I have felt like crap about our team for the past couple of months, but then I looked back at their recent form, and they are unbeating in, IIRC, 6 games. Now, because I live in the states, I have Comcast cable, and Comcast doesn't have Satanta, I haven't seen our beloved club in a couple of months. How does everyone feel about our recent form? Are we lucky for squeeking some out draws, or are we playing well and not putting the ball in the net? Give me some help!
Since the television presence of Rovers is spotty at best, I can only speak about Saturday's match on Setanta...I almost turned it off given the long-ball, dump into space, can't link more than three passes play of both sides. It was football at its worst. The second half was better, with Blackburn finally starting to play some possession football. I guess I'm starting to get spoiled by the more South American, keep the ball on he ground, clever pass, possession approach of our home team, but I do expect better of Blackburn. However, viewing one match does not a season make. Others who have been seeing our team more regularly need to chime in about whether Saturday's match was reflective of Blackburn this season or just an aberration. Incidentally, aren't DC going to tear up the league and international competitions this year? I can't wait.
I also haven't had the chance to watch a game in a couple of months, but along with seahawkdad and a seemingly pretty large contingent of US-based observers, I feel that the premiership this year is really missing something. we get all excited about the possibility of change at the top and what happens instead is that the mid-tier teams seem to be playing well below their level and the bottom teams aren't using their share of the TV money to improve themselves so much as pay off debts. the league seems a little bit sick at the moment...
Personally I thought Saturday was one of our better games recently, unfortuantely. Bolton game and City second half weren't bad. I can't remember the last time I walked away from Ewood thinking we'd played well. In fact I think we've been looking poor at home since we lost against Portsmouth, second half against Newcastle was good but that's about it. I'm not moaning though, we've been better than last year and we're pickng up points again. The overall standard of play in the Premier League is pretty much the same as it's been in recent years. Oddly the only real change at the top is Liverpool in a nose dive with the new owners not helping and disrupting the club, along with other things. Chelsea aren't as dominant due to the disruption brought about by their owner wanting to mess with football matters and bring his mates in, Schev and Grant. Both signs that the money has screwed things up if anything. Newcastle another example. The European clutch of clubs are trying to consolidate, clear debts/ build new grounds etc. City are the only real change at the top. The bottom clubs are scared of overspending, getting relegated and going into a Leeds style free fall, apart from Sunderland who have had more than the TV money invested recently. We've been beating each other to death over the lack of transfers on other boards. A lot of fans are of the opinion that we should be keeping our money if buying the likes of McFadden costs £5 mil. That's my view too, but I'm bit disappointed we left ourselves so short in midfield. Although the money we got for a 33 year old who was past his best since breaking his leg was good business. I think it just boils down to clubs aren't willing to let players go at this stage in the season unless it's for stupid money. All the extra money means is we have to pay more for average players. We're using a lot of cash to reduce prices and get some of the loyal fans back who have been priced out of the game lately, like my dad until this year. We've also got one eye on redeveloping the Riverside, although I'm not sure why. Probably the biggest reason for all the lack of activity is the pending takeovers that are rumoured to be happening.
Speaking of takeovers, wasn't a Daniel Williams rumored to be interested in buying Rovers? The reason I ask is that he is now reported to be interested in buying the Rochester Rhinos, a US second division club. If it is the same, then he has lowered his sights a bit...which is a good thing. Earlier, while engaged in a related discussion on the BRFCS board, I did a bit of Googling and wasn't at all impressed at the size of his investment firm. Rhinos are more in that league, not Rovers.
He was yes. He pulled out because the Walker trust wouldn't lower their valuation. I think he was hoping he'd get some sympathy after playing the life long fan card, but it didn't work. I'd rather see someone with an interest in the club, rather than sell out like Liverpool, Man U and Chelsea, but they've got to have money to take the club on. There are a few more interested parties but I'm not sure they're anything more than rumours.
By the way, American Soccer reported last night that the Rhinos are in a little bit of a financial crisis with some of the loans for the stadium. Also, Seahawkdad, yes, DC United looks poised to take MANY trophies this year. What a quiet off season until, BAM, 5 players in a week. Good ones to boot!
