The situation is clear: either Gvardiol extends his contract or a move to Real Madrid will be pushed this summer. @Plettigoal pic.twitter.com/c6oe6wrGYh— Madrid Zone (@theMadridZone) June 10, 2026
Agree about Carreras. Regarding Gvardiol, he's a defensively solid LB, but his main position will be CB for a decade just like when Ramos finally shifted to full time CB in 2010 under Mou. Even Pep mostly played him at CB last season before the injury. And CB has been his main position for NT.
If Real Madrid somehow lands Gvardiol this summer, the defensive lineup will be very scary. Gvardiol - Rudiger - Konate - Dumfries That right there is a backline that can challenge for titles. "No Carreras, Huijsen nor Asensio" is just want what the doctor ordered. Yes, please.
Rudiger is a massive liability + he's reckless. He should not be our starting CB. In fact, the club shouldn't have renewed him imo. Gvardiol played mostly as LCB this season, so he could be paired with Konate which I think would make for a more balanced than having two error prone CBs. Schlotterbeck can slot in there too. Carreras was mostly awesome for us until March, he fell out of favor with Arbeloa after his injury because Junior kept complaining about him overlapping too much..
I rate Rudiger much higher than boneheads like Asensio, who suck in addition. Huijsen is just garbage and not Real Madrid material. Rudiger over both of them all day, and twice on sunday.
Asencio is a child but last season he was, for months, our best CB even when Rudiger was fit. We forget that. I think he'll leave anyway. Huijsen needs to step up.
If we were to get him that's the position i'd prefer to see him play, CB, longterm, only name that i've seen mentioned anywhere that interests me so far. Konate? meh...i'd prefer to keep Raul and Toni before i even begin to consider that guy, and Gravdiol everyday all day before him at CB, i guess TAA gets relegated to the bench in your lineup, never understood what some fans saw in him, far too mediocre as a defender and sporadic as an attacking force
You'd rather keep a player like Asencio before you even start considering a player like Konaté? I think you're doing a very poor job of presenting your (underlying) point, @Digital.
His default stand is majority English/PL related is "overrated". First time seeing someone diss Trent's offensive contribution. Progressive passing and assists are key to offense. Yea, his offense is unique compared to FBs who constantly takes on opposition defender.
JFD: Bernardo Silva, priority Leadership and commitment, that's why Mourinho wants Bernardo Silva Mourinho believes he can be the key figure who can help him a great deal on the pitch, but above all, in the dressing room. Bernardo Silva is close to following in José Mourinho's footsteps to join Real Madrid. Bernardo was considering offers, with Barcelona and Atlético de Madrid the frontrunners. Suddenly, he decided to put everything on hold due to Mourinho's imminent arrival at Real Madrid , the manager's direct request, and the first clear indications that he was counting on him. The situation has completely changed, and the player who was once considered surplus to requirements has now become a top priority. Jorge Mendes knows this, and so does the player himself, who is already in the United States preparing for the World Cup. "I'll go where I'm truly wanted ," he recently declared. He has already received this message, delivered by the new manager of the Real Madrid team. https://as.com/futbol/primera/lider...o-quiere-mourinho-a-bernardo-silva-f202606-n/
🚨 NEW: Manchester City are OPTIMISTIC about renewing Josko Gvardiol. @FabrizioRomano pic.twitter.com/Rwxc4Ze342— Madrid Zone (@theMadridZone) June 11, 2026
A coach that could develop Asencio and Huijsen could create a solid defensive pairing for years to come. Alas, we don't do that here. Bernardo Silva is an exemplary character, but I'm not sure he can just walk in here and transform the locker room. He will still be a new guy, at the end of his career, pretty washed up, so not that great a player anymore to back up his words. I feel it would end up to be the same as the Gundogan at Barca situation.
I think he's supremely talented and people within the football world talk about him like he can walk on water, moreso than the Real Madrid bubble does.
Asencio is not world class. Far from it. If by solid we mean "good player" then sure, but nobody will talk about him as a great player at any point.
Gundogan was pretty good at Barca in 2023-24. He had a noticeable drop off only the following season when he returned to Man City. Gundogan had 5 goals and 9 assists in La Liga as regular starter in a Barca team that struggled offensively that season. I presume Bernardo will be playing deeper role like at City last season if he agrees to join. Or maybe Jude as CM and Bernardo further up. Xavi's team was over dependant on Lewa's goals so when defense started conceding more in 2023-24, they started dropping more points as well. Raphinha under Xavi was scoring 6-7 league goals per season and jumped to 18 league goals in Flick's first season.

I can see Gvardiol renewing, and Paz being turned into a big pot of gold at the end of the rainbow one day.
Interceptions is only one small portion of the big picture. Tchouameni is very good in a team that presses up high, his ability to win the ball back in the opponent's half is excellent. When in mid and low block, he's not nearly as effective. He is not the best at positional awareness, and overly commits to press, leaving space behind him; this is why you'll see he's usually late or in the wrong place quite a bit of times. Fernandes is a premier ground duel winner, and is a better distributor of the ball.
We can just keep him at Como one more year, which is probably the preferred solution for all. If you think his value is high, give him one more season to also play in the CL. I like the Bernardo signing. Can play deep as part of the pivot and can play on the right. Good signing if it's for two years only.
I think Mourinho wants to play a fluid 3-5-2; i.e. activate the RB position to go up the pitch and have 3 CBs sit back so the LB sits back. This is why we went for Dumfries, and this is why we're going for Gvardiol. Gvardiol may start on the "left", but he'll be center most of the time. What about Schlotterbeck? Can he play that role>?
So which one of Vini / Mbappe is going to play left wingback in this system. I'm assuming that Jude or Endrick or the new world cup "star" CF signing would play centrally as second strikers in this set up. None of that excites me, especially not spending a ton of money to have Gvardiol playing on the wing. I know you're saying Gvardiol will in practice be a LCB but who' gonna tell Mbappe he's the new LWB and sell it as "the club knows you prefer to play on the left wing and strings were pulled to make this possible." I would like to try playing Vini and Mbappe in a 442. Unfortunately it takes the two left wing players and puts them centrally without really any other players to play out there.
Victor Munoz could seemingly be a great RW and LW backup option for us. Young, hungry and with room to grow. Hope we can find a way to hold onto him as he could be another Lucas Vasquez type and we need that.
