Agree with what you guys have said. Scouts look for one or two tools and consider that a good player if they find one. If a player has one or two tools at an elite level they are always gonna try to develop the other tools. He is still 20, if we can help him develop one or two of the other things a CB is supposed to be good at, he will be an amazing contributor for us. Amongst the cantera boys my personal feeling is that Joan Martinez has the highest ceiling. But who knows, development is so tricky and doesn't always follow a linear path. But that's the guy i keep an eye on rather than Jacobo and the rest. I am hoping that from that crop if we can somehow get a Nacho type of player, that would be great. Just wanna give yet another shout out to the legend Nacho Fernandez. We were spoiled with him serving the club as 3rd/4th choice for many many years. Now we realize how hard it is to find a player like him.
There were times in his career when Nacho could have left and started for a genuinely high calibre European side, but he didn’t, and never complained. Gave us so so many great and important performances. We were lucky to have him.
I wish we could sign Pepe in every decade in my lifetime as a Real Madrid fan! 10/10 defender. That debut season performance at the Camp Nou will never be forgotten.
When Ramos was moved back to the CB positioin, I was shitting myself. "He is fine as a rightback," I told myself.
I remember that. You were in the very small minority of folks who were against moving him to CB. Some posters (not me) like @YOUNGSTARS87 said his future is at CB not even 6 months into his tenure.
Shay I was one of those who thought moving Ramos to CB was a bad idea I have learned my lesson. Vini a la derecha!
Oh you were part of the few who didn't want him moved. Well turns out i only recalled it partially. Lol. Ramos was probably the greatest CB of his era but he had the Madrid stink on him so in my opinion, he was/is brutally underrated.
I don't think it's stink, I just think he get overlooked because of the whole CR7 v Messi, BBC v MSN, etc., too many other front cover news stories for him to get the recognition he deserved. People attribute the titles to the talent he played with and use red cards and evidence against his individual talent, but on the wing he was a Cafu, Maldini. Marcelo scored tons of goals, free kicks, penalty kicks yet he's best known for being a hard nosed CB and Captain. WC, EC, CL trifecta. GOAT.
He was so good at RB. It's mad he was an even better CB. Another reason many were against this is because young Ramos was not the most stable defensively back then but being on the flank your errors can be stopped before they get to shoot, something which a CB cannot afford to make. But boy here we are.
You don't even need to say "probably". He's undeniably the greatest CB of his era in my opinion. There is no one that comes close in my opinion. He had elite physical, technical and mental/leadership attributes. I can't think of many that that have all of those at a high level, let alone at a high level that Ramos consistently reached. Oh, and not to mention he had the 'X-factor', considering the amount of important goals/assists he literally made out of sheer mentality.
You don't get this much credit in the game when you lose your marbles as often as Ramos did. Pepe was practically erased from the game after one night, being a truly great player just comes with a lot more than just playing well. His attitude and choices have unfortunately let more of that identity come through, could have been a wonderful representative of the club, the national team and the sport, instead he's taking on celebrity boxing and will appear in an even around next year.
If we have the opportunity to sign a 19 year old Ramos and 24 year old Pepe, I'd sign the paperworks in a heartbeat even knowing their potential discipline issues.
There is no way we're going to sign another attacking midfielder in the Mexican 16 year old Gilberto Mora, right? Gotta catch em all?
One great thing is that the Spain U20 GK Fran Gonzalez plays for Real Madrid; he should be groomed to replace Courtuis eventually.
I like that but goalkeepers are like pitchers in baseball/kickers in football, everything looks great then all of a sudden they drop some funny goals and that confidence is shattered, potentially forever. I think this is a position where you try to have as many options as possible in your futures rotation. Look at how many Chelsea have gone through.
Apparently we're trying to sign him and have him arrive in 2027 lol... He does look like a ridiculous talent though....
