"The turnout is reflective of the difficult economy. A lot of people are looking for opportunities. This is a world-class stadium, and an opportunity to come and work for a brand new stadium is hard to pass up," said McGowan.

I read that as, times are so tough, people are considering working at a soccer stadium.

Actually, you have to consider that these positions are very, very part-time. I read that as "man, times are so tough that 1,000 people will show up for the opportunity to work every two weeks, or so".

I hope this is a misquote. Just graduated high school, has never had a job & is already talking about his pension?
I'm also leery of people who use the word "shot" when talking about security work!

I think it actually shows some good sense for him to start thinking about retirement now. Most people wait too long and then end up being Walmart greeters in their old age.
