Missed a chance and will hate that he did, but still an ultra-bright talent for Barca and the USA.

He has to put it on frame. The goalie was coming out and spreading wide,
so maybe the goalie deflects it somehow. Yes, most players put that in,
but to me not getting in on frame is the bigger sin, than not scoring (
and again, he should have scored also)

Also, he took a terrible approach to striking the ball and gave himself no chance to go upper shelf.

He's a defender playing forward. Unfortunately, that reared its ugly side here.

Didn't see this one - was occupied on a bike careening through DTLA - sounds like not Dest's best outing. How were Barca overall?

Outside of the miss Dest played fairly well. Unfortunately, the miss is going to be remembered and focused on because it would have put Barca up 1-0 when they were looking like the better team. He started at RW and moved to RB in the second half. He had a couple of key defensive plays, one being a timely clearance inside the 6 that could have been a goal. He also picked up the assist in Barca’s lone goal. Barca played okay. Real Madrid played okay. Real just played a tad bit more okay than Barca. IMO, Real was only dangerous via the counter since Barca was pushed up so high. Overall, I think Dest had a solid match.

Looked at it again....he's gotta strike that with the outside of right or instep. A short jab. The ball had pace on it already and he was close to goal, so he didn't need to wind up.

He tried to hit it with inside of right and like a square pass and
got totally under it. The ball might have popped up some. He wasn't prepared with his body to use his left.

Dest played a really good game; too bad about the miss. These things happen to every attacking player. Dest also had a great assist in the game

That’s really flattering. Seriously, what does Dest have to be thinking about that?

    That’s some immense pressure.

    Dest is big league legit.

Which is it? I've heard that he's an attacker playing right back, and now a defender playing forward. He can't be both, but he could be neither.

    Very Rene Magritte of you!

I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder. (specifically Koeman)

    I don't see him as a winger long-term.

Top teams that play 'total football' would be a fit, and his versatility is
a plus, not a minus for that. I could see him as an Alphonso Davies attack from back, or similar style but in midfield as well.

Ah to be 20 and with so many options!!

The assist was wonderful and takes the sting of what was a terrible miss. He could have been MOTM had he just passed the ball into the net. Still love me some Dest but man o man... that was a hard sitter to miss.

Yeah, if only that 6'7" 220 pound guy wasn't charging towards him... Some of you are absolute knobs. Sitter? hardly. should he have gotten it on frame? yeah, i can agree with that. But sitter? L.m.mf'ing.a.o

We have no right to call that a sitter from our perch outside the lines, but I can bet the guy's teammates were ticked that he missed a chance like that, especially when Alaba came down the other side of the field and lashed a beauty in to take the lead. At his level, it really should have been 1-0 Barca. Hard to argue that. Does it happen? Of course. Doesn't change the fact that it should have been put away by a guy playing for Barcelona in El Clasico.

But how is it a sitter? Some of you act like Courtois is not a massive human and he was closing down the angles. Sitter means you should score as the goalkeeper is out of position from a pass or deflection. That was extremely far from a sitter. Once again, it should have been on frame. But to call it a sitter is to be a histrionic keyboard warrior.

Yeah if sitter = get on frame. The yes he missed the sitter.

it was a bad shot but not a sitter.

Did I call it a sitter? Re-read the post you quoted. There are many definitions of "sitter" but I never called it that. In fact I said that we/I have no right to call it a sitter.

The above could also be applied, word for word, to discussions of a certain infamous moment in USMNT history.

I think (in both cases) that people sometimes fail to appreciate the impact of a well-positioned advancing goalkeeper. Simultaneously shrinking the target and shrinking the time available to the shooter makes a big difference - and can turn an easy chance into something more like a 50-50.

When do we start the conversation about whether or not Dest is the best skill player to every suit up in red, white, and blue?

The guy is not typical of what we produce.

During the U20 World Cup (seems like eons ago), we begun to see what Dest does to opponents. He puts so much pressure on his side of the field that it opens up things on the other side.

I absolutely cannot wait to watch this guy carving turkeys at the World Cup.

Maybe we could meet and talk about this after class today. I'm studying Dutch, naturally.

    Not typical - funny.
