Wonder what excuse the NYC2 proponents would have if new owners called the team "New York Cosmos." Not that it's necessarily a good idea, but watching them squirm would be a good laugh.
That stuff is nasty. I never could figure out how they could sponsor 2 soccer teams, multiple racing teams, and an entire airplane racing circuit.
I guess sales are down for over caffeinated beverages. Ask the Sonics owner how hard it was to keep them afloat when he was boarding up a dozen Starbucks a week.
Just goes to show you, when things are going bad, people don't want to be awake and coherent enough to care. Sykotyk
What does this mean for Red Bull Arena? Will Red Bull keep the naming rights or will a new owner have the ability to sell them to another company? Does this mean RBA could be getting the dreaded concert stage?
Assuming this is true, and right now it's a big jump, I'll be curious to see what the value of the team is and how much less the team is sold for if the new owners were to agree to keep the Red Bulls name.
I call bullshit. The RedBulls were going to make NY MLS' first superclub!!!! [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MTUI12bLZc"]He even said so![/ame]
A couple student's of mine set the flugtag north american record flying a giant banjo/handglider thing. crazy stuff... Why would you sell your team on the verge of creating a new stadium unless you ran out of money?
giant banjo huh.... Our little group tried to build a guitar/fiddle with willy nelson likeness. The Free Willy!
Rebrand to New York Cosmos. Then, expansion for New York City FC New York Cosmos vs New York City FC derby would be awesome.
Red Bull never seemed like a sustainable business to me. It's all about marketing marketing marketing. How long can they keep that up? 20 years down the line, does anyone see Red Bull still around? Maybe if they diversify their product line. As for "re-branding", I suggest that the league should remove this "Red Bull" dressing to reveal the Metro New York brand that has been there all along. Metro is MLS. Red Bull can still sponsor the team on the front of the jerseys and name the stadium Red Bull Arena. They can be all over the Metro advertising, but the team should be Metro New York.
Just about everyone I know has no idea who the redbulls are. However, and shockingly, many still remember the name Metrostars. Go back to Metrostars, keep Redbull as sponsor and Arena name.
If there are going to be two NY teams with one of them named Cosmos, it makes far more sense for the new team to take the NASL name. People would expect great things from a team with that name, and the current team has the stink of years of failure on it.
