Yeah, it means disproportionate focus to the exclusion of other current needs and attainable targets.

Olise isn't coming this summer no matter what. It's not realistic. So many of the engagement bait articles that will talk about "wanting to play with Mbappé" and whatever...as if he's gonna be crying in a few weeks time when returns to Bayern camp and has to remember that his talisman is Harry Kane instead, what a shame that's gonna be for him.

And, of course, when talking about Perez, fixations, and all that stuff...Harry Kane couldn't have been a more perfect replacement for Benzema or come into the market at a better time to replace Benzema, but Kane's a boring personality who tries to lead a normal-ish life off the field, and Perez was determined to bet Mbappé no matter how many times previously Mbappé had turned him down, and that's how we are where we are today. PR over actual squad building.

Kane instead of Mbappe with no Kroos replacement and makeshift defense in important games wouldn't have changed anything for this team.

Funny part is Kane was mocked for "empty goals" as Bayern failed to win Bundesliga for the first time in a decade in his first season.

 

When you have a problematic defense and midfield, it helps when the forward works hard.

Even funnier that Florentino kicked out the guy that achieved that because of players tantrums.

 

So in terms of "the guy", which one was it, what was the issue, problematic midfield and defense or player tantrums....

Florentino is now salivating because Rodri won the Golden ball. He can't resist putting the Golden ball and Golden boot together in the same team. Same as 2014.

The way he bossed the midfield in a WC final and handled the Argentine brutality like he was walking his kids in the park was something else. He was a king in midfield for the entire competition.

Spain's captain, WC MVP, brilliant midfielder, brings experience, Balloon D'Or winner..it's honestly a match made in heaven..

Junior, 2024 Balloon D'Or and Riquelme be damned, just get the guy, Flo..at least genuinely try..

It's minor surgery from what I've heard.

 

I read it's a back thing that takes 15 mins to get done with no downtime and will be ready for pre-season..

 

In all truth, my biggest concern with Rodri would simply be how much willingness City have in letting him go. Like, I'm not talking how much they'll command in terms of fee, I mean just in how much of an effort they're making to keep him, extend his contract, all that stuff, or if they would be ok turning him loose now and thinking they've gotten maximum value from having him the past seven seasons.

My reasoning being that, if they don't have much objection towards letting go of him, that might tell me they know something about how well they expect him to hold up, and that they think it's better to cut bait now than see him decline and be injured while on their payroll.

For my part, I'm all in favor of getting Rodri in here. We've been a bit too extreme about either only signing young players on transfer fees, or bringing in 28+ players only on free transfers. It's years late to correct for prior mistakes made operating this way, but the next best time to stop being that dogmatic is now. Maybe just have enough wisdom to not view and treat Rodri like a 4,000 minute player and that should help. Besides, if part of the logic in only signing younger players via transfers was that we could get most/all of our money back (or more) when selling some of them later, well, we haven't made any efforts towards actually doing that with any of those players, the ones we're ready to move on from are still here. We ended up not making dick from selling Rodrygo, Vini's running out his contract so odds are we're not getting anything for him unless he's willing to leave this summer, even that part of the idea turned out to be more of a "made sense on paper but didn't work out that way in reality" situation.

 

The reality is we don’t need Rodri for every game. It’s the business end and the bigger matches we need him for. If he plays half the matches next season that would be fine.

 

The problem with this way of thinking is we can't pick and choose when the player will be healthy and on form.

He could be healthy for the entire 1st half of the season and still be conked out when the UCL quarters and beyond come.

 

Same logic can be applied to anyone on the team. Having him helps reduce the load management on others as well.

That said, everything I've read indicates he wants to leave and return to Spain..

 

Most obvious signing this window : Rodri. If we're a serious club wanting to meaningfully avenge for last season, we will go for him.

Even if we get Olise, the problems about midfield structure, balance and control would still be there.

Whether that is Rodri, I dunno.

 

This Olise rumour is probably a ploy by the club to gain leverage in negotiation with Vini, telling him that if you don’t extend then we have someone else in place.

 

Sell Mbappe and Tchoumeni, bring in Enzo, Rodri and Haaland. Instantly go back to winning titles.

Sadly, you're probably right. It's been a while since Florentino and the club acted in good faith.


I can remember a time, although it was a long time ago, but it was a time when Florentino would announce what he was gonna do and do it. Figo, Zidane, Ronaldo. There was no bluffing.


He would tell the world the most expensive record transfers were the cheapest ones and these days he's making free transfers the most costly ones.

 

Maybe, but why would he care? Junior wants more money.

The only true leverage the club had was renew now or rot on the bench in a WC season..
