Still comparing partial seasons to full seasons. Not significant growth, accomplished through expansion, and many franchises well off highs. As pointed out by I think you, the attendance numbers are capped. Where does the league grow from here? Just continue expanding? Charge more? Build new stadiums or expand? Cut players salaries even more? Now do TV viewership. Isnt that where the real money is?
True…. But there’s still all of South America, Africa, and Asia. Japan, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Iran, South Korea, Australia, Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, South Africa, DR Congo, Senegal, Mali, Cameroon, etc. These are good teams!
Epsn article from June 26th states MLS avg attendance this year is up 7% to 23k. Driver of the change is fairly obvious and unclear if they are breaking even on that transaction. It doesn't seem like there is any plan other than stacking Miami (which goes against why many fans claim to like this silly league) to grow the league, let alone the game. Not surprisingly, the presence of Lionel Messi with Inter Miami CF is the primary driver behind the increase. Among the seven teams with double digit increases in average attendance year-over-year not including Miami -- CF Montréal, the Chicago Fire, the LA Galaxy, the New England Revolution, the New York Red Bulls, Orlando City, Sporting Kansas City, and the Vancouver Whitecaps -- six of those teams have hosted Inter Miami. https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_...ssi-boosts-mls-attendance-7-percent-midseason
Abandon All Hope Those Who Enter Here.... It has been reported several places that Germany and the US are the only national teams he would be interested in. Will he come? Who knows but if there is any hint that he might USSF needs to be all over that like a salesman of a fake Rolex in a Chinese (or Venetian) street market.
Anhyhoo, I posted this in another thread: It is not as far fetched as many beleeb. here is why: Klopp would be close to a perfect choice. His system fits our national mentality and doesn't require 2,354 practice sessions for the players to "get it". When you think about it this makes sense for both parties. This would be perfect 2 year job for Klopp who wants a bit of a break from the daily grind of a top level club job, but he gets to manage a team on the up (we hope) in a WC in the host country. And we get a top billing manager for the push to 2026. Would be money well spent no matter the cost. After 2026 he can go back and coach Real Madrid or whomever.
He is an incredibly likeable guy, has worked with CP, and speaks english. Unfortunately, the elephant in the room is does he understand the American soccer culture and MLS? Why do people think Klopp would be a good fit? He knows absolutely nothing about the development system in America, Major League Soccer and most likely had very few Americans on his transfer radar at Liverpool. What would he do? He doesn’t have as much time to develop a system.— Sean Kramer 游紹恩 (@skramerwrites) July 4, 2024
why does he have to 'understand' the american developement system or should we say the lack of one existing? he would be taking over to prepare a team to play in a tournament in less than 2 years. why should he care about what the u14 teams are doing or how they are being developed. his job would be finding basically kids in top two divisions in countries across the world for players he thinks can help the team win in two years.
1. Who gives a F if Klopp understands the MLS or the double-secret development plan. He understands Football, players and winning, and I don't even like him. Give him or other top tier gaffer 2 years while the US searches for the next after. 2. Is there any reason billionaires like Henry, Boehly, Blank, Khan, etc. can't get together and contribute to a huge salary for a one time coach to take advantage of the huge opportunity home offers. 3. It really is not really about a system, especially in the short term, it is about adapting and making the best of the talent you have available and adjusting as a tournament progresses.
man wtf people questioning klopp???? understanding mls?? IRRELEVANT if klopp wants the job...give it to him immediately
We do not have the institutional ambition to get to next level. We sit around waiting on some magic player pool to appear to drag us up - but when that does happen it will be short-lived and not sustainable. Until we hire top talent in as many coaching, scouting and other footie-specific roles as possible we will tread water where we are, with occasional good results and a lot of so-so play. Being a consistent top team in the Argie, Brazil, German, French strata is very hard and takes an organization willing to demand top performance all the time (and great players, of course, but an elite administration and structure will be prepared when the player pool rises to that level.)
A guy like Klopp, if interested, should be handed the keys to the whole program. It should have been done years ago.
No, it hasn't. A reporter mentioned in a chat that he thought Klopp would only coach Germany ... or maybe the US. He did not say that Klopp said this, just that he thought it. I've heard various things about the quality of this reporter, and not too many of them good. Klopp did post a Happy Fourth post in which he did not mention the US team at all but rather that he enjoyed his time in the US. And that's it. Every other "report" is coming from one of those two things repeated over and over. Should the US make a pitch? Sure. But there's not a ton of smoke here. Most of it is generated by people citing each other.
No. I'm not sure how long it will take for people to realize that that kind of job is too big for anyone, but someday someone will. There's a reason successful teams have whole sporting apparati instead of just a head coach lording over all. It's too much work. That was a big part of the idiocy of the Jurgen hire, Furthermore, if someone like Klopp wants to coach a national team, the last thing the coach wants is to be in charge of everything. I'd love his opinion and input, for sure, Klopp doesn't want to run everything. If he takes this job, it's part of the semi-retirement.
Yeah. I did not mean actually do all the jobs. I mean being given the “vision/mission” control. A guy with his footie knowledge and instinct should be given input on whatever he wants input in. It will not always work but do it enough and the base level of your program likely rises with each high level input, on average, as high level talent who are used to top, winning organizations leave their mark.
if its the same old teams though what really is the point. with ggg as the coach are what exactly do you think they are going to change in another match with t&t? Watching pulisic score against honduras isn't going to make me feel better about the 26 wc. it would be much more useful to find useful backups of which this team is sorely lacking.
To reemphasize, I would try to schedule non-international date friendlies in at least 4 windows (1. December, 2. January/February, 3. April, 4. August/September) as a means to introduce new players to the coach and staff. Personally, I would try to make it almost an u23 camp, sprinkled with a few players who are still at a good age for 2026, and use this as a way to reward promising players in MLS, and other promising YA’s who are close to first team minutes, but not quite there yet. Example roster: GK Schulte, Celentano, Brady (Rick) RB Jones, Harriel (Davis) CB Zimmerman, Neal (Campbell) CB Robinson, Sands (Murphy) LB Wiley, Tolkin (Padelford) M6 Edelman, Flach (Soma) M8 McGlynn, Bassett (Amaya) RM Cremaschi, Luna (Q. Sullivan) AM Mihailovic, Esmir (Ferreira) LM Gutierrez, Campbell (Tsakiris) FW McGuire, Imasuen (Figueroa) Also, I would try to sneak in a B team / u23 team even post Olympics during international windows in order to introduce YA players who are just a little bit off from the first team. Even if we could make it 1 game in between games. Something where our staff is still working with the guys who are right outside on the fringe. Example roster: GK Slonina, Kochen, Freese (Eyestone) RB Fossey, Reynolds (Tanton, Harangi) CB McKenzie, Dietz (Banks) CB Trusty, Brooks (Dettoni) LB Lund, Gomez (Bello, Brown) MF Tessmann, Maloney (Bassett) MF Busio, Morris (McGlynn) RM Booth, Zendejas (Yow) AM P. Aaronson, Puktsas (Cremaschi) LM Paredes, Cowell (Sabbi) FW Vazquez, Pefok (Downs)
That #1 is a favorite xenophobic, MLS bull---- argument that's been trotted out before every hire to ensure the hire is domestic based (MLS origins) and American and its total horse ---- and always has been.
The issue with Klinsmann was in order to hire him at the time we needed to give him a big salary. In order to justify that salary (way outside the previous scope of USMNT salary), he also needed to take on the technical director duties. In that Ringer article about the 2018 cycle, there were comments made about how he'd started completely ignoring his technical director duties. Leaving those for other administrators with the USSF, who weren't as qualified to make those decisions. The technical director role is a big job. Let's not overcomplicate things.
You can definitely get some interesting home and homes with CAF and to a lesser extent with the AFC, I'm not really sure why we don't pursue more with CAF, wonder if it's a money issue.
The biggest issue with this is there aren't that many guys who are on the fringes and having them play against age group guys isn't going to show what they need to show to see if they can help the usmnt in 26. alot of those guys aren't even on the fringe so its a waste of time. the second biggest issue is that their clubs aren't going to allow it.
