Oh yes, I'm well aware of that. But in this specific case, I'd say that's City's problem: if they want to buy a player of his caliber from a top European competitor, then we should ask for a premium and City should pay such premium.
If the Madrid was a real "selling club" that would be putting an insane amount on him. "Selling clubs" don't sell below market.
The market isn't what you value your player it's what everyone is willing else values your player as. So you value Rodrygo at 170M, no one buys him, he sits on the bench next season, what did you achieve?
The absolute max anyone is paying for Rodrygo is no more than €120m in any circumstance. And, transfer fees between two Prem teams have been very inflated for some time now. So €100m for him is a nice fee imo. An extra €20m isn’t going to make any difference to how we run or what future business we do. We might even sell for less.
Teams that aren't in the CL have no chance of signing Rodrygo, so that has to be taken into consideration. He could get easily over 100ME offer from Saudi Arabia. And of course if other teams are trying to low ball the club, then it should stick to the plan and keep him. Some guys that I've never heard of with empty trophy cabinets are going for over 100 million, so the club should stand firm.
Ok you keep him, he's now a bench player who is unhappy with his role, you get even lower output just given the role change, and you are back in the same situation next summer with a player that you've now devalued further. What did you accomplish?
The problem with your solution is that there has to be a club that the player is willing to go to. So far it would seem that criteria has not being met, so even if Real Madrid were willing to pay for someone to take him away - if he doesn't want to go then it won't happen. Also you assume that he will remain a bench player all season long, that he will remain unhappy all season long and that he will have an evey lower output. My guess is the club is gambling that he will have a better season as will the team and his value will go back up over 100me if they are patient.'
Sherlock Holmes here. It's a safe assumption based on 1. him being unhappy now with a bigger role, 2. lower output from lower minutes.
EPL selling players to each other at ridiculous fees isn’t the measurement for anything. It’s like a money laundering scheme for them to work the books
The absolute worst. For them all of our players aren't that great and are worth pennies while every other player is worth their weight in gold. I get we have deficiencies in our squad but that doesn't mean we have a shit squad. We just have had poor leadership that has decided to ignore obvious holes and issues in the guise of frugality.
You keep him and then pat yourself on the back when we need him to step up and he plays a significant role in helping us win a CL and/or La Liga. Like he has done in the past. You're narration that it can only end badly for him just speaks to your own internal bias.
It’s exactly like that. Are they being incentivised off the record to keep the money within the league I wonder somehow, under the guise of ‘Prem proven’.
2 years ago, yeah? Or he can be on the pitch but somehow not exist at the same time. Also like he's done in the past. Except, much more recently. Do you know what version of Rodrygo you'll be getting next season? Joselu was critical to our UCL campaign in 23/24 and 3 weeks later he wanted to be shipped to Doha to play with Al Gharafa, he's so bored nowadays that he does his own commentary/podcasts on European football. What if when he receives his first concrete offer, Rodrygo decides it's best for his career to leave? Be a starter at another top club? Perhaps for more money even. Who/what are going you to blame for his exit then?
It makes zero sense to push Rodrygo out. Sure he had a down season, but so did everyone else (no one had a great season) He’s playing out of position on the right. Vinny and Mbappe both had times playing like donkey’s (Vinny moreso) and that hurt him as well and having LV as his right back. The time he filled in for Vinny on the left was one of the stretches where we looked good. He’s clearly better at playing with Mbappe. All that being said, he’s got to play better. But we don’t need to sell him. Unless he’s running for the exit I see no reason why we let him earn the minutes and if Vinny is still the donkey he’s been for the last year, sit him and play Rodrygo. Especially with the contract with Vinny and possible injuries. Seriously, this place is insane. Sell Rodrygo to buy another CB???? Why? We can sign Konate or whomever regardless.
What is aliens came and took over atletico and used their infinite money to fund them? You disregarded the narrative of a positive with Rodrygo, then brought up a "what if" scenario where there is no proof of concept. When Casemiro wanted to leave once we signed Tchouameni, things moved quickly. Same for others. The reporting from reputable sources do not support your negative narratives.
The ideal scenario is for Rodrygo to stay and be a substitute player. With Thiago's emergence maybe we don't need that extra midfielder. But thats quite unrealistic because by now he sees himself as a superstar. But unfortunately he is not, so any fee beyond 100 million is pretty unrealistic imo.

Casemiro told the club he wanted to leave after the UCL final and before we made any moves for Tchouameni. Facts. Rodrygo publicly flirted with City. He praised the EPL on another occasion. Also facts.
I think it's pretty simple, really. Rodrygo sees himself as a star, starter and an unmovable pillar of the front 4 'MVBR', he was quite vocal about that. The club doesn't share that sentiment; Mbappe and Vini are ahead of him in status and stardom and always will be (while at RM). He wants to play as a LW, that won't happen either. Is Rodrygo happy with a sub role after being spoiled all of last season just because? Does he want to be relegated to the bench in a WC year? No. The club won't force Rodrygo out to make room for another player – that's a fallacy, the club would he happy to have him as a sub. With Franco registered with the Castilla, the club has a vacant spot on the first team. RM don't need to sell Rodrygo to go after a fresh recruit. If Rodrygo leaves, it will be on his own accord.
If Spurs end up signing Eze, maybe Savinho stays at City and Rodrygo at RM. Not sure if they want both Eze and Savinho though Maddison is out with ACL.
