About 2 weeks ago, I really thought Lumpy was going to win this. Then, momentum seemed to swing heavily towards Harris. Ally this to the Nuremberg rally and I was reasonably convinced that Harris had this.

I’m going to be very interested to read an analysis of this race in the next few weeks. But, yeah, President Lumpy. Again.

looks like we are shackled with four more years of this idiot. I'm wavering on the issue of why???
Apparently more than 50% of the US populace thinks this numbskull is going to do, what? Solve their plight? Good luck with that nonsense...

I'd laugh at it, if it wasn't so damaging to the country I was born in

I’ll never understand the why either, I just don’t get it. But he’s going to cause some damage in the next few years.

I'm having a lot of difficulty processing this.

I feel so sorry for the good people of the USA who have fought like hell to prevent him from getting back into power. God only knows how your lives will change, now and possibly for years into the future affecting your families.

And of course the impact on the rest of the world will be huge and I can't see it being positive.

God Help America. God Help Us All.

I fear for our democracy. They have complete control of congress and SC - our country will likely never be the same again...and not for the better.

I probably need to stop being a Doomsday Mary or whatever...I'll feel better when OSU wins the NC and Pool sweep the PL and CL. :)

This was a knowing vote. In ‘16 he was an unknown quantity, perhaps a breath of fresh air and we had 4 years to get to know him. Then another 4 years in opposition. And now he’s voted in? There can be no one who will be able to say, “I didn’t know”. It was a conscious, deliberate act, voting for him.

Now watch huge swathes of the media (Times, Post, etc.) sane-wash him for the next 4 years (what he really meant to say was…) while be blithely frees January 6th people and that will be the least of his buddy crimes. But no one will be able to say, “I didn’t know”.

Like others, I'm having a really hard time processing this and for the sake of my mental health will try to step away from US politics for a while - if I can, in Canada it's almos impossible unless you simply don't consume any media at all.

    anyhow, one point ....

I really hope people don't make the mistake of thinking this is about Trump himself. It runs FAR deeper than that, and he's just been the useful idiot for the vicious misogynistic racist bastards behind him.

He could die tomorrow - or decide to ******** off as soon as his legal woes are fixed - but it would do nothing to stop the ripping apart of the US political and judicial system for generations to come.

    Project 2025 is real.

Two examples - he's talked about Musk being assigned to "make the government efficient" and putting RFK in charge of health and things like the CDC. We don't know right now if he will do either of those but don't be surprised if he does.

Think about how the health of all Americans will be affected (and the affect for the whole world if vaccine development is slowed or hindered).

Think about the anti-worker and anti-union measures that will be introduced.

There are a lot more examples you can come up with in just about any sphere of government influence.

Looks like it went like this:

    1. Uneducated men of all persuasions - white, black, latino - either love his act of being a tough guy and/or couple it with - sorry no black woman is going to rule me.
    2. Scared everyone - especially in places it wasn't even an issue - that the "migrants" are coming for you (note - my brother said this is a real issue in the cities - they are dirty and feel unsafe)
    3. Biden - Harris - can't be decoupled. His policies are her policies. Including the debacle in the Middle East.
    4. Economy - re inflation - that's a real one - where no one around the world wasn't affected. Not the Dems fault. But guess what - an easy win for Lumpy.
    5. People again lied about their vote - the shy republicans very much exist, the ones that can't not vote the way Bubba tells them to vote, and the way that Jeeebus tells them.
    6. Hard left policies annoying people - again just a small example - my brother's 12 person office in NYC must have a gender neutral bathroom or face a decent fine. His office in Charlotte - 80+ people - no such requirement.

    - Finally - she wasn't a great candidate the first time around - but I'll say she did what she could here in such a short time.

    It's a depressing read.

    Here we go...

In the end it was a repeat of the same old story (with a twist): It's the economy (cost of living), stupid (not the Dems fault but the incumbent owns it). The twist is immigration (whatever your views about helping immigrants it has not been well handled).

It's not all bad news. At least we won't have to listen to whining about rigged elections.

Now Trump will fix everything and no one has ever seen how fast he will can do it.

Ukraine war - over in 24 hrs , no problem.

Gaza and the middle east issues , no problem .

Saving the cats and dogs in Ohio , a priority no doubt

Reading that a lot Dems (maybe some republicans) - didn't vote because they felt that both choices were bad and then some used the policies of the Dems as a further excuse.

Is there even a viable democratic candidate for next election cycle?

Presumably that person will go against Shady Vance - unless Trump gets his way.

    Newsom I imagine?

I think Mayor Pete is exceptional but can't see the D's rolling the dice so clearly again.

Knowing what I already know about Xn nationalism, Project 2025, climate change and the current state of the biosphere, I am overwhelmed by despair today. Billions of people worldwide will be adversely impacted by this election result. Billions.

Newsom may be high profile, but he's got the California Problem, that contributed to Harris's downfall. Like it or not, a lot of people in the U.S. consider it a foreign country. The Dems have other governors that could be pretty viable candidates though - Beshear (KY); Whitmer (MI); Cooper (NC); Shapiro (PA); Evers (WI) come to mind.

I think Newsom is hated - would be hated around the country. at least outwardly it doesn't even seem like he's popular in CA (despite being the Gov).

Feels like Harris made the right call with Walz - but might have needed it to be Shapiro to help the PA issue - though it seems like she wasn't going to overcome those issues in MI or WI.

To feel sorry for people or to wish one were an Olympian with a proverbial mallet with which to assuage their utter stupidity...

    https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cwyg5jdgzy1o
    from that article-
    This---- Dumbness is incredible

‘With his grandkids, I see the softer side’
Brooke Riske was not always a Trump voter.

In 2016, unimpressed by Trump or Hillary Clinton, she voted for a third-party candidate. But the Covid-19 pandemic changed her mind.

“Our government has become too active in our lives,” said the 38-year-old educator from Virginia.

During the uncertainty of Covid, said Ms Riske, Trump was a steady presence. And he cared about the country and wanted to improve it, she said.

It was not just his policies she admired, it was also the person. Watching him in Instagram videos and podcast interviews, she said she liked what she saw and heard.

“The times where he’s interacting with his grandkids I see the softer side,” she said.

“He kept our country very peaceful for several years, I don’t think a person is capable of that unless they have diplomacy, humanness and kindness in them.”

Ms Riske said she knew that view was at odds with how some others saw Trump, but she didn't trust how the media portrayed him.

“I've just accepted him for who he is.”

So disappointing. There will be lots of reasons thrown around as to why, but ultimately its seems most of the population believed the economy was bad despite all the evidence to the contrary and the near constant barge of Ads where Kamala was saying she supported tax payer gender reassignment surgery for prisoners. That's just simply a position even those who have empathy for trans people have a hard time defending and Trump spent more on those ads than any other issue.
