I hope it's not Toledo. I read his bio last year, and when asked where his favorite place to officiate was, he said "HDC. I love LA. It's my home." I really think there should be some rule of not letting officials officiate games in which the team from their home town is playing, weather they're a fan of said team or not.
It's a personal achievement, not a club award though. When you look at the history books, they don't say "week x goal of the week winner was chicago". But this is all besides the point that McBride's goal was superior and should have won. The fact that he was an American hero in the world of soccer has nothing to do with that, but should just add some clarity to the thinking of non-Fire fans. To be fair, even as a Sounder fan the ballot-stuffing bots for GOTW is getting annoying. I know the award doesn't mean anything, but it would be nice to see it actually go to, you know, the best goal of each week haha. I absolutely hate the Fire, so don't mistake this for me defending them. I do, however, love and respect McBride and thus understand the angle of this thread. McBride was Donovan before Donovan was even Donovan. I agree; not that there will be bias from the ref, but why tempt fate? Why give any ammo to the visiting team? Just play it safe and go with someone not from the area. The NFL has been dealing with this lately; apparently there are a lot of refs from Pittsburgh (no I'm not even kidding). The Toledo post on the other page was about the first (home) leg though - and the ref ended up being Salazar. I don't know who the ref will be this match. I don't think we know it will be Toledo. As long as it's not the tool shed that was reffing the Houston match...
THANK YOU! Finally someone here has some sense. The ballot stuffing is getting old and McBride deserved it. Although I doubt he is going to lose much sleep for not getting it but it would've been a nice deserved farewell for him.
The argument about ballot stuffing and whether it's right or not is ridiculous. The simple fact is, GOTW in 2010 was deliberately set up as a bone thrown to teams with a large fan base. Ballot stuffing was the intention. If that isn't true then MLS is run by idiots. Simple as.
Is that Sounder on Sounder love? Yes, I don't understand. Of course, my comment was directed at the guy puffing out his chest over his love of "club" who has three "club" listed in his profile. Maybe he's a Mormon.
What part of "He's a Chicago player" do you not understand? This wasn't about country, it was about provincialism. Fixed that for you.
I hate it when someone goes on a board and says one goal 'deserved it" or was "better" than the one that won; it is a subjective vote and just because your arrogant arse thinks it was best does not make it a fact. Some people like power shots from distance, some people like skill shots inside a crowded box, and some just like what their team does but don't try to say that because you believe one shot was the best that that makes it the shot that deserved to win, you just sound like a stupid little child.
Wow, did you miss the point of my original post. I discounted the importance generally of this "award" for many of the reasons you mention. I said "was it the best? I don't know." So before you call someone a "stupid little child" learn how to read, or better yet, learn how to comprehend.
Did I quote you and say I was directing my comment at you? NO! It was a general statement about people who make these claims and was not directed toward you. Maybe there is a reason you took it personally? Maybe you are one of those arrogant stupid little children who think the world revolves around them. Maybe you should learn how to read or maybe you should get out of your mom's basement.
I started the thread, so the "general statement" seemed as if it might be directed at me. No worries. You've got some issues.
Like he said, "one of those arrogant stupid little children who think the world revolves around them." Seems like the perfect definition of a Fire fan to me.
