. Does that help you?
