That's kind of nonsense if I'm honest.

Free agent next summer. Probably will get a renewal until 2029 with a payrise. He's asked for a year break from Belgium NT

Highly doubt he's getting more than 1 year. We don't hand out multi year renewals to 30+.

I know Silva isn't a renewal but he just got a 2 year contract. I'm sure current players will feel like exceptions can be made...

Yea. Courtois being a GK likely to get an exception compared to others.

Silva isn't a renewal, you're not getting a free agent for 1 year contract. I doubt Courtois is where we make the exception, but I could be wrong.

It's funny that Mendy, at 29, got a 3-year renewal (his entourage says 4) despite being demonstrably injury prone and the medical team reportedly advising against the renewal.

But if a player is 30, he's automatically limited to a 1-year extension.

    No logic, just "policy".

He signed a two-year contract extension until 2027, not a three-year one, even though he still had one year left on his previous deal, which was due to expire in 2025.
His entourage are claiming that the contract runs until 2028 because it includes an option for an additional season, which is most likely tied to appearances and/or minutes played.

Not defending the Mendy contract of course, but there's logic behind having a hard-set rule about post-30 renewals after we got caught up in "How could you not agree to renew so-and-so LEGEND of the club after all he did for us during his career?!" sentiments when players like Raul, Casillas, Guti, etc wanted longer-term contracts late in their career.

An extension is a new contract and renders the previous contract null and void.

There was never an official communication from the club but what was leaked to the media is that he was extended in July 2024 (he was 29 and 1 months old then) with a contract until June 2027. That's 3 seasons

    2024/25
    2025/26
    2026/27

My point is if he had extended a mere 11 months later, the new contract would have been only 1 year. But since he was only 29 years and 1 month old, he got a 3-year (potentially 4-year) contract :D

Fabrizio Romano, per JFD, said it was a 3+1 contact (2027/28 would be optional. AS recently reported that Mendy's camp insists it's a 4 year contract ie till 2027/28.

Every source is crap including this one, but Picon says that contrary to reports, no progress has been made in any direction on the Vinicius contract front

You're mixing up the new contract's total duration with the actual extension.
Before signing the extension, Mendy's contract already covered:

    2024/25
    The new deal then added:
    2025/26
    2026/27

    So the extension was:
    2025/26
    2026/27
    Two additional seasons.

The resulting contract after the extension covered:
    2024/25 (already under contract)
    2025/26 (added)
    2026/27 (added)

That's why people call it a 2-year extension. The fact that the new contract ran until 2027 means it covered three seasons from the date it was signed, but only two of those seasons were newly added.

As I said, an extension is a new contract that renders the old contract null and void immediately. That's why it will be a new 3-year/4-year contract beginning from 24/25 and ending in 26/27 or 27/28.

"People" call it a "2-year extension" because it extended his original contract expiry date i.e. June 2025 to June 2027. It has nothing to do with him already being under contract because, again, a new contract cancels the old contract meaning that during the 24/25 he was fulfilling the first year of his new contract.

You're still conflating two different concepts: the legal contract and the contract extension.
Yes, legally, the new agreement replaced the old one. Nobody is disputing that.
But when people say a player signed a 2-year extension, they're referring to how many additional guaranteed years were added beyond the previous expiry date, not the legal duration of the replacement contract.

    Original expiry:
    2024/25

    New expiry:
    2026/27

    Added seasons:
    2025/26
    2026/27

    That's two additional years.

The new contract itself may have run for three seasons (2024/25–2026/27), but the extension was still only two years because one of those seasons was already covered by the previous deal.
Otherwise, every player who renews with one year remaining would magically receive an extra year on paper, which isn't how contract extensions are reported in football.

And he's starting to be injured a lot, we should probably see if the new medical staff helps in general but we all know where this is going

Bro..you're arguing for no reason whatsoever..

RM gave him a new 3-year contract. He signed a new 3-year contract.

1st year under new contract: 24/25
2nd year under new contract: 25/26
3rd year under new contract: 26/27
Potential 4th year under new contract: 27/28

This is no magical addition of years. The new contract nullifies the old contract, for example if the player gets a pay raise under the new contract, it is effective immediately not when the remaining period covered under the old contract finishes.

If you have any further objections to "3 years" please argue with Fabrizio Romano and Guillermo Rai from The Atheltic

But no reporter said there was any progress :D

All JFD and Fabrizio said was that the club and Junior agreed...to meet and discuss the new contract situation after a year of stalling.

But we all knew they parties would meet after the WC; Junior wanted to impress and possibly win the WC or the top scorer award and force Perez's hand. In fact, initial reports suggested that these discussions would happen this week, now it's the end of the month.

I would tread lightly here. Although keepers typically can still perform at a high level as they age, Courtois has shown some signs of decline and the injuries are piling up.

He may be looking for term to secure one last big payday.

Im still fine with Thibo...if he renews till 2028 I wouldnt mind..ofc I expect some wage cut..what alternatives do we have on market? From world cup games what I saw Diogo Costa was good and Gill..I doubt Flo will buy Gill as first team option. He would be addition if Lunin leaves.Diogo Costa could be expensive.I like Joan Garcia and I think Barca has secured good keeper for long term.

We have two leftbacks ahead of him on the depth chart. Mendy is the worst leftback out of the four (including Fran Garcia who just left). And why would he stay too?
