Look at how the results map out in terms of the league placings of the teams. Oviedo have beaten the bottom 10 clubs, 30 of their 44 points coming from the games against the worst teams.
Against the top 9 then just 14 points, 4 wins 2 Draws and 3 losses.
Not very good when you consider there is no automatic promotion, to go up you have to beat the 2nd/3rd/4th placed teams in another group. If we can't get the results against the top 6 or 7 it doesn't bode well.

On a positive note 6 of our games against the top 7 have been away matches so second half of the season they will be home matches. Oviedo will do a lot better against the top teams at home, they've only dropped 2 points in the 9 home games so far.

    ---

Lobo Carrasco has spoken about the season so far. He feels the team took along time to settle, that upto November there were players in the squad that hadn't convinced him that they had the character to be at club. Since then he feels the squad have gelled as a unit and that they have evolved with a settled team developing. in the last month or two the manager feels the team has really stepped up a gear in training and on the pitch. His opinions of this division is that he is suprised at the quality of his opposition coaches, they are tactically aware and carefully plan their tactics when facing Oviedo.

    2nd half of season fixtures:

    Match 20 .. 13/01/2008 .. ( Home ) .. Colloto
    Match 21 .. 20/01/2008 .. ( Away ) .. Universidad
    Match 22 .. 27/01/2008 .. ( Home ) .. Ribadesella
    Match 23 .. 03/02/2008 .. ( Away ) .. Sporting Gijon B
    Match 24 .. 10/02/2008 .. ( Home ) .. Real Aviles Ind.
    Match 25 .. 17/02/2008 .. ( Away ) .. Siero
    Match 26 .. 24/02/2008 .. ( Home ) .. Lealtad
    Match 27 .. 02/03/2008 .. ( Away ) .. Langreo
    Match 28 .. 09/03/2008 .. ( Home ) .. Navarro
    Match 29 .. 16/03/2008 .. ( Away ) .. Astur
    Match 30 .. 23/03/2008 .. ( Home ) .. Llanes
    Match 31 .. 30/03/2008 .. ( Away ) .. Condal
    Match 32 .. 06/04/2008 .. ( Home ) .. Union Ceares
    Match 33 .. 13/04/2008 .. ( Away ) .. Candas
    Match 34 .. 20/04/2008 .. ( Home ) .. Caudal
    Match 35 .. 27/04/2008 .. ( Away ) .. Hispano
    Match 36 .. 04/05/2008 .. ( Home ) .. Tuilla
    Match 37 .. 11/05/2008 .. ( Away ) .. Real Tapia
    Match 38 .. 18/05/2008 .. ( Home ) .. Cudillero

You look at the first 7 home fixtures with the exception of maybe Lealtad should all be wins. The last 3 home ties are against play-off contendors.
2 tough away matches to start off with but then the away ties all look winable.
90 points shouldn't be out of the reach of this team with some luck with injuries.

    Iker LASARTE Herrero -- 1530 -- 1 - 1530.00

Notice the stat that forward Stefan scores once every 698 minutes, he's got as many yellow cards as goals! His fellow forward Matias is worse, no goals in 458 minutes, and a yellow card to boot too! It makes the decision not to give Armando Quesada a start until match 16 all the more baffling, he'd only played 63 minutes in those first 15 matches, and scored a goal too!
Hopefully the midfield and Meijide continue to chip in with goals rather than depending so much on Diego Cerveros' goals in the first third of the season.

Next Match (Match 20) Sunday 13th January

    (home) Sociedad Deportiva Colloto

Position: 20th (last) 9 points - rock bottom

    Away form: 17th - 9 matches 1 win (Hispano) 2 draws 6 defeats Goals; For 7, against 20.

History: 8 seasons (95-96 through to 02-03) in Tercera highest 7th 2001-02. First season back in Tercera since relegation in 2003.

Other than first match of season (2-0 away win to Oviedo) sides never faced each other in a competitive match.

    ----

    (home) v Colloto

So a home banker - dead cert win, anything other than a comprehensive win would be disappointing. The visiting team is worse than Hispano (we beat Hispano 10-0) and considerably worse than Astur (7-0 win). An Oviedo team on top form could get in double figures again. An Oviedo team continuing the form of last two matches will get a positive result but not the goal feast that is probably needed just to boost the confidence before a few tough(ish) matches.

Only slight problem for Oviedo - defence. Left back Iker Lasarte serves a suspension for receiving 5 yellow cards. Centre backs Bravo and Carmona both miss the match through injury so the defence will have to be completely refashioned. Lucas may return after missing the last match through suspension but like Hispano Carrasco may decide to go with 3 at the back and go on an all out offensive. Personnel problems may force his hand but he has Dani Garcia, Jose Luis, Lucas, Meijide and Santos available so could easily play a flat back 4 if he decides to stick with his now favoured 4-4-2 formation.

Prediction: 5-0 to Oviedo with Diego Cervero and Armando Quesada back on the goal trail.

    Other fixtures:

    Cudillero (2nd) v Universidad (6th)
    Tuilla (3rd) v Sporting Gijon "B" (9th)
    Candas (13th) v Lealtad (4th)
    Caudal (5th) v Siero (14th)

Probable wins for the two home sides would be severe knock backs to Gijon and Universidad who both have to start winning soon to have any hope of reaching play-offs. Universidad lose then they're 10 points off Cudillero and 15 off Oviedo. Lealtad and Caudal have a matches against midtable opposition but should be too good for them, both should get easy wins on current form. Any team outside the top 5 who doesn't win this weekend could see the play-offs running away from them.

Who can predict Tinkermans’ team selections? Armando dropped for that prolific marksman Stefan. Stefan is a good player but he just doesn’t score, Armando Quesada does. Play Cervero and Armando upfront, as they showed 2nd half of last season at Lealtad, and you have almost certainly the best strikeforce at Tercera level. After ommiting Armando from the starting XI for first 15 matches you would have thought Carrasco would learn from his mistakes.

Oh well a 3-0 win and with Cudillero drawing against Universidad, Oviedo move further ahead in the Championship race. The frustrating thing is the whole 10 month season is essentially just a preparation for the 4 play-off matches and as soon as things start to be settling nicely everything gets thrown up in the air. Armando and Cervero upfront should be the selections (injuries permitting) who start the next 18 matches. Stefan should learn his trade coming off bench watching and learning from 2 men who have scored heaps of goals at this level.

Other selection oddities, both Falo and Centron dropped from midfield to defence when against inferior opposition why not keep players in their favoured positions and fill vacant spaces (Bravo injured Lasarte suspended) with squad members such as Dani Garcia and Roberto Santos. Will Santos ever get that elusive first start? You’d have thought against the divisions whipping boys it was now or never. He did get his longest match time so far a whole 32 minutes as a substitute.

Positives, Cervero got back on goal trail and stefan got his second goal of the season and the team kept a clean sheet. It's too easy to say it's the result that matters but ultimately this team has to show that it can play against the better sides. 3 poor performances in a row and now it is Universidad away, hopefully Bravo returns from injury and we have a strong back 4 for the match (Lucas,Meijide,Bravo & Lasarte). We need 3 or 4 matches in a row with a consistant team selection so that we start performing against the top 5 or 6 in this division. We need to cut out sloppy goals and hap-hazard defending against the top teams and that has to start now. Univeridad (a) Gijon "B" (a) and Lealtad (h) win those 3 upcoming fixtures and the Championship is in the bag.

Tuilla upto 2nd beating the hapless Sporting "B" who seem to be faiding fast - 2 points in 5 games - shame!
Cudillero draw and drop 2 places, Lealtad extend run to 15 games unbeaten and go upto 3rd.
Terrible result for Caudal drawing at home to Siero.
Worst result of day Llanes losing at home to Astur, had the chance with a win to go up 2 places to 6th, but blew it.

    Oviedo upcoming fixtures:
    Match 21 .. 20/01/2008 .. ( Away ) .. Universidad (6th)
    Match 22 .. 27/01/2008 .. ( Home ) .. Ribadesella (12th)
    Match 23 .. 03/02/2008 .. ( Away ) .. Sporting Gijon B (10th)

A win next weekend could end Universidads Play-off hopes likewise 3 weeks time Sporting B. By that stage the top 4 or 5 could very likely have broken away from the rest of the sides.

Lealtad (3rd) v Caudal (5th) pick of next weeks matches.

    Spanish League Structure

Premier League (Primera Liga) - 1 division = 20 teams.
    |
Second Division (Segunda División) - 1 division = 22 teams.
    |
    Second "B" Division (Segunda División B) - 4 divisions x 20 teams.
    |
Third Division (Tercera División) - 18 divisions x 20 teams.

There is no automatic promotion from the 18 Tercera groups upto Segunda "B" you have the Play-off system

Segunda "B" is made up of 4 divisions, 4 teams go down automatically (16 teams) and there is a Play-off between the teams 5th from bottom to make 18 teams relegated.

The Tercera Play-Offs have 18 groups each with 4 teams and each with 1 promotion place.

The groups are made up of a 1st placed team a 2nd 3rd and 4th all from different divisions. (eg Oviedo wouldn't face anyone from their Tercera group - Group 2)

If you finish top of you group you avoid playing another 1st placed side.

First matches: 1st v 4th and 2nd v 3rd over 2 legs (home and away), winners play 2 leg Final (home and away).

    Tercera Play-offs

Looking at teams in and around 4th place currently:

Amurrrio (7th Group 4) and Alfaro (4th Group 16) both got relegated along with Oviedo and Universidad last year from segunda "B". Diego Meijides' old club Torreviega (4th Group 6) are a team with a large English following down on south coast, and i happen to know one supporter. Our lucky team Real Avila (5th Group 8) have been beaten last 2 times in Play-offs could be potential opposition too. Then Barcelona "B" (2nd in Group 5) could be a formidable opponent.

    Highest Points totals:

    (1)... Ejea (1st Group 17) ......57 points / 22 matches
    (2)... Mirandes (1st Grp 8) ....54 / 20
    (3)... Roquetas (1st Grp 9) ...53 / 21
    (4)... A C Lorqui (1st Grp 13) ..52 / 20
    (5)... Barbastro (2nd Grp 17) ..51 / 22
    (6)... Gimnastic (1st Grp 3) ...50 / 20
    (7)... Toledo (1st Grp 18)...... 49 / 20
    (8)... Teruel (3rd Grp 17) ......49 / 22
    (9)... R Oviedo (1st Grp 2).... 47 / 20
    (10).. Sant Andreu (1st G 5) . 47 / 22

    Top Goalscorers ("Pichchi")

(1)... Diego Gomez (Ejea) 25 goals
    (2)... Linares (Balastro) 19
    (3)... Copito (Sangonera) 18
(4)... Diego Cervero (Real Oviedo) 17
    ....... Pacheta (ADF Logrones) 17
    (5)... Jurado (Calasparra) 16
    (6)... Quino (Reocin) 15
    ....... Sergio Ruiz (Bezana) 15
    ....... Gustavo (R Avila) 15
    ....... Morales (Villanueva) 15

    Top Goalscorers (Team)

    (1)... Escobedo (2nd Grp 3) 60 goals
    (2)... Barbastro (2nd Grp 17) 58
    (3)... Ejea (1st Grp 17) 57
    (4)... Gimnastica (1st Grp 3) 56
    (5)... Racing "B" (3rd Grp 3) 55
    (6)... Roquetas (1st Grp 9) 53
    ....... ADF Logrones (1st Grp 16) 53
    (8)... Teruel (3rd Grp 17) 49
    (9)... Real Oviedo (1st Grp 2) 48

These stats put the current position into perspective. Real Oviedo are the largest team in the Tercera, they have the biggest support the largest stadium probably the best training facilities too, but they aren't best on the field. They might be the best team in Asturias but at present that title is diminished with the very poor standard. Real Oviedo are playing teams that 5 years ago their "B" team was beating easily (Oviedo "B" finished 4th in 2002-03 with a young Diego Cervero upfront). Vast improvement is needed second half of the season. Yes carrying on as we have done so far will almost certainly bring the championship and probably a Play-off win too. But to make promotion more certain cut out the tinkering and get a settled side. We should be building towards a storming finish getting some momentum so that we steamroll whoever we face in the play-offs. We could concievably face one of the high scoring teams in Group 3 or 17 and be blown away like Lealtad Gijon "B" and Caudal were last season, it just takes a bit of bad luck and opponets on the top of their game and the whole season can go down the pan. The defence needs to gell so that silly mistakes are cut out now, that should be Carrascos chief mission. Provide the service to Cervero and Armando and 90 points should be a feasable target followed up by a storming Play-Off victory too.

Tough match that Real Oviedo should win, have to win to afirm their position as the top team in the group and to end Universidads hopes to reach Play-offs.

Injuries again mean centre of defence a problem, who will partner Meijide? Falo, Lucas Iglesias??? will Armando Quesada start or Stefan? with Lobo Carrasco in charge anyones guess.

    Match 21: Sunday 21st January

    Universidad 3-2 Real Oviedo

    Real Oviedo: 4-2-3-1 (double pivote)

    GK Aulestia,

RB Dani García (José Luis, min. 67),
    CB Lucas,
    CB Meijide,
    LB Lasarte,

    DM Falo,
    DM Curro,

    RM Villanueva,
AM Jon Carrera (Armando, min. 67),
    LM Stefan (Jaime, min. 59)

    CF Cervero.

    Goals:

    1-0. Roberto (19m).

    2-0. Kike (49m).

    2-1. Jon Carrera (56m).

    3-1. Xose (69m).

    3-2. Armando (89m).

So a return to the double pivot system with Cervero up front on his own. Armando Quesada again on bench with Jon Carrera playing the attacking role with Curro and Falo playing just in front of the defence.

Against a top 6 side again the defence had a shocker. To go into the Play-offs with any great confidence signings have to be made before the transfer window closes on 31st January, and a settled team has to be bedded in.

(Oviedin.com website) "Nightmare in San Gregorio" (Universidas' ground) - a team without ideas lost to a side who could and should have won by alot more than a single goal. The supporters are fed up with Carrascos poetic musings before and after matches, they want performances, they want to have faith that in segunda B next year (hopefully) they'll be able to compete. Except for 10 minutes in the second half when Oviedo were already 0-2 down the side was pitifull. To play Curro so deep when after Cervero he's the teams main goalscoring poacher is absurd. The system Carrasco started with played into the hands of Universidad who had more shape and organisation and continually threatened the visitors goal with cahnce after chance falling to them.
There was a little hope in the 2nd Half when Jon Carrera scored to make it 1-2 but rather than Oviedo kick on and look for an equaliser Universidad were able to get back into the game and dominate. Carrasco again went from the sublime to the ridiculous by taking off his best player Carrera and bringing on his neglected striker and replacing right back for right back. Carrasco had said that he knew what his best team was from November onwards, ie 4-4-2 with both Jose Luis and Armanado Quesada both starting, strange that now he's decided to play at right back a player he had decided to demote to the B side just 2 weeks ago.

So who can come in? Mario Prieto move gone cold as has Cristian too, rumour that former Oviedo striker Dario Aliaga maybe available if he can get out of his current club contract. All 3 whould be welcome signings but they don't play in the positions that Oviedo need new recruits. Great to have another quality striker but we need wingers, great to have another central midfielder but we have atleast 3 quality players (at this level) in that position already in the squad.

Shocking result and even worse performance. Bravo needs to come back and stay fit. Carrasco has to stick with 4-4-2 and sign players to fit in with that formation, to make the team better. With crowds dwindling something has to be done to make promotion as certain as is humanly possible.

    Universidad…. 3-2 …. Real Oviedo

    Sporting B…… 3-1 ….Real Tapia
    Real Aviles …. 1-1 ….Tuilla
    Astur………… 2-0 ….Condal
    Ribadesella…. 2-0 ….Cudillero

So Cudillero lost and Tuilla drew so the defeat doesn't have too much significance other than seeing the team in 2nd place win. Lealtad could be a big danger (after beating 5th placed Caudal), only 4 points behind Oviedo now, and a 15 game unbeaten run goes on and on. The match against the sides in a few weeks time could take on a massive significance. Lealtad have been played 3 times so far this season and they are unbeaten, they have already beaten Real Oviedo twice (including Oviedos' only defeat this season at the Carlos Tartiere in the Confederation Cup). Continue the poor form and lose to them and the championship may not be the walk that a few weeks ago seemed a certainty. 2nd place would be unthinkable.

Next match : (home) to Ribadesella – Sunday 27th January.

    Ribadesella Club de Fútbol

    History:

Just 1 season in Segunda “B”.

18 seasons in Tercera, last 6 seasons best in clubs history.

    2006-07 - 3ª División - 7º

    2005-06 - 3ª División - 3º

    2004-05 - 3ª División - 2º

    2003-04 - 3ª División - 9º

    2002-03 - 2ª División B - 20º

    2001-02 - 3ª División - 4º

    Top Goalscorers:

    6 Castañón, 5 Omar, 4 Manolo, 3 Piero.

Goalkeeper Ramón Ruiz is an outsider for the Zamora title (25 goals conceded in 20 games).

    Form:

    Currently 11th with 29 points.

Last match beat 4th placed Cudillero 2-0 at home

    away form: 12th RIBADESELLA 11matches 13points 3wins 4draws 4defeats goals for/against 11/13

    away record:
    Match 2 L Cudillero 1 - 0 Ribadesella
    Match 4 L Universidad Oviedo 2-1 Ribadesella
    Match 5 D Colloto 1-1 Ribadesella
Match 7 D Real Aviles Ind. 1-1 Ribadesella
    Match 9 L Lealtad 1 - 0 Ribadesella
    Match 11 D Navarro 1-1 Ribadesella
    Match 13 D Llanes 1-1 Ribadesella
    Match 15 W Union Ceares 1-2 Ribadesella
    Match 17 W Caudal 0 - 1 Ribadesella
    Match 19 L Tuilla 4-1 Ribadesella
    Match 20 W Real Tapia 0-2 Ribadesella

Away form poor overall but 3 wins away in last 4 matches shows that they are not to be taken lightly.

You would say Ribadesella have underperformed so far this season but the last couple of months they seemed to have turned the corner and are now producing results.

Oviedo only won 1-0 away at Ribadesella, so on current form could be very difficult home match.

    Week 22 fixtures:

    Real Oviedo (1st) - Ribadesella (11th)
    Condal (17th) - Llanes (8th)
    Union Ceares (12th) - Astur (16th)
    Candas (15th) - Navarro (14th)
    Caudal (5th) - Langreo (9th)
    Hispano (19th) - Lealtad (2nd)
    Tuilla (3rd) - Siero (13th)
Real Tapia (18th) - Real Aviles Ind (7th)
    Cudillero (4th) - Sporting B (10th)
    Universidad (7th) - Colloto(20th)

    Predictions:

Tuila and Lealtad will both win, anything else especially for Lealtad would be a major shock.
Cudillero seemed to have hit some poor form just as Sporting ”B” who had a disasterous December seem to be finding their form so chance of a draw maybe even an away win. Universidad and Caudal should both win so that 4th play off place may not be a forgone conclusion. Aviles (4 wins in 7) have come from midtable obscurity to also challenge for that last Play-off spot, they should easily win too. The teams from 4th down to 8th could really begin to bunch up, competing for the Play-offs.

Anything other than a home win for Oviedo will see the lead at the top disappear. Hopefully Carrasco has a full squad to choose from and picks the right team.

Goals: Jon Carrera (56m), Armando (89m).

Considering Armando Quesadas' score the fact Stefan has only got 51 votes (getting less than a sixth of Armandos' who was a sub) shows the level of support and lack of support amongst the fans for the 2 players.

    Carrasco has his favorate and sticking by him seems to be a major bone of contention amongst fans. The players stats conflict slightly;

    Stefan
    823 mins on pitch - 9 starts (7 subs) 2 goals - 411 minutes per goal
    Armando Quesada
    450 mins on pitch - 4 starts (7 subs) 5 goals - 90 minutes per goal

Good news on a number of fronts:

Pablo Naredo has been selected to play for the Spanish under 17s.
The 17 year old midfielder has trained a number of times with the first team and has once made the subs bench (for the 10-0 win at home to Hispano - unused sub).

Experianced midfielder Mario Prieto is still a possible signing, just trying to tie up lose ends with his club Melilla, who had hoped to keep him by offering him a new contract. It sounds like the Asturian player wants to end his career back home after lately playing in the Canary Islands and the African mainland (Melilla - a Spanish military base on the north Moroccan coast) Prieto has a clause in his contract allowing him to leave it's just down to the money as with most football transfers.

    ---

    Best of all....

Oviedo have signed a new striker, their second January signing.

    PACHETA

    Name: Héctor Rojo Carrasco
Date of birth: 9-9-81 (26 years old)
Place of birth: Salas de los Infantes (Burgos)

    Clubs:
    Salas (98-99)
    Norma San Leonardo (99-00)
    Calahorra (00-01)
    Numancia B (01-02)
    Logroñés (02-03)
    Osasuna B (03)
    Mutilvera (03-04)
    Burgos (04-05)
    Norma San Leonardo (06-07)
    Fundación Logroñés (07-08)

Signed from Fundación Logroñés, Top of Tercera Group 16.
Currently top scorer in that group with 17 goals, the same number as Cervero.

Sounds like he could be a very good signing, obviously with that number of goals to his name in half a season.

    ---

    and some bad news

A number of injuries, Stefan is out of Sundays game along with Carmona, Bravo, Centrón and Matías.

Pacheta presented as an Oviedo player at a press conference today.
He's described as a strong pacey central striker who's good in the air who can also play as a right winger too. Presumably he's signed as a partner to Cervero (4-4-2 formation) not as a right winger in Carrascos favoured formation (4-2-3-1).
Pacheta has played for a side from Asturias before, for Marino in 2005 where a terrible knee injury ruined his time there.

    official site:
    http://www.realoviedo.es/weboficial/index.asp?Pagina=vernoticia&IdNoticia=1931

    ------

Carrasco orgainised a training match principally to test Bravos' fitness:

A Team: Iván; José Luis, Diego Meijide, Lucas Iglesias, Iker Lasarte; Anibal, Davo, Roberto Santos; Bruno, Diego Cervero, Sergio Villanueva.

B Team: Auelstia; Dani García, Bravo, Adrián, Ernesto (Nico); Jon Carrera, Falo, Curro; Jaime, Armando, Santi.

Result: 3-3, Bruno, Iker and Lucas Igelsias scoring for the A Team, Curro and Armando (2) for the B Team.

A number of players from the youth team trained with the full squad plus central defender Adrián from Vetusta (Oviedo B).

    ------

Central defender Bravo played in above match on Friday but isn’t thought to be fit enough to play against Ribadesella. Other key injury - left sided midfielder Centron. Also out Strikers Stefan and Matias along with centre back Carmona and a possible further absentee full-back Dani Garcia who missed the the last training session through injury.

    ------

Oviedo have taken Johann Loe on trial from Onteniente of Segunda B. The French forward is training with Oviedo this coming week so that the coaching staff can assess his ability. He is currently out of favour at the relegation threatened club.

    Match 22: Sunday 27th January 2008

    Real Oviedo 1-1 Ribadesella

    Real Oviedo 4-3-2-1

    GK Aulestia

    RB L.Iglesias
    CB Falo
    CB Meijide
    LB Lasarte

    CM Jon Carrera (Jaime 49m)
    CM José Luis
    CM Curro

    LM Sergio Villanueva
    RM Bruno (Santos 76m)

    CF Diego Cervero (Armando 80m)

    Goals:
    1-0 Villanueva (15m)
    1-1 Castañon (38m)

    Team selection:
Bravo failed a late fitness test after being set to play.
So rather than simply play Jose Luis at right back and Lucas Iglesias in the centre of defence, (each players preferred positions) Carrasco decides again to move Falo from midfield to defence and pick Jose Luis as a holding midfielder with Lucas at right back. Absolutely bewildering thing though is that in a match that had to be won and convincingly Carrasco decided to play the same defensive tactics as last week (away to Universidad). Ribadesella are no mugs but they should be well beaten at home. We play an in form team with our hands tied behind our backs constricted by a baffling formation that plays not to our strengths but our weaknesses. The squad selection as usual mystifies but this match more than usual, when there are simple solutions to replace one injury Carrasco always seems to take the difficult option, moving several players out of position. Stefan missed the game through injury and with new signing Pacheta watching from the stands there was only one sensible pick, Armando Quesada up front with Diego Cervero.
How dare you think such a thing, when you have a master tactician as manager you have to think outside the box. You need to win to restore confidence so why play an attacking formation, lets be cagey and play cat and mouse, why not bore the opposition to death and then hit them when they’re about to nod off! (Problem is the fans are bored too and start to vote with their feet and stay away.)
So Bruno (primarily a striker) has a rare start coming in as a right winger, and our right winger Sergio Villanueva moves to the left wing. How many players playing out of position is that now? Presumably next week Aulestia is going to play up front with Cervero in goal as a cunning plan to out fox the opposition. A cunning plan is only cunning if your tinkering results in a positive result if you fall flat on you face you are not a great manager but an absolute arse. Carrasco is an arse!

Okay so the match, what can you say – poor very poor, the worst result of the season and one of the worst performsnces. Ribasedella are in good form but they are a mid table team with little or no chance of the play-offs, they should be cannon fodder for Oviedo at home.

    First half:
Both sides had chances, Oviedo went ahead but failed to push on playing far too defensively when they have an error prone defensive unit. Play to your strengths and attack if you score 4 it doesn’t then matter if you leak a couple. Completely predictably Ribadesella score from a corner with Aulestia at fault. Ribadesella had another good chance just before the break with our defence all at sea and should have made it 1-2.

    Second half:
Oviedo if possible were even worse when the match resumed. A Ribadesella forward had a one on one with our keeper only to hit the post with the goal at his mercy. Oviedo had one real chance in the next half an hour with Bruno making a complete hash of a decent opportunity. 80th minute Carrasco decided to give Armando a chance changing for the last 10 minutes to 2 front men. Who did he take off then? our only striker Diego Cervero and he pushed up central defender Diego Meijide into attack. All the change brought was confusion and the team seemed as bewildered as all the fans.
1-1 final score and things are desperate.

To paraphrase the pages and pages of blurb from Carrasco after the match, he basically said that the team would always have a bad spell at some point in the season, they just have to turn results around. The same players that excelled (?) a month ago are going through a rough patch but it takes just one result and they’ll be back to their best (???).

I’d say that everyone knew Cervero would go through a bad spell at some point so you’d set up the team not to rely solely on one outlet, and when he isn’t scoring don’t drop his strike partner and put him under more pressure to score.

Hopefully the signing of Pacheta is the answer to all fans prayers and he slots into whatever system Carrascos decides to play straight away.(he has to!)

Meijide got his fifth yellow today so that’s a suspension for our next match – away to Sporting “B”, hopefully Bravo is now fit for that key game.

    My translation from : http://www.oviedin.com/
Oviedo does not know how to play. It does not have a game pattern and when changes come from the bench they muddy the waters even more. There is tactical confusion, 4-4-2 was played for a couple of months to reasonable success but now at home we are playing with only one forward. 2nd half and we need to score, bringing on Armando a good thing but replacing Cervero and pushing Meijide forward – bizarre. We have a media-savvy trainer who is completely devoted to wordy post match press conferences, over explaining his conduct and always having prepared lists of excuses, but he seems unable to communicate with his team. People are tired, today the fans demonstrated they showed their malaise unhappy with a manager incapable of taking this team forward. In the last weeks and months the team instead of improving, gets worse, with a goalkeeper increasingly error prone and Insecure, the defense are individuals without any bond or cohesion, the midfield and attack seems channelled solely on getting the ball to lone striker Cervero, all our hopes of scoring rest with one man. Carrasco insists on playing Diego Cervero alone upfront after trying with some success a partnership with Armando he has now regressed to the formation at the start of the season. The club rather than winning this league in style is crawling into the play-offs.

Absolutely bizarre set of results, 7 out of 10 matches were draws.
Obviously a home draw wasn't too damaging on face value then, but we hardly go into battle with Sporting "B" with any great confidence.
Only bad result for Oviedo Lealtad winning again but then only 3-2 away at no-hopers Lealtad
Caudal lost at home to lose ground on 4th place.

Next match: (away) Sporting Gijon “B” – Sunday 3rd February

    Sporting de Gijón B

    History:
    19 seasons Segunda “B” (Champions x 2)
    17 seasons Tercera (Champions x 3, Runners-Up x 2)

    Last 5 years Tercera – 4th, 7th , 5th, 3rd and 3rd, after 13 straight seasons in Segunda “B”.

    Current form:
    10th place Games22 Points32 Wins9 Draws5 Lost8 Goals for37 against29

    Home form:
    14th 10 14 4 2 4 17 14

They are currently suffering very poor form with 1 win in 7, a home win against 18th placed Real Tapia.

    Goalscorers:
    8 Carlos Alvarez
    6 Carlos
    6 Nacho Cases

    -------------

Obviously Sporting “B” are the second team of Oviedos’ great rivals Sporting Gijon. Oviedo beat Sporting “B” 3-2 at home with 2 late late goals in a game that could easily have been lost.
Oviedo beat the full Gijon side in the Copa Principado earlier this season so it would be nice to make it a treble of wins.

Anything other than a win would just add to Carrascos woes and unpopularity among supporters. To win back some good will a performance and hopefully a heavy win is needed indeed expected, they are very poor at the moment.

A win would all but end Gijons' hopes of a Play-Off place, any other result could see Lealtad go top (home to 3rd placed Tuilla). Off form Cudillero (4th) travel to in form Aviles (8th). Universidad (5th) are away to Ribadesella (11th) another tough match while Caudal (6th) should win away to Navarro (14th).

    -------------

New signing Pacheta should feature after training at the end of the week with the squad.
Todays signing Mario Prieto (yes he did eventually sign) will not feature in the game.

The probabilty is of the two 17 goal men leading the attack - Pacheta and Diego Cervero. Hopefully they hit it off straight away as there will again be a makeshift defence and a makeshift midfield.

Team news not good on the injury front. Carmona, Bravo, Juan Luis, Centrón, Jon Carrera, Curro, Matías and Stefan are all likely to miss match. Again Bravo has missed training throughout week and again is rated at 50-50 to play. almost a whole squad of first team players out injured. Diego Meijide is suspended after reaching 5 yellow cards - so that is pretty much a team of first team players out of contention!

Dani Garcia has gone on loan to Gallician club Betanzos for the rest of the season.

    Possible team: 4-4-2 please
Goalkeeper - Ivan ( Carrasco has dropped Aulestia once before, is it time to give the youngster another go?)
Fullbacks - Lasarte on left Jose Luis on right
Centre backs - Lucas Iglesias and Bravo (or Adrian)
Central midfield - Falo (not in defence please!) and Jaime
Wings - Sergio Villanueva and either Bruno or Santos
Strikers - Pacheta and Diego Cervero.

Match Day Squad: (away) Sporting "B"

    Goalkeepers:
    Aulestia
    Iván

    Defenders:
    José Luis
    Lucas Iglesias
    Bravo
    Iker Lasarte

    Midfielders:
    Falo
    Mario Prieto
    Roberto Santos
    Curro
    Sergio Villanueva
    Jaime

    Forwards:
    Bruno
    Armando Quesada
    Pacheta
    Diego Cervero

So all 3 new signings are in the match squad. Due to injuries and suspension it is last man standing. Bravo has to be fit otherwise where is the logic in not atleast having a reserve defender (from B/youth team) on the bench. Defence obviously picks itself then 4 into 4. Midfielder Curro 50-50 at best so Mario Prieto comes in not having trained with his new teammates. The most eagerly waited debut is Pacheta and to see if his partnership with Cervero clicks immediately.

Oviedin.com reports that Carrasco feels that both Curro and Bravo are fit to start the game but that Bravo is likely to be on bench with Falo in defence. Curro will partner Marion Prieto in the middle with Jaime on the left wing. But then who can predict what Carrasco can do!

    Match 23: Sunday 3rd February 2008

Sporting Gijon “B” 0-2 Real Oviedo

    Real Oviedo
    4-4-2

    GK Aulestia

    RB José Luis
    CB Bravo
    CB Lucas Iglesias
    LB Lasarte

    RM Bruno
    (Santos 79m)
    CM Falo
    CM Curro
    LM Sergio Villanueva
    (Jaime 86m)

    CF Diego Cervero
    CF Pacheta
    (Mario Prieto 68m)

    Goals:
    13m Cervero (penalty)
    40m Bruno

Great first half followed by a battling second, with the usual dodgy ref who seemed intent on turning a blind eye to Sportings' constant fouling. how they only got 3 yellows is unbelievable, the calculated assault on Villanueva that ended with him being stretchered off went unpunished.

Pressure added before kick-off with news 2nd placed Lealtad had beaten 3rd placed Tuilla 3-0 to move to the top of the table a point ahead of Oviedo.

Carrasco actually went with a team selection that most supporters would agree with, with most players playing in their specialist positions. Falo in his favoured midfield spot ran the show with Pacheta and Cervero showing enough to suggest that they could well anihilate opposition defences. The only question mark would probably be why move you in form player of last month (Sergio Villanueva) from his favoured right wing to the left where he is less effective. Villanueva played well enough but how much better would he be on right. There were times he got to byline but rather than cross he had to cut inside to use his favoured right foot. A left footed winger would have had some joy today on that flank. Curro didn't look fit but did OK, Bravo looked very good, a calm wise head who knew when to play the ball out of defence and when to hoof it to row Z of the stand. Aulestia did very well i thought, at times he was under intense pressure and he stood up and played authoritatively.

Good all round performance but we have to be very very wary of Lealtad who don't look like ever losing!
